Martin will probably make a long range attack I guess like he did in 2013 or 2014 (can't remember which), I'm predicting he'll make it this year.
Long range attack? In the ITT as well?
He'll attack straight from the start.

Tony won't win the ITT. ITT course wins Tony. |

My thoughts on the Belgian squad. I'm Belgian but not nationalistic at all. I'm not one of those that wants his countrymen to won over anything else. Far from actually but on this course they are the team that can make this a great race by creating complete carnage during the final 100 kms (like the Squadra used to do in Bettini's day).
Unfortunately the national coach Carlo Bomans has come up with a very dissapointing selection. I don't think very highly of him, opposite actually. It's now his 10th year in charge. In those 10 years Belgium somehow has ended up with only 1 medal. Granted it was Gold in 2012 (but looking back on it that race would have need to go very bad for Gilbert not to win considering he was also fastest over the Cauberg in 2010,2011,2013,2014 and 2015). 1 medal in 10 years is a really pathetic palmares considering the Belgian squad had Tom Boonen and Philippe Gilbert for all those years, clearly 2 of the 4 best classic riders of their generation. Only other time they played a role in the finale was Gilbert's attack in Geelong. It really amazes me that he still has a job considering the results.
Now to the selection which was really dissapointing. The plan apparently is to win with Tom Boonen in a sprint. I have tons of respect for Tom but I don't see how he is going to beat and Sagan, Kristoff, Degenkolb and the other sprinters.
Maybe he stands a chance if they create complete carnage all day and he really could have taken a team to do so but opted to take riders like Maes and Keisse instead. No offence to those two but there are 15 better classic riders in Belgium (Roelants, Debusschere, Bakelants, Meersman, Theuns, Devolder, Wallays hell even Bille and Claeys). Guys that would have been of so much more use because one thing about Maes and Keisse is that have never shown they have the endurance to handle long classics (which the WC is after all). I'm especially gutted for Jurgen Roelants, a rider I have tons of respect for and think very highly off. He skipped the Tour this year to fully focus on the end of season classics and WC but is somehow not selected for the 3rd year in a row. No idea what Bomans has against Roelants but the guy even got good results for the team when the leaders failed (5th in Copenhague, 7th in London) but hasn't even been selected since. Even in the plan to go for a mass sprint with Boonen it would have maken so much more sense to select him than Maes or Keisse cause he has actually done many good leadouts in his career.
Bomans and the riders he choose can prove me wrong but it wouldn't surprise me if he's out of a job next month and I would fully understand that decision.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. Maes and Keisse are there to protect the leaders and carry bottles. Nothing more, nothing less. Sure there are better riders out there, but if Boonen/Gilbert/GVA want to work with those guys (and I'm pretty sure they've said who they wanted months ago), let them. They're both professionals and they know what is expected of them and they will be ready for it. You won't see them in the final, but rest assured they've done their job in the first 200km, as they have done before. That's why you bring them. You can't build your selection with the 9 best riders, cause that won't work.
Roelandts is a good rider and has some results, but who cares about 5th or 7th in a WC? You want to win or get on the podium. Boonen, Gilbert, GVA, Vanmarcke and for me even Benoot have a bigger chance of winning.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

This is just crazy, he must have compromising pictures of someone to have kept his job. With the riders Belgium has and the courses we have had in the last 10 years, 1 medal is just absurd. |

Despite not being Belgian, Belgium is my favourite cycling nation for both riders and races. I agree 1 medal in ten years is pretty poor considering that Belgium normally have one of the very strongest WC squada especially when for the RR anyway.
If the plan is to carry Boonen to the line that's quite a poor one because as you say he's not going to beat Sagan, Kristoff or Degenkolb. |

Also I don't belive I have seen any discussion here about the Nations Cup for best overall nation that the UCI will introduce in Richmond. Without knowing any details I think it looks interesting and could be a good motivating factor to get more nations to support riders outside the mens elite RR as success with women and/or young riders could earn them a good place in the nations ranking and thus more prestige than a potential top 10 in the mens elite road race.

Well, I think the main problem with that is that people will only learn about it in the final race.

Sounded like it's just going to be a medal table, or some sort of variaton on that. Does anybody really care about something like that? It's not like the Olympics, or sports like Athletics and Swimming, where there are a lot of Elite level events at a World Championships.

Don't know, but I choose to be optimistic about it becoming more official with a trophy and all. At least in Denmark we have seen several years that the cycling federations won't support the women properly around the world championships even though they usually should have a better chance of success than the men. A couple of big talents have ended their careers early because of lacking support as well.
If it can help pull things in the right direction it's a great idea. If not it still doesn't hurt anything.

I read the UCI rules regarding world championships and it outlines the team rankings as a points system and not a medal table.

Ouch. Team Sky TTT training ride crash. Viviani, Pate and Rowe hit the Tarmac at 60kph.

Quite a few teams seem to have been going down in recon rides. Could be a key factor of the race, staying on the bike
