Vuelta a España 2015 pre-race thread

I still find it astonishing that Purito managed to lose that Giro. He's been slowly clawing back my respect over the past few years but I never looked at him the same way after that awful, awful race.

2012 Giro was bizarre race. After 2011 where everyone got ass handed to them by Berti, we had faux battle of the has beens Scarponi and Basso and the last kilo attack minded Purito. Basso's team kept controlling controlling waiting fir bug Basso 'acceleration' that never came. It was rather like the old Team Milram train that kept forming train even after their sprinter retired, it was as if team had trained to race one way and to hell with it they would race that way.

Hesjedal has proved since then that he is obdurate in last week of GT, but really lacks power in the earlier days. A prime example of pussy footing about early in saving it for later but far too late.

Hesjedal was like that in that Giro a bit too. He was cracking on the first mountain stage to Lago Laceno and if he had dropped with the second group that day, he wouldn't have won the GT.

Yup, and he was stronger at the Vuelta. Difference being he was up against frickin Ryder Hesjedal in Giro and Contador and Valverde in the Vuelta

Ryder Hesjedal is the typical 3rd week rider. A very rare rider who doesn't lose anything of power in 3 weeks and therefore comes to the front there. But lacks explosivity to keep up in the first week especially. Same category: Kruijswijk.
It's funny, in 2012 they were so busy looking at eachother that Hesjedal never cracked badly and could exploit his strong 3rd week to win it.

You might at well put Quintana into that category as well, apart from the fact he actually gives a fuck about the first couple of weeks contrary to Hesjedal which probably is the most odd rider (one of at least) in the peloton. Ill never understand him

It also helps that in most of his GT's he's never been a serious threat for the overall excluding 2012 obviously, there is something about him that the other big GC riders just don't take seriously and to be honest his GT win was a very weak race. I really liked watching him in this years Giro but yeah he certainly is an enigma

Part of it has to be his riding style (is it worse than Cadel Evans) and the fact he looks quite large compared to other GC riders. He always looks like he's about to crack, but doesn't usually. He always seems to be in the wrong end of a split in the first week too. Also usually has terrible support, but I remember Vande Velde did do pretty well in the 2012 Giro.

baseballlover312
Vande Velde and Stetina were actually pretty good in that Giro for him.

He's the kind of guy that doesn't take a lot to drop but takes a lot to really crack.

Logically speaking, this year's winner will be a relatively old outsider who is looking for a new contract. My guess is Igor Anton.

I think Daniel Moreno will win.
Why?
He has not raced in 1st 2 GT unlike another GC contender.
He has been 5th already in 2012 Vuelta so he has GC potential.
He generally thrives around Vuelta.
His 4th at San Sebastián is a proof that he is getting upto form.
Purito will be more than happy to help him.
He needs contact for next year.

Seriously I think he can make top 3.

Fränk Schleck is going to do a Horner this year.

Agree on everything, apart from Rodriguez 'gladly' helping Moreno, dno why you think Rodriguez will help anybody at this stage of his career. He has helped Valverde way too much considering his talent 06-09

Well he does need a contract for next season so he might pull something out of the bag here but I think he will struggle, maybe as stage win but one thing I know for sure is there is noway in hell Purito will work for him.

Lets be realistic here. Igor Anton or any outsiders like that just won't win with the names on the potential start sheet. It will be the normal GC favorites(Valverde, Froome, Quintana, Nibali etc.) plus maybe Landa. It would be brilliant to see an underdog(especially older like Frank Scheck or Dan Moreno) to win but it is too hard considering the presence of hungry riders like Quintana, Nibali and Valverde. They would love to win this race as they haven't won a GT this year. They will fight hard in the mountains and riders like Anton, Dan Martin or Andy Schleck have no change at all as much as I'd love to see it happen.

Moreno and Purito are good friends, and Purito used to not be able to turn up to a GT without his trusty lieutenant at his side. Perhaps he might want to repay some of the assistance Moreno has given him over the years? Just a thought.

Did anyone expect Cobo to beat Nibali, Wiggins and Rodriguez?
Did anyone expect Horner to beat Nibali, Valverde and Rodriguez?

It's logic man! Every odd year, the win goes to an outsider. It's tradition!

Yep just like Horner couldn't win in 2013 with Nibali, Valverde, Rodriguez, Pozzovivo in the field and Cobo couldn't win in 2011 with Wiggins, Nibali, Menchov, Van Den Broeck in the field.

What this man said, the bond between the two cannot be understated. I don't know if Daniel Moreno can go the full three weeks in the General Classification but Purito has passed up potential stage victories at the Vuelta a Espana for Moreno in the past, depending on the stage sometimes leading him out in the process as well.

It is a bit of a step up to working for Moreno in the mountains for three weeks but it isn't an impossibility if Moreno finds himself on top of the world and Rodriguez is way off the pace with his personal ambitions for the race in tatters.
