Fränk Schleck won, now all we need is an old leopard jersey. Purito in Red, this is one of the best things I've watched Amazing. I love Schleck's riding style as well. Great stage though.
So Chavenal need a a win, Rodriguez the race and I'm very happy.

The riders can go screw at this point. The only one who deserves to win is Dumoulin honestly.
Though I do in my heart want Purito to win but if him not attacking further out today costs him the title I wont feel bad.
No matter the stage design if the Peloton doesnt want to try you dont have a bike race.
Dumoulin knows he is the best by a pretty significant amount in the TT so he just has to follow and keep everything close. The rest of these guys should be ashamed of themselves for how they have raced.
There is NO difference between 5th and 20th place. So not trying because you want to conserve that 5th place is just laughable.
This is the reason Alberto is amazing, he makes races and stages exciting no matter if he wins or loses. Part of being a great athlete is being exciting to not just your fans but everyone.
Even Purito at his best (and he is nowhere near his best anymore) didn't attack from a long way out, he's never been a true long range climber but always a punchy climber, if he would of attacked from a long way out today then he would be lucky to still be in the top 3 because he would of faltered. Also the race doesn't end after the TT, even if Dumoulin pulls out a massive TT which is 50/50 he still won't be anymore than a minute in front with 2/3 stages where the other riders and teams have a shot of gaining time.
Also to say there is no difference between 5th and 20th place is rubbish, maybe not to you and fans but it might mean something to the rider and team, I get tired of fans demanding riders do this and that, it's the riders career not ours, I'd be pretty happy to get to the end of my career and say I'd finished 5th in a GT
I am talking at 2km instead of 1km. Not some crazy 20km attack.
What stage after the TT allows for any real time gain without a rider having a mechanical or totally cracking? Answer none.
The riders have a career because of the fans.
Purito said in an interview after the stage that he was cracking and thought he might get dropped on the previous climb, how would of attacking earlier helped? He obviously didn't have the legs which did show in the attack he did make, he got a small gap and just barely maintained it. Aru clearly wasn't on a good day which also showed on the previous climb and the fact he was getting put to the sword by his "teammate" in Landa gave him no chance to make a real impact. Majka did well enough but is much better on long climbs which this Vuelta has been lacking, one long MTF after the TT would make this a completely different race and Dumoulin would most likely crack in this scenario, poor route design isn't helping this race but also having most of the peloton exhausted plays its part.
Also to you're last point. I don't agree it's all about the fans and I'm not a subscriber to the theory that winning is everything

Why not for LottoNL? A Dutch GT winner will only be good for them as a Dutch team, so yeah as they've got f*ck all to race for themselves why not pitch in and help out. It's not like the Spaniards and Spanish teams have ever teamed up at the Vuelta before to make sure someone wins/doesn't win.
Anything to stop the monster that is Astana is only good. Anything to stop the retard that is Tinkov is only good. It's Purito i feel a tad sorry for if it goes down like that but tbf he should have won GT's by now

Since crashing is LottoNL's specialty, they're gonna make the other contenders crash.
All serious now, alliances are still part of modern cycling. Remember the Belkin/Quick Step coup at the TdF two years ago?
And did anyone bat an eye when Serpa helped Quintana during the Tour? |

Nope, only the Aussies got punished, and only when they get a puncture on a flat stage.

why..in Vuelta spaniards has always worked as all against other nationality's. Like 1999 ..all spaniards against Ulle. It was miracle that he survived that.
It is normal. Dutch rider has possibility to get into GT podium..all out for that. Normal. |

A nice gesture, at the very least.
I think it even plays to Dumoulin's advantage that he's not riding for a fellow Dutch team. They wouldn't help if he was, I believe.
Etixx would never help a Lotto rider this way, I think. But a Belgian riding for - I don't know - MTN, that's another thing. |

I agree that alliances are good on the road when you have a common goal.
But there is literally no reason within the bike race for LottoNL to ally with Giant. They flat out said they're helping him simply for him. It helps their team in no way within the actual racing to support him, except that they can get a Dutch GT winner who isn't even on their team or have any relation them.
I get there are other reasons, but this is different than a mock alliance made in crosswinds to get rid of a common GC foe. This is a mockery of sportsmanship and competition in cycling.

Out of interest, does anyone have a link to where LottoNL say this?

On the other hand, what can they really do for him?
Can't drag him up a mountain.
Can't help him in the time trial.
Oh wait. They can crash whoever they like. That's their not-so-secret weapon. |

Calm down, Lotto NL are an absolute disastrous team, even if they want to help, they arent capable of it anyways. No chance any NL-rider will be within the first 40 on a mountain anyway, they are just that bad |

But Lindeman was first on a mountain.

I actually like this. They've already got a stage win, and a Dutch GT win could bring the sport more public interest in their country. And who knows, one day he or Giant might repay them.
Really looking forward to tomorrow's TT anyway. Wanted Purito to win before the race, but now supporting Tom D. Hopefully he's on top form and can claw back 3 minutes on Aru and Purito. |
