So happy to see Sagan win. He was done in that last km, but managed to find some reserves.
Also how about Navardauskas getting 3rd
I would also like to mention Valverde, that guy is just "WOW!
Feel like the Danish national team failed today, they didn't sit in the position needed, when the final climbs was coming up.
Overall, a great WC, and will for sure be better than next years "sprinter shit" in Qatar. I Hope for a challenging course for the hilly specialist/MO riders in 2017 |

Dutch and Belgians attacking like madmen to make the race hard.
Sprinter teams destroyed because of that.
Sagan dropping Van Avermaet on a Van Avermaet climb. Sagan soloing to the finish. Sagan!!! FINALLY!
Anti-cycling team Australia with anti-cycling hero Matthews (gerrans the 2nd) not winning!
Perfect. And I love Sagan winning.
Dumoulin said after the race he attacked in the final kilometer and was caught with 50m to go. That would've made it even better and at least more deserved than Matthews. But oh well, can't have everything. It was a great race overall. A great race by the Dutch, unfortunately no reward but better to give it all and lose then to ride like Australia and finish 2nd.
How did Dumoulin deserve to finish 2nd in front of Matthews?
Matthews is a sprinter and did exactly what he was meant to do and did it perfectly by being the first sprinter home. Also he is not the same type of rider as Gerrans and I really don't get how anyone would think that. I'm not nationalistic in anyway and judge riders and people by what they do not the country they are from but I really don't understand all the dislike of almost everything Australian cycling, Gerrans isn't exciting but races to his strengths and has a palmares that many riders would dream about, Matthews is building himself up a tidy little record and races exactly how most other sprinters do.
It really does seem that unless you attack like an idiot in every race then you're victories are worthless, I think people really need to grow up a little and appreciate the many different styles in the peloton even if they aren't the prettiest you can still respect it
There's quite a negative stigma attached to Australian riders on this site and there always has been, since way back when I joined. I still don't understand it.

It's very easy. Negative racing.
Even with their focus on Matthews and Gerrans sprinting 200m and being invisible the rest of the race, even then their team barely rode. It was mostly Germany.
And other sprints like Degenkolb or Kristoff even ride attractive when they have good legs (like Kristoff attacking in RVV with terpstra).
Matthews and Gerrans are boring wheelsucking 200m riders and Australia ride very negative and controlling. So it's automatically not inspiring if they win. It's not that hard to understand.
Go Sagan! Go attackers |

There's quite a negative stigma attached to Australian riders on this site and there always has been, since way back when I joined. I still don't understand it.
Because there has always been an anti-English speaking sentiment in cycling from the late 1980's onwards, where English speaking riders started to challenge the European hegemony which was dominated by French, Spanish and Dutch speakers in the peloton and also their traditional way of doing things.
Greg Lemond and the Americans globalized and changed the sport, Lance Armstrong continued it, Sky took it to another level and the Australians are like the new kids on the block in terms of rider and team success which started with the generation of Cadel Evans and Robbie McEwen and now Orica.
Also the English speaking riders have a tradition of track racing and TT which doesn't always make them the most exciting to watch and the Australians fall exactly into this category.
Gerrans is a terrible wheel sucker which is terrible for the sport, but it gets him results and he's tactically excellent, it's therefore really upto the other riders to make him work rather than him changing. |

Great win for Sagan. He deserves it. He has class, personality, talent and has a likeable riding style. Hopefully he'll perform better then what Kwiatek, which in my opinion has been awfull and have been the most boring wearer off the rainbow yersey that i can remember. All in all a great WC even though Norway has underperformed. If there is one negative, that would be the production. Bad timing and awful camerawork, especially in the mens TT and mens RR. |

Sagan deserved a win there, I wasn't supporting him as such, but he did deserve it after all those second places and he did get his tactics right.
Was supporting Farrar when he attacked for fun.
Mathews in 2nd and Gerrans also in the top ten
Seriously, though, I have to make a bit of a rant about all this Aussie hate :
If you bring one of the best sprinters of those who can survive the course to a race, then you really aren't obliged to attack, and seriously, there were all these other riders who didn't attack as well, I'm pretty sure Navardauskas didn't attack (don't hate me if I missed him attacking but I'm 95% sure he didn't) but the Aussies are targeted for racing the strategy that is best for them, if it had come down to a sprint and another rider who didn't attack beat Mathews, would people still be happy that Mathews lost? I love an attacking race, but usually you need sprinters (or Time trialists in Stage races) to be the ones who get attacked, just saying. I just feel that you can't randomly hate, if somebody actually had legitimate reasoning (I understand you might not like a rider, but not with some of the reactions to their loss).
Ok, rant over
Also Gallopin in the top ten.

So I had the pleasure of being at the race today (and providing early coverage on the MG skype group before my phone died) but was properly positioned on 23rd street where I was guessing the winning move would happen.
15 laps went by, lot of excitement, huge cheers for Ben King in each of the laps he was with the 8 man breakaway, and then a massive roar on the single lap where Taylor Phinney was in the 4 man break. I'm sure Farrar would have got the same cheering, though he didn't make it to 23rd street in his attack.
the 16th lap though finally we got the move we were looking to see, GVA made a huge dig, and watching Sagan go over the top of him you could see at that point it might be over. Made for one exciting race, and I had a great time (though my feet are very very sore as I was sitting/standing on the side of a very steep hill overlooking 23rd street).
Edit: Boonen is terrifying when he stares down other riders watching to see if they are going to attack.

I understand why people might not like watching Gerrans (2 monuments so doubt he gives a toss) but how is Matthews doing anything wrong in your eyes? You are comparing him to Kirstoff and Dagenkolb and because he's not doing what they are he's a "wheelsucker" but ignoring that they aren't the same type of rider, both of them are stronger than Matthews, especially when it comes down to one day classic type of racing, they both are great on the cobbles and real hardman sprinters but Matthews is a uphill/punchy type of sprinter, the only objectionable thing about him is his stupid nickname. The only sprinter who regularly works on the front is Griepel, Matthews is just racing to a style that most other sprinters do.

I don't understand why anybody cares about somebody's nationality, is the opinion formed from watching Evans and Gerrans not being the most exciting riders so that's how Australian riders are being type cast?

That was the first time I saw Sagan so over the limit, but he did keep it until the line. I'm happy he's our world Champion now A deserving and likable champion.

There seems to be this crazy nationalistic stance with cycling, not just on this forum but all over.
There have been so many discussion where its fuck this guy because he is from x nation and I dont like x nation.
Its stupid and really limits the conversations we can have on here. |

Can't really say he is the most likeable rider in the sport, he's getting better in his behaviour as he gets older but still has a ways to go to make up for the podium girl incidents. I can't deny his racing is brilliant and is very marketable with everything else he does, maybe now as World Champ he could help the sport and call for the end of podium girls

That's twice I've gone all in on Stybs and failed. E3 (potential profit of 990) and WC (potential profit of 3360)
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

I went all out 10 on Valverde (for a potential profit of 200) and now I'm broke as well. I'm not great at betting. (I always go for an outsider - bad idea...)
I'm still bitter because I meant to bet lots on 'another rider' winning Vuelta KOM and accidental hit Valverde or Landa I can't remember.
