Finally got a smartphone so I will be able to strava my rides, they will most likely be awful numbers since I am using a city bike which isn't light or anything, but it will be interesting to see how I do compared to other members, it will also help me find out if I want to invest in a more expensive bike. |

I started using Strava with a mobile phone when I was still riding a hybrid bike a couple of years ago. I was already using it to find climbs near me but found joining in a real motivation. At that time I was in no danger of troubling the top places on any leaderboard but that didn't matter at all.
Since then I've gradually ridden further and faster and indeed gradually upgraded to an entry level road bike, Garmin 500 and a heart rate monitor.
These days I even trouble the odd leaderboard but more importantly have fallen in love with riding, exploring and the freedom of the bike. Strava had a fair bit to do with that journey so I can only recommend giving it a go and also joining the PCM Daily club there too |

You certainly put in some big and varied rides @ianrussell and it's been great watching it on Strava.
@jihardy. Use Ian as an example of what a fun little tool Strava is and trust me you will get the need to upgrade bikes before to long. I'm easy enough to find on Strava so feel free to follow me and I'll do the same buddy

Wow, it's a great feeling being back on the bike. Have got 3 weeks home now, and I've never had as much motivation as these weeks. Ended up with 22 hrs last week and aiming for 25-26 this. Just a great feeling after so many weeks trapped inside, even with 5-6 degrees in Oslo these days. |

Got a silver medal in the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in U19 Men 20 km points race, last week. I took a lap on the peloton with an Australian rider, but he beated me in the last sprint.... The Omnium and Scratch Race was pretty shit, even though I also took a lap with three others in the first round of the Omnium and was fourth after the first round!

On that note just compiled a list of work that needs to be done on my current bike. Once I'd got as far as new mech, shifter, wheelset, cables, bar tape, chain/cassette and bottom bracket I'd got the total spend to about half of a new bike. That totally justifies a wholesale upgrade to a new machine in my book!
Current plan is to ride on until spring with some spit and wire, with the winter taking its toll on my current ride, then to hope for the money to go shopping in March. A Cube with a 105 groupset is still the preferred choice but lots of time to dream over the perfect upgrade |

Crashed today in a crit and broke my collarbone, might have also done something my AC joint. So my arm is in a sling now and that'll likely be my last ride in Australia given I'm leaving...
At least the hospital was fast, went to a children's one rather than a normal one and it was so much faster.

Ouch. Done my collarbone in a non-cycling related incident, always hurts. Best of luck with your recovery mate

Ah man that sucks! Collarbones aren't a big deal as its a cyclists right of passage (trust me I know) but be careful with the AC joint as that's something that can be an ongoing niggle. Rest up and heal up matey.
So my weekend sucked! Had a "surprise" Everest attempt start midnight Friday that I was sailing through which was ruined by a very nasty (one of the worst I've had) migraine, was going to try and push through but my vision was blurred and pain all down my spine. Anyway here is the failed attempt https://www.strava.com/activities/414.../414239920 was looking like a sub 200 which is would of been cool

So did 40km of cycling last week, (doesn't sound like much but I'm proud) I really enjoyed it and it looks like I will join a cycling club next season, I currently play basketball so I don't have much time to ride but I will next year, really excited |

Just had a fantastically idiotic argument about Helmets. I'm of the view that all cyclists should wear helmets pretty much all the time, the other person was convinced helmets make no difference.
Opening argument of them: "There's no scientific study that shows helmets are actually safer. I get pros wear them but they are travelling much faster than an everyday cyclist"
Opening arguement of me: "You stand there without a helmet. I'll stand here with a helmet. Then Jeff can hit us both over the head with a 2x4 plank. According to your logic we'll both be equally damaged and in pain. Let's test that theory."
Them: "Well.... f*ck"
People like my friend drive me up the flamming wall. They just don't understand how much force you can transfer even in slow speed fall, or they don't understand actually how fast they go on a bike. Morons, anyone who thinks helmets don't make a difference are morons.

From what I can remember reading (but don't quote me) they are probably even more use at lower speeds - e.g. if you go head on into a car flying down a descent at 75km/h it can only make so much difference but if you have a silly low speed fall and hit your head hard on the road surface it could be all the difference.
Bottom line is it might save your life if you wear one it can't if you don't...
That said I'm astounded at how many people wear them completely incorrectly - tipped back with all the forehead showing is the most common mistake = any frontal impact and the helmet is useless. Another is well meaning parents forcing their kids to wear them but not fitting them correctly so the kid can't see properly or the helmet moves all over the place = far more likely to have an accident and more dangerous than no helmet at all people!
Other than that each to their own, it's evolution at work... |

More on the increased importance of helmets for low speed, silly crashes that we all have from time to time:
"In cases of high impact, such as most crashes that involve a motor vehicle, the initial forces absorbed by a cycle helmet before breaking are only a small part of the total force and the protection provided by a helmet is likely to be minimal in this context. In cases where serious injury is likely, the impact energy potentials are commonly of a level that would overwhelm even Grand Prix motor racing helmets. Cycle helmets provide best protection in situations involving simple, low-speed falls with no other party involved." |

Last week the minister responsible for mobility announced he is looking into maybe making wearing helmets obligatory. I'm an opponent of doing so cause wearing a helmet or not should always be your own choice. You do not endanger anyone else so there is no reason to make it obligatory to me.
If such a rule would ever pass I'd probably stop using my bike. Just because it would be such a logistic hassle carrying the helmet around all day. No way i'd bother with that.

Well we've had mandatory helmet laws in Australia since 1989 so I've worn a helmet my entire cycling life, it's really only a hassle carrying a helmet around all day if that's what you want it to be, they are light, already have straps so can be strapped to a backpack or even left with your bike if you use a bike lock just thread it through. Saying you don't endanger anybody else's life other than your own by not wearing one really isn't true, you have family and friends who I'm sure would rather have you alive than dead or have you with a brain injury, so yes others aren't physically endangered but looking at the bigger picture they most certainly will suffer. To me helmets are like seatbelts in cars, they might not save your life in every single situation but for the most part they will protect you, I have had my fair share of falls and scrapes with cars and after one time when a car ran into me putting me into a parked car, I was bruised and cut but when I looked at my helmet there was a big crack in it so I can only imagine what that impact would of done to my head had it not been there.

Comparing Helmets to Seatbelts in cars is pretty good. It's not going to save you in a "worst case scenario" but it is going to help in normal everyday incidents. Like with helmest the number of people i see inccorectly wearing seatbelts is ridiculous, but's for a different section.
I also don't see how having to always wear a helmet is a problem. If you cycle commute just take it to your desk or locker or you could easily strap it to your bag. If you're on a social/training ride just thread your bike lock through it. I find carrying a helmet around no more of an inconvenience than carting my bike locks around, all you've got to do is figure out how to do it in a way that suits. Anything else is pure lazieness!
