There's been a few big races since the last update.
First off were the Ardennes Classics. Simone Ponzi stole all the headlines by managing to win all 3 races, but Simon Spilak was also very consistent taking 2nd each time. Sadly for Swisscom, Simon Zahner was unable to finish higher than 120th. Good Energy and Festina therefore led the scoring from those 3 classics, with Tinkoff, Bouygues and Becherovka being the next best. The surprise of Sagan crucially allowing them to outscore Vesuvio by a small margin.
Ardennes
| 1 | | Good Energy | 860 | | 2 | | Festina-Canal+ | 753 | | 3 | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 492 | | 4 | | Bouygues Telecom | 405 | | 5 | | Becherovka - Petrof | 379 |
It was straight on to the Vuelta from there and a commanding performance by Aleksandr Pluchkin to secure his maiden Grand Tour win. It earned him 1092 points, while in total Metinvest scored 1218. Tenorio, Gesink and Dekker led their teams to some strong points performance while Tinkoff enjopyed great breakaway success with stage wins, the KoM jersey and the Teams classification. Cunego was the 4th highest scorer in the race, with Swift the best scorer in 5th - Phinney placed 7th despite failing to finish.
Vuelta
| 1 | | Metinvest-Dacia | 1218 | | 2 | | Bacardi Limited | 930 | | 3 | | Project 1t4i | 812 | | 4 | | Orange - KLM | 665 | | 5 | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 655 |
Aside from the Strada Appia Antica, the other points added to the rankings came from the recent HC races - and most notably the 140 points Pendleton's earned through Sean Downey's Dutch Food Valley Classic victory. It is uneven how much HC race days each team has ridden so far, but here's a look at the teams who have scored the most from these outings to date. (Excluding Eneco Tour)
HC
| 1 | | Pendleton's | 340 | | 2 | | Oz Cycling Project | 176 | | 3 | | Becherovka - Petrof | 144 | | 4 | | Ayubowan! | 103 | | 5 | | Venchi | 100 |
So, onto the standings - and the three way fight for the lead is looking as close as ever! At the end of the Ardennes Classics, Festina led the division by a single point ahead of Becherovka. The Vuelta took Vesuvio ahead of both of them, but Bewley's recent win takes Becherovka back to the top spot, and a 29 point lead.
Aker won't be too pleased with the Ardennes but remain Top 5, although they are now behind the ever-consistent Tinkoff. The Russians are within 500 points of the lead, so surely not out of it yet. Good Energy rose as high as 5th after the Ardennes, and are still sat nicely in 6th.
The only new entry to the Top 10 is Metinvest, up 4 thanks to Pluchkin. They entered the Vuelta less than 200 points away from relegation, and that gap is much wider now. They are now just 11 points behind Oz Cycling in the battle for best newcomer, having pushed Quickstep out of the Top 10.
We have a 10 way fight for avoiding the bottom 5 relegation places at the moment, with in particular less than 400 points separating 13th and 21st. Volkswagen and a disappointing Red Bull are at the front of this battle, ahead of Bacardi who climb 5 places thanks to Tenorio's big race. Pendleton's HC scoring is the difference between safety and relegation at the moment for them.
Cunego has done enough to keep Meiji out of the relegation positions, but only by 25 points, and now the hard part of the season begins for them with Movistar and Orange both particularly close to them. Bouygues have slipped to 20th while Ayubowan continue to put up a great fight. Still Swisscom have been unable to close that gap though.
| 1 | 1 | | Becherovka - Petrof | 4585 | | 2 | 2 | | Vesuvio - Accumalux | 4556 | | 3 | 3 | | Festina-Canal+ | 4480 | | 4 | 5 | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 4127 | | 5 | 4 | | Aker - MOT | 4031 | | 6 | 9 | | Good Energy | 3708 | | 7 | 6 | | Pokerstars.com | 3600 | | 8 | 10 | | Project 1t4i | 3447 | | 9 | 7 | | Oz Cycling Project | 3415 | | 10 | 14 | | Metinvest-Dacia | 3404 | | 11 | 11 | | Venchi | 3226 | | 12 | 8 | | Quickstep | 3111 | | 13 | 13 | | VolksWagen - Andritz | 2883 | | 14 | 12 | | Red Bull - Huawei | 2871 | | 15 | 20 | | Bacardi Limited | 2765 | | 16 | 15 | | Pendleton's | 2722 | | 17 | 17 | | Meiji - JR East | 2654 | | 18 | 16 | | Movistar - US Postal | 2629 | | 19 | 19 | | Orange - KLM | 2627 | | 20 | 18 | | Bouygues Telecom | 2582 | | 21 | 21 | | Ayubowan! | 2497 | | 22 | 22 | | Swisscom - UBS | 2059 |
Sam Bewley is of course the individual rankings leader, with Cunego now up to 3rd after his Grand Tour racing. Ponzi's winning streak has moved him to 4th, while Swift holds 5th place. The Ardennes help Spilak and Bakelandts to enter the Top 10.
On the Vuelta GC front, Pluchkin is a 'new entry' at 8th, with Gesink, Tenorio and Phinney into the Top 15 and Dekker now 22nd.
| 1 | 1 | Sam Bewley | NZL | | Becherovka - Petrof | 1928 | | 2 | 3 | Yuri Trofimov | RUS | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 1352 | | 3 | 7 | Damiano Cunego | ITA | | Meiji - JR East | 1284 | | 4 | 17 | Simone Ponzi | ITA | | Good Energy | 1189 | | 5 | 8 | Ben Swift | GBR | | Vesuvio - Accumalux | 1177 | | 6 | 4 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | NOR | | Aker - MOT | 1135 | | 7 | 13 | Simon Spilak | SLO | | Festina-Canal+ | 1095 | | 8 | 509 | Aleksandr Pluchkin | MOL | | Metinvest-Dacia | 1092 | | 9 | 2 | Andy Schleck | LUX | | Vesuvio - Accumalux | 1063 | | 10 | 12 | Jan Bakelants | BEL | | Bouygues Telecom | 973 | | 11 | 5 | Riccardo Ricco | ITA | | Festina-Canal+ | 953 | | 12 | 29 | Robert Gesink | NED | | Project 1t4i | 924 | | 13 | 121 | Justo Tenorio | ESP | | Bacardi Limited | 890 | | 14 | 9 | Tejay Van Garderen | USA | | Movistar - US Postal | 856 | | 15 | 20 | Taylor Phinney | USA | | Venchi | 834 | | 16 | 6 | Angel Madrazo | ESP | | Quickstep | 831 | | 17 | 11 | Fabian Cancellara | SWI | | Red Bull - Huawei | 757 | | 18 | 10 | Mikhail Ignatiev | RUS | | Metinvest-Dacia | 642 | | 19 | 16 | Marcus Burghardt | GER | | Oz Cycling Project | 593 | | 20 | 36 | Peter Sagan | SVK | | Becherovka - Petrof | 590 | | 21 | 32 | Toms Skujins | LAT | | Red Bull - Huawei | 578 | | 22 | 114 | Thomas Dekker | NED | | Orange - KLM | 571 | | 23 | 15 | Alexander Kristoff | NOR | | Aker - MOT | 568 | | 24 | 28 | Rasmus Guldhammer | DEN | | Aker - MOT | 560 | | 25 | 30 | Ben Gastauer | LUX | | Vesuvio - Accumalux | 548 | | 26 | 18 | Diego Ulissi | ITA | | Bacardi Limited | 528 | | 27 | 24 | Georgos Tzortzakis | GRE | | Festina-Canal+ | 514 | | 28 | 19 | Vladimir Gusev | RUS | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 494 | | 29 | 23 | Michael Van Stayen | BEL | | Venchi | 488 | | 30 | 14 | Dan Holloway | USA | | Red Bull - Huawei | 486 | | 31 | 21 | Roger Kluge | GER | | Pokerstars.com | 454 | | 32 | 63 | Sergei Pomoshnikov | RUS | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 440 | | 33 | 67 | Erik Mohs | GER | | Pokerstars.com | 434 | | 34 | 39 | Alejandro Valverde | ESP | | Pendleton's | 432 | | 35 | 22 | John Degenkolb | GER | | Pokerstars.com | 423 | | 36 | 46 | Giovanni Visconti | ITA | | Oz Cycling Project | 422 | | 37 | 25 | Adam Blythe | GBR | | Good Energy | 419 | | 38 | 56 | Jack Bobridge | AUS | | Oz Cycling Project | 402 | | 39 | 26 | Daniel Martin | IRL | | Aker - MOT | 392 | | 40 | 80 | Timofey Kritskiy | RUS | | Tinkoff Bank - Tinkoff Insurance | 385 | | 41 | 511 | Andrei Amador | CRC | | Swisscom - UBS | 367 | | 42 | 58 | Francesco Ginanni | ITA | | Pokerstars.com | 365 | | 43 | 27 | Jerome Coppel | FRA | | Festina-Canal+ | 365 | | 44 | 78 | Thibaut Pinot | FRA | | Ayubowan! | 354 | | 45 | 31 | Thomas Faiers | GBR | | Pokerstars.com | 352 | | 46 | 34 | Ruben Zepuntke | GER | | VolksWagen - Andritz | 349 | | 47 | 55 | Dimitri Claeys | BEL | | VolksWagen - Andritz | 344 | | 48 | 77 | Aleksandar FlĂĽgel | GER | | VolksWagen - Andritz | 343 | | 49 | 35 | Frederik Nolf | BEL | | Metinvest-Dacia | 333 | | 50 | 85 | Blel Kadri | FRA | | Ayubowan! | 328 |

Very bad Ardennes and Vuelta considering we had preety good lineups..but oh well could have been worse I guess. The way the season is going 10th will not be possible, maybe 11th as best..shame..but next season should see improvement.
The fight for the title will be intense, and bottom places...its so tight as well, lots of excitement.

Well Cunego has been good, but secondary scoring has been pretty bad. Was expecting Napolitano to be a bit better, and Ji and Shikai as well as Zaini. Hopefully they can start scoring more now, since I think Cunego only has Lombardia left, but if not, we will probably slip into the relegation spots.

First off, Vuelta was a complete disaster. I am beginning to regret some of my pre-season planning choices. Certainly Red Bull had a bit of bad luck in Guerao not sprinting anywhere near like he should have done - but then he has done that in previous seasons. Beginning to get fearful of the dreaded 'r-word'.
Coppel winning in Suisse hardly improves my mood - that said it is nice to see a really good three way battle at the top of the team standings. Spilak not going to the Tour may well be a mistake if he doesn't actually start winning properly - winning stages and GC comfortably like he should be. Bechorovka are Bewley pumped - but also others are doing well bar Howard. Vesuvio remain favourites but certainly not odds on.
Relegation - UBS are in deep doggie do of course. Ayubowen are clinging on like one that don't flush. Bouygues, Orange, Pendletons and ourselves mixed in with some of the other promoted crud. Hoping that some of Pendletons HC luck really when it comes to mixing it with the HC crowd.

Well if Spilak ends up being the highest scoring GC rider I guess the planning wasnt that much of a mistake, but clearly if he gets overtaken by more than 1 it could well be what cost us a PT podium. I need him to deliver in Switzerland... But seeing that Spilak has so far had problems winning races/stages, I do think he will be scoring best from spreading out the risk.
Anyway: Very close at the top with just 100 points between 1 and 3. I hope that we are leading the PT after Tour de Suisse, as we will have a very bad Tour de France. I suspect that Becherovka will outscore me there by atleast 500 points, and probably closer to 700. I can really figure out what/who Vesuvio will bring to the Tour.

It's definitely been a good series of races since the last update for us. Didn't realise the Vuelta or the Ardennes classics had gone so well for us compared to the other teams, and it looks like we still might survive with a little luck. |

Bloody hell, that looks grim.
Bakelants only has 2 races left after his disappointing Ardennes he's not had a great season. Taaramae on the other hand has only raced once, and now has a crucial Dauphine/Tour coming up where we need him to get some big points. In fact, that's probably the only thing that's going to save us...

Enjoying our most probably last days in the Top-10! It can only become worse now. We will score worse in Le Tour than we did in Giro/Vuelta. Metinvest should easily fly past Oz, for example.. Still looking good points-wise: Pozzovivo/Morton won't be special, but I hope they will score consistent points in their remaining stage-races. Burghardt hasn't been special, but did bring Oz solid points. Hoping for ToNE to go his way. I better not hope for the Copenhagen TTT though: I actually started to hate timetrials We may see a huge change of focus next year! Even though it must be said, that it's kinda fair, that there's some "random" stuff happening on all kind of terrains. Cobbles as some kind of exception?
Pendleton in HC races though

Well we had a decent showing since the last update, but still haven't closed the gap at all really. Just waiting on Amador to win the Tour, then we should be back in the running

Tenorio is really helping us out. After a disappointing Tirenno, he had an amazing Vuelta. Unfortunately no stage win, but still a lot of points. Our Ardennes were pretty disappointing though, as Ulissi didn't perform at all there.
We've got a leader left in pretty much every race from this point on, so who knows, survival might be possible. It's all very close togheter though, and one rider over/underperforming might be the difference between staying up or going down.

Thanks for the update, what a pleasant look for Metinvest. It seems that we are all about GTs this year and it should save us in the division for the next year. If the Tour will go at least nearly good as Vuelta, we can even manage a top 10 in the end and that would be something!
Few more races like TONE or TTT can see also some points, so everything is looking great now. And Pluchkin should be again only 85 climber in France.
The top3 fight is great to watch and some intense fighting on the other side of the rankings too. I fear Meiji can be in trouble now, when they have no lot of Cunego races to save them. Ayubowan doing great, i really expceted a dead last place for them now, nice job jph!

Wow, still in the lead, a massive surprise for me! Looking really good for me at least for top 3 overall in the end of the season then. If we have really a chance to win it all will probably decide Bewley's and Velits' Tour de France. Vesuvio still the biggest favourite for me now.

For me it's yours to lose really. You have strong riders for not only the Tour, but also a lot of other races.
Vesuvio will likely have Andy Schleck and Swift riding some smaller races, but I think you will be stronger.
I need to be extremely lucky to keep up with both of you. Spilak needs to win his remaining races, then we might be able to put up a great fight.

So, so close at both ends of the table.
Both Dekker and Sicard have a fair few races left this season, while I suppose Cunego is done (or close to it), so Meiji should be within sight... But there's so many teams involved in this, so it can pretty much end up with everything.
I mean, even VolksWagen - Andritz at 13th could possibly relegate. |

Thanks for another update, SN!
Being fifth after a period including the annoying Ardennes week feels good, and hopefully that was our worst races according to our riders abilities, then we should be up there fighting for a top 5 all the way.
To have three teams so close at the very top is very interesting seeing two GTs are done and it's only the Tour left of those obvious big points haul races, however, with the pure class that those teams have, it only takes another good race to bring in 500-600 points or more.
The other end is also very tight except for Swisscom-UBS, who needs to find another gear in the second half of the season. And it's kind of cool to see HC races make Pendleton's stay above relegation! |

Good job there by Pendletons in the lower division visits.

13th to 21st separated by 400 points. And top 3 separated by 100 or so. Looks very close.
How many races left? |
