Plenty of teams have tackled this stage as a proper stage, recording some great times. I think this pretty much shows this stage could have been used for the GC. The major risk factor here is the size of the teams. 9 is too much imo, so they could divide the teams in two parts like they do in the Settimana Coppi-Bartali, iirc.
Anyway beautiful location
The major risk factor wasn't team size, it was incredibly poor stage design. Surely they could of used the roads in the area as they look perfect for a fast TTT, I actually the TTT but even if this was held on normal roads it would of still been pointless with a stage length of 7 k's, its just waaaaaay to short for a TTT

This shit is just absurd. Considering how fun this first week could be, I am at a loss for words at how incredibly stupid this makes the Vuelta look. |

The sponsor paid, so the jersey is awarded to present the sponsor.
Nothing to do with sense or reason, just money.
About the stage: Some teams managed to put in some balls and effort
and delivered a decent TTT others just chickend out.
It wasn't an optimal route for a TTT, sure, but apparently it was doable.
It's a bit like decending with around 100km/h on a narrow road
with a shabby surface. It simply is part of pro cycling.
But as always: some whine and some do. |

BMC won the team time trial. Velits in the red jersey tomorrow.
Sagan...I mean, Tinkoff-Saxo became number 2 and Orica-Greenedge number 3. |

I disagree. It's not poor, it's innovative. they have ridden sterrato in Italy and pavé in France, why make such a big deal out of this? The terrain held up pretty well and I don't even recall any rider having a wheel slip, or one of those near crashes, which are often seen in TTs. No punctures either.
Asking why they chose this route is rather unnecessary. It would have been good entertainment, that's all. Most people that watch GT stages don't care a single bit about the sport, they just want to enjoy the scenery, let's not forget about that.

They don't have 9 riders in formation on TT bikes going full gas riding over the cobbles of Roubaix or the Serrato in Italy, it's in noway comparable. Yes the course did hold up today but for the most part the teams were not giving it there all to avoid accidents and so it's also no surprise there were no punctures. If they wanted a spectacle then it's easy enough to create a course to do that but this course was not that, it was poorly thought out and the fact they neautrilized it proves that point. I also don't think that changing the route or say having this as a prolouge would of detracted from the scenery to the viewing audience

I think they calculated Velits 1st, Sagan 2nd, Meyer 3rd and Keizer 4th, which is weird.

Is it just me, or is anyone here enjoyed the TTT. I mean you know this is a grand tour, anything can happen, be it inventing new type of terrains, etc. I guess riding in a sandy terrain is not far different from cobbles and dirt.

Exactly and of course the whiny primadonna cyclists who are also most likely the doping cyclists complain enough to get it neutralized. |

Enjoyed that TTT. Sagan once again looked superb, but going against BMC and Orica was always a big ask. It was an interesting curiousity that stage what annoys me about it is that much of the stage would not have been able to be ridden normally.
They could have designed that in so many other ways yet they went with that which turned out to be neutralised. I have not heard too many teams or riders complain about the decision on,y the organisation.
It could well be that is was neutralised allowed some teams to go for it more freely. Some teams like Garmin, Sky calculated no real need to push much like a team without a sprinter on a flat stage.

Farcical the way it was organised, but it ended up going off fairly well.
Today's stage should give us a good look at who is on form and who is not. My preview is here.

Hang on... They neutralised the stage? Why?

apperantly organisers value the combination jersey above the KOM jersey, which then makes sense. 4th team gets the 4th jersey.

Nibali had to wait a long time for a new bike and the peloton doesn't seem to slow down.
