Paris - Roubaix 2016 (114th edition)

Nice to see a workhorse like Hayman get the win (only his 2nd ever pro win) on his 15th(!) P-R ride. He seems to be a well liked character too.

Great way to likely bow out for Boonen with a valiant 2nd, I can't feel sorry for him after all the success he's enjoyed over the years.

Stannard and Vanmarke were immense and will be back for years to come.

Best ride I can remember for EBH in a monument by some way (?). Given his problem with the longer distances (allegedly related to on bike digestion issues) I didn't expect him to hang on as long he did.

Can't believe how close Boonen was to write history today.

Conclusions of this P-R:

1. Aero helmets work
2. The greatest cobbles classic rider of this generation has been confirmed and answers by the name IMANOL ERVITI!
3. Cobblestones are like kryptonite to Sky
4. Spartacus and Tommeke should schedule a dinner to console one another
5. No rain >>> Rain

If Vanmarcke cant get the win from a group like that with no Sagan, Cancellara, Van Avermaet or Stybar i doubt he will ever win Roubaix...

+1 Sad
All favorites out of games because of crashes, also loses he still.

I liked how Cancellara destroyed everybody today. Literally.

Oh my, the fact that Hayman destroyed with his win so many PCMDaily bets.
But never believed that the old man (Boonen) is still so strong, hats off for this amazing performance. I guess this was the last exciting P-R for a while. Because in the next years we will see the dominance of IMANOL ERVITI!

this was fantastic. best race ive ever seen

funny, the first thing i heard when the stream loaded was quigley (was that quigley with kelly?) saying hayman at 800 to 1 was stupid odds and take a punt if you still can
there was 200kms to go

Yup, I can't believe anyone has been stupid enough to think Hayman would ever win P-R or EBH finishing top-5 in the same race!

He can take the rest of the season off now! It would have more logical if the races were raced in headwind and they weren't really racing, but Flanders and P-R was full gas, hugely impressive and surprising results.

I have to admit I was rooting for Boonen in the finale there. He just got too boxed in and didn't have the acceleration to get around that fast. That being said, he went to the front a few too many times I think. Hayman was crazy good today but he also barely took a pull. And while I don't like wheelsucking, there were times when the pace could be slowed later in the race where nobody would catch them anyway, but Boonen was too willing to pull hard anyway.

And you cant blame Hayman for that. Being 4 times winner and a favorite it was Bonnen's responsibility to chase down attacks. Not Hayman. Especially when there are guys like Stannard, Vanmarke involved. Also it was not Hayman's responsibility to pull and get gap to Sagan/Cancellara group either.
Hayman did what was right and got a deserving win for that.

Since when was Boonen a favorite? Most people had counted him out even after the classics season began, and especially before today. Daily had him at 22:1 odds. Mind you, that's farther off odds than Vanmarcke, Stannard, and EBH according to Daily. How was he the favorite?

As for someone else's suggestion of Hayman pulling as much as him, maybe we were watching two different races. I didn't see him pull more than more than ten times total in that final break the last few dozen km. On the other hand, Boonen was taking pulls even when there were 4 Sky riders int he group, which I think is too much.

Hayman did plenty of work and he did get dropped and came back to that group so was clearly on the limit so not surprising he didn't work as hard as Boonen, I would like to see this wheelsucking you mentioned higher up thread, can't remember seeing anyone in that group of 5 doing any wheelsucking whatsoever but if you could point out where it happened I'm happy to stand corrected. Boonen didn't lose because he got boxed in, he lost because he was cooked just like the others and it was a slow drag race so the guy in front hung on and won

He is clearly in form and fighting fit so putting himself up the road and paying attention to the moves payed off for him, great effort from the guy and really happy to see a domestique get some time in the sun in such unexpected races. Doubt he can come back next year and reproduce these results but nobody can take away this year from him. Chapau Erviti!

Really expecting Vanmarcke to win but sometimes things just don't go your way. Sad that Cancellara's leaving but that makes next year's Paris-Roubaix wide open. Sagan, Boonen, Degenkolb, Kristoff, Vanmarcke, Stannard, ERVITI, Benoot, etc. The next few years is going to be fun

Forever the Best
An awesome race. And perfectly raced by Etixx. And Boonen almost won.Frown
It would have been awesome if Tommeke had won.But he raced as a champ, chapeau.
Ardennes will be boring as usual.Meh
Also hoping that Cancellara will ride one more year.
