Can I just use big tour stages (copy them) instead of those huge bundles of stages for every race, in order to have a rotation each year in big tour races?
I don't want to use all those 10+ GB stage packs, just the major races' new stages... |

Well, you'll have to download something first and you won't find (many) variants available by themselves. There are two packs in in the download area to choose from:
https://pcmdaily.c...p?catid=96
The smaller download has variants for the major races, though the ASO pack has even more variants.
After downloading you can pick and choose what to actually install in the game, which means copying the variants you like in one of the two folders you can use. However, single stages won't help unless you manually change things around with an external editor. |

Thanks for the response!
The different variants that appear in some DB extensions are already "coded" in to appear, right? |

Yep, every variant that you put in cm_stages will appear sooner or later. If you want to force a certain variant to appear during the year you are playing, edit in sta_race and sta_stage the column gene_sz_current_variant to the name of the variant

Maybe my answer came across as slightly rude, which wasn't intentional. A single stage can be 10 MByte in size, so a pack with several variants for several races has to be a big download. But it's definitely worth it!
I started with the smaller pack, which is already pretty good, but the large ASO pack is even better. Just yesterday I played a variant of Milan - San Remo I hadn't seen before (asodb2) which was exceptionally beautiful.
As Matt said, you just put the variants in the correct folder and the game in career mode will randomly choose one for each race of a season on the 1st of January, no further work required (except for the first season, which will be the 2014 variants). |

Nothing rude or whatever that I fould in your post mate!
My only concern is that I run the game from my SSD, which has a limited capacity and I would like to avoid topping it up with a ton of PCM stages. I wondered if I could have the stages in a separate HDD and copy-paste the stages I want to run each year in the installation folder.
It seems I can so I will give it a go.
Only thing I messed up now is whether I will need to manually change something in order for the game to run a different variation, for which by your answer I conclude I don't have to... |

1. You absolutely can do it!
2. If you only put the variant you want to use year by year, no you don't have to!

Is there a risk to doing this mid-career? I'm willing to try this in my career as there is only one Vuelta variant I've been playing so far!

No risk at all, the new variants will rotate starting from January 2nd of the next year in career

You can add the variants at any point in your career if that's what you mean.

Which reminds me that I now have so many variants that I still haven't seen Samu12's great and very tough Vuelta variant in my career.

I also recommend tsmoha's Tour of America, if you rename all the stages you can turn it into a GT variant that will show up in your career. Sure, it's a bit odd to race a TdF (or Giro or Vuelta) in the USA, but the beautiful stages are worth it:

Those two aren't in the ASO pack and need to be downloaded separately. |

Could you tell me which db to edit in the fast editor if I want to change a particular race to a specific variant?

Open your savegame (C:\Users\You\Documents\Pro Cycling Manager 2014\Users\You\Database\Solo\DBName) with PCM Fast Editor and edit what I told you in STA_Race and STA_Stage

Thanks Matt
Do I need to change the fklDclimat column? this has entries like 'SoutEurope', 'Mediterranean and others', and so on...
