The Fred Whitton Challenge is one of the most popular sportives in the UK and is also famed as being particularly difficult. Riders rank it alongside European events such as the Marmotte in terms of difficulty.
The Fred Whitton consists of a 112 mile sportive around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes.
As the name suggests, it is run in honour of Fred Whitton. Fred, who died aged just 50 in 1998, was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club.
Fred Whitton.
Until his untimely death at the age of 50 in 1998, Fred Whitton was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club. In his capacity as club secretary he was full of enthusiasm for the club and ran it practically single handedly. He was the organiser of the Lakes Road Club Easter 3-day each year which attracted many of the UK’s top riders.
Not only was Fred the main instigator behind all the clubs activities, he was always there on the club runs and training weekends, cracking a joke, having a laugh and generally enjoying the sport to the full. Amongst all this, Fred also managed to find the time to be the Lakes & Lanc’s Division Road Race Secretary and was well known and liked throughout North West cycling circles.

Who are we?
TVM - Sanyo is a new team to the continental tour in 2015. The team originated when - after 15 years out of the cycling spotlight - the Dutch insurance firm Transport Verzekerings Maatschappij (better known as TVM) announced that they wished to get involved in the professional cycling peloton once more.
The timing was fortuitous, to say the least. Cycling in the Netherlands had just been dealt a bitter blow with the news of the lone Dutch team sponsored by Shell folding. This left many of the country's finest riders without a home and the general public without a strong local presence.
The team would however, need a co-sponsor to be able to afford many of the riders required to make any significant impact. After a long search, the team finally found a backer with Japanese technology giant Sanyo agreeing to kick in the extra money if the team would also show off the finest cycling talent from 'the Land of the Rising Sun'.
This would not be the first time the two companies had come together, as they previously co-sponsored a team in the early '90s which rode in the 1991 & 1992 iterations of Le Tour de France. To commemorate this memorable occasion, the decision was made for the team to wear the same uniform that they competed in over 20 years ago (seen below).
We can't wait for the year ahead!

*As the current Japanese National Champion in both the Road Race and Time Trial disciplines, Nariyuki Masuda will wear a specially-designed jersey in our team's races this year.
Italian cycling is boosted as Saeco and Cannondale unite to form a new PCT team. This team are looking to create a home to fine Italian talents, with a nod to the past the team sponsors in particular are looking to devolop the next great Italian stage racing and sprint talents.
First signing - Salvatore Puccio
We are really excited to announce our first signing in young Italian classics expert Salvatore Puccio. We grabbed him during contract negotiations from Filliers, he certainly should be an interesting rider to follow in the short hilly type of races.
Transfers - two star signing lead an all Italian line up
After a busy first couple of rounds of transfers we are delighted to announce our first ever roster. Our team leaders are Stage racer Dario Cataldo amd sprinter Andrea Guardini. We felt that it was probably best to go with one really high quality all round stage racer and Stefano Locatelli and Morris Possoni should be able to offer decemt climbing support if needed. Andrea is probably one of the best sprinters not in the pro tour along wih possibly Theo Bos - there are a couple of decent Italian sprinters around Modolo and Ferrari spring to mind. I think with Trentin and Cimolai as back up if Andrea ever calls for a lead out he will get one.
We have chancers for the classics - I always think they are chancey races anyway. Puccio, Gatto and Mercato will lead us in those style of races and I hope we can play the trio to tehir strengths.
I am very pleased with all the riders in our team i think this gives us a really solid platform for future years.

We, the Geox-Kalev Cycling Project, have decided to join the Continental Tour. Looking at the developement of estonian racing (Tanel Kangert, Rein Taaramae, Rietmu-Delfin, Tour of Estonia,...) we want to take part in this exciting movement. Starting up this season 21 riders from Estonia and more countries will show our jersey all other the world. We want to improve our youngsters, satisfy spectators and sponsor, deliver the best we can do and fight until the end of every single race.

Spoiler
We were all excited to see the start of our first race as a team and it didn't take long before we made our mark. Van der Lijke went out in the opening day's break. He was one of the strongest climbers and when it became apparent that the peloton would not be able to catch them, he simply burned off all his competitors and took an amazing stage win in our first ever stage!
On stage two, we made our best efforts to keep his race lead in tact. There were attacks off the front and although Nick managed to keep up with some world-class riders, Dario Cataldo and Igor Antón would take enough seconds off him to take the lead.
Stage three was a time-trial, and while Hoogerland, Masuda and Bovenhuis all put in solid performances, Van der Lijke slipped back to fifth overall. Stage four was largely inconsequential, with a breakaway of eight riders taking the win while there were no time losses in the main peloton. Stage five was very similar with a small group of three riders taking the stage, but several contenders including Poels and Van der Lijke lost over a minute and dropped three places in the GC to 7th and 8th respectively. On the positive side, Van Poppel got 5th place after a great lead-out from Arashiro (8th)
With a top ten spot on the line, the final stage was a mountain time-trial. Johnny put in a spectacular performance to finish 7th and climb up the rankings, with Nino, Jasper and Boy also performing well. But it was not to be for Van der Lijke, as he would finish with a huge time loss. All in all, a good start to the year but not the result we had hoped for.

It was our first World Tour race and all three of our leaders were in attendance. Stage one saw the peloton mostly stay together, but a late hill saw Brajkovič and Coppel gain a small advantage on the field. Stage two was more decisive however, but not in a good way. We expected to do fairly well in the team time-trial, but ended up finishing dead last.
With almost all GC chances gone, surely it couldn't get much worse? Wrong again, as stage three which should have been our chance at a sprint finish saw star sprinter Theo Bos abandon the race. To make matters worse, none of our riders finished in the front group and lost another 56" on the leaders. It was put to the whole team that this was not an acceptable effort, and with our credibility on the line it was crucial to turn our race around.
While Gesink had gone in the break and racked up a lot of mountain points (as seen above), he would not be able to take top spot in stage four, but at least both he and Johnny managed top to get in the top twenty. Desperately wanting the race to be over, Hoogerland went into the break to salvage something from the race.
With the peloton closing in, the break still sprinted for the line. Amazingly, Johnny was going to make it. He was head to head with Jesús Herrada on the line...
...and just missed out. After a tough few days it was an agonisingly close loss, but we were all very proud of his efforts

I've always liked to watch Dario ride, he is more of your chrono man turned climber than a natural grimpaer. He does well though on sharp punchy climbs too, he is Italian after all and our roads can change gradients wickedly at the turn of a corner.
Dario has a steady diet of Chrono stage races this season and he found a really nice opener in Indonesia with a reasonably short list of potential challengers. Climber Igor Anton and all rounder Jan Barta were the best of the challengers. Barta couldn't live with the climbing legs of the Cat and Igor the terrible on stage two, meanwhile Anton could not stand the flat chrono on stage 3. All this added up to a comfortable stage win for Dario
It really got Saeco off to an outstanding start to the year, we hit Algarve in a confident mood. Unfortunately we were too confident really and the Cat had lost the bite of his opening race immediately slipping up on the opening day chrono. Dario battled hard to get into top form but was rather leggy in the Malhao stage finishing alongside the likes of Barta and Poels who he was ahead of in Indonesia. Ultimately the double header didn't quite pay off. Still both C2 races were a considerable success and got us off to a nice solid start to the year.
Low key opener for Guardini in Majorca
The pre-season races continued in Majorca and it was time for star sprinter Andrea Guardini to try and get his big sprinting legs in gear. But after a promising opening with a 6th and a 5th on the opening two days, he was left frustrated with a break snatching the win on the final day.
Bottom line was that Andrea was well beaten by Fenn, Impey and Matthews on a couple of occasions. This does not necessarily bode well for the rest of the season in which he anticipates the likes of Theo Bos to come in to give even more competition for sprints.
Something badly misfired here with the sprint preparations, it just maybe that Saeco have not quite got the right pilots fro Andrea or alternatively Andrea himself does not have the speed we thought he had.
The hilly battlers Puccio and Trentin managed a credible top 20's on GC battling hard to remain in the front group on the hilly stage 3. Not much more could be expected from them
Majorca was a disappointment, all it took though was a tight one down in one of these tight crit course in Australia to get Andrea Guardini's blood pulsing. We took a really big A+ team down here to race this 4 stager, it was basically two stages for The Cat and two for the Guard. To get the nod in the first road stage was a huge confidence boost for Andrea but it was a very tight one between him and Blythe.
The second stage win though was a much more comfortable affair and a bit of a precession with The Cat and Marcato also finishing in the top five. Andrea certainly now has his season well and truly on track with two wins from nine race days.
The Cat and Saeco control the rankings
With the National Capital Tour complete - February proved a second successive highly successful month for the team in red and indeed Dario Cataldo. The Cat has been strong in all three of his stage races dominating the Indonesian Tour, battling in Algarve and climbing well here in Australia. 1st, 6th and 3rd on GC is so consistent and Dario is really showing he has it all.
I though Eurosport had a really strong race in Australia and obviously they will have to be watched closely. We have had a number of run ins with them in the early season and this could be quite the rivalry.
Welcome everyone to, perhaps, the first in-depth preview ever for an ICL race. After a speedy start to the season the Giro d'Italia is already upon us. What better way to start the preview than to have a quick recap of the first edition.
The 2014 Giro:
All about Liberty Seguros!
In a season which was, at times, bordering on omnipotence the Spanish outfit started the race in blaring fashion. In the opening stage TTT they beat the next best by a minute and never looked back. For the rest of the race only Liberty Seguros riders donned the Maglia Rosa.
Contador would take the first GT of the ICL era!
Visconti taking a stage win for La Gazzetta Dello Sport!
The GC fight wasn't the only battle of interest though. Goss and Impey proved to be the top sprinters of the first ICL GT and there was plenty of breakaway wins for many teams, notably 6 Italians took a stage: will this be matched this time around?

Notably there are 9 potential sprint finishes, no surprise then that the two fastest sprinters on the planet are here! Vegeta will be looking to impress more than most, after all how often does a GT venture into Croatia?
Can we expect similar results this Giro?

No! In a big turn around Liberty Seguros don't really have any GC hopes. Notably all of the jersey winners from last season don't make the start list. There is no Contador and Quintana this time so Froome and Nibali are the standout favourites for this one.
The battle for the final spot on the podium looks to be a solid contest between Majka (Vegeta) and Porte (Prorace), the latter may be the favourite due to the TT and TTT, in which Majka may lose over 5'00 combined.

9 potential sprint finishes, just how many will Kittel or Cavendish win? Each have quality lead-outs to assure their favourites enter the final in the best positions. CarbonSports ambitions for the WT title will hinge majorly on performing fantastically in many stages. In addition to the above names we might expect the likes of Boonen and Modolo to appear in the mix. How well will Bouhanni go with his team also going after the GC?

The single TT does come deep into this Giro so the GC favourites may contest the win, if not the above will be challenging.
The TTT favourites:
Celesio Pro Cycling
Team Bunzl - Centrica
Prorace - Camtel
Difficult to call who will come out on top in the TTT, the above teams look to be the most likely to challenge for the win but each has weak-ish links. Gazprom and Petro China can't be counted out, certainly.
The teams:
Air China
Goals: Win the GC/ Two stage wins
With Nibali on the start list, taking into account his form at Táchira, they will fully expect a GC win here, notwithstanding Froome's presence on the startline.
-----
Allianz
Goals: Stage win/ GC top 10/ White jersey
After a surprising good start to the season they look poised to continue in the same vein. They possess a decent shout for a GC placing and multiple quick-men.
--
Avia - Orlen
Goals: Stage win/ Good KOM placing
They will be pleased that a certain Irishman is leading them in the sprints, and that is about it! They may hope for a strong showing from Scarponi in the mountains.
--
CarbonSports
Goals: Five stage wins/ points jersey
This team is all about the sprints. Perhaps five stage wins is not ambitious enough for the meticulous knockout?!
--
Celesio
Goals: Two stage wins/ GC top 10/ White jersey
The dominating WTT champ is present on the start line. Perhaps a waste of race days ( he only had 49 to begin with)? Celesio, therefore, will surely expect to win both stages against the clock.
--
Ecopetrol
Goals: GC top 5/ 1 Stage win
Uran and Duarte supported by multiple good climbers forms the line-up here. Who knows? Perhaps the podium is in reach?
--
Filliers
Goals: 1 Stage win/ KOM jersey
A quite weak line up here. Having said that Van Poppel might fancy a few podium finishes in the sprints and we may see some attack in the mountains from this team. Ligthart could be one to grab a win from a break.
--
Fiskars
Goals: GC top 10/ Stage win
The team send a quality line-up to the Tour des Fjords while here it is pretty much Kangert and the rest. The Estonian transfer from Liberty Seguros will look not to disappoint!
--
Fred Whitton
Goals: GC top 10/ Stage win
Fuglsang leads the team here in a very similar set-up to Fiskars. They also possess Ivan Basso, will he be a card in this Giro?
--
Gazprom
Goals: Win the GC/ 3 Stage Wins
After, somehow, not managing to win a GC with Froome last season, surely they will win this time around, right? Good support in the mountains and with one of the fastest sprinters, surely three stages wins is a minimum here.
--
LA Aluminios
Goals: GC top 10/ Team Classification
Pozzovivo and Cunego are the leaders here, surely at least one of them will make the GC top 10. Supported by Jeannesson they will be there or thereabouts in the team classification.
--
La Gazzetta Dello Sport - Gaerne (Wildcard)
Goals: Two stage wins
Two stage wins last year, can they repeat this feat? With Pirazzi, Visconti and Malori they look like the best stocked wildcard, poised for another good Giro?
--
Liberty Seguros - Würth
Goals: Two stage wins
A team which looks like it would be happy with one stage win, however, considering last year's heroics two stage wins have to be in the offing. Refreshing to see the team give different names a go, however, they will be hoping to podium/win the other GTs. Herrada and Verona are the top for this team which will look to hit the breaks and flash in the mountains.
LIUCPBM3CGIPBT
Goals: Two stage wins
A good cluster of Italians here.Rabottini and Capecchi are both decent enough in the mountains, surely they will be driven on by the home roads. After a fantastic ICL season 1 can Gavazzi challenge for a stage win here?
--
Prorace - Camtel
Goals: GC podium/ 1 stage win
After a stellar month of April it is all about the podium for Porte here. The Aussie looks to be the stand-out rider behind Froome/Nibali but you just never know. With the likes of De Gendt and Boonen also present, a stage win in addition to a good GC is expected.
What a fantastic start to the season for this continental wildcard to the Giro. Coming here they top the continental rankings, they might not expect any big GC place, however, in Guardini they have one of the fastest sprinters here. They will no doubt expect big things from him. Elsewhere they have a decent number of good decent climbers, surely good for a stage win?
--
SAP - Bianchi (Wildcard)
Goals: 1 Stage win
Breakaways are surely the no.1 priority here. Veelers might mix it up in the sprints but is unlikely to challenge, any success for the team here surely rests on the shoulders of De Marchi. Can he live up to his aggressive nature at this Giro?
--
SmarTone
Goals: 1 Stage wins
A super start to the season may well start to ebb away at this race, we might well see this WT lose major ground to the likes of CarbonSports here. Frank Schleck for the mountains and Farrar for the sprints are the team's best chances here, will be difficult to get a stage win by the looks of it.
--
Swiss Life
Goals: 1 Stage win
Will be very difficult for this team to do much here. Morabito looks to be their best hope, perhaps a GC top 20 would be a better goal? You never know, Feillu could get in the mix in the harder stages.
--
Team Bunzl - Centrica
Goals: 3 Stage wins/ Points jersey
Cavendish may have been surpassed by Kittel, however, his manager will still have hope here. With hopes for a TT win, perhaps a TTT win and a sneaky win from a break in the mountains (as they have done so often this season) they surely have to be after 3+ stage wins.
--
Team Parmalat (Wildcard)
Goals: 1 Stage wins
This archetypal Italian team lends 8 Italians to the startlist. They will be a bit disheartened by the strength of the sprinter line-up, however, they will have hopes of mixing it up in all sprint stages. Rouleur Oss could be a big player in many stages.
--

Goals: GC top 5
What a race for the Croatians, the race starts in their own back yard. They don't look likely to take a stage win in Croatia, however, a good GC with Majka is in their grasp. He will need to be in top form in mountains to hold off the likes of Porte.
Difficult to see the team doing anything to Majka underperforms, though.
--
To round out this preview, we will predict which teams will gain the most points. Will be interesting to see how accurate/inaccurate it is come the end. It is all good fun, it will likely be well off!
Saeco's 8 man squad have just completed the 2015 Giro D'Italia and whilst the big defining result was lacking the all Italian team were thrilled to be part of the racing. Saeco's colours featured in several breakaways with Luca Ascani in particular impressing with two top five finishes.
Andrea Guardini was unable to breach the podium but with five top five finishes showed some great consistency in his legs just behind the big guns such as the dominant Marcel Kittel and Mark Cavendish.
The consistent Cat continues to motivate squad
After a slight dip in performance in the Giro del Trentino and Ster ZLM Tour the Cat roared back into prominence with fine stage racing performances in Romandie and California. This included a dominant chrono performance on the final stage of Romandie.
Cataldo's mix of time trialling and gritty climbing performances continues to keep him and team Saeco strong in the Continental rankings and by default in line for a promotion to the elite division of cycling.
The team are responding with some really nice performances in classics and stage races with riders like Puccio, Dall Antonia and Trentin excelling.
The Cat warmed his legs out in Canada toward a 9th place on GC, however he stormed to victory in the Tour of Poland with a performance that reminded Saeco fans of the grinding consistency of the teams star performer.
Sitting in 3rd on GC before the final two mountain stages Cataldo marked his main rivals and put time into those around him to get to top spot on stage 6, before the team cleverly dropped the favourites before the crucial final climb on the final day.
Marco 'The Mini Cat' Marcato nabs some points in Bulgaria
The low key Tour of Bulgaria certainly wasn't on most peoples minds in the month of July but Marco Marcato managed to battle his way to a very decent 4th place on GC, underlining a new GC potential in the journeyman pro. Learning off of Dario Cataldo, Saeco are looking to try and move up a level in the following season and results like this should give the team great hope of promotion success.
Here we have it. The ICL15 Vuelta a Espana preview. With 7 flat stages, 8 hilly stages, 5 mountain stages and a 46 KM TT comprising the route this time around. Starting in Qatar and finishing in the Basque country the route is a good one.
Gilbert overjoyed after finally taking a win after several podium finishes.
The points jersey celebrates the stage win, the GC leader in second.
The CT wildcards taking a sprint win.
Valverde taking a stage win.
It really was a titanic battle between Rodriguez and Froome. Rodriguez would take a mammoth 7 stage wins but Froome would take the GC win with four stage wins along the way.

Second last season there is one rider who stands out as the overall favourite. It has to be Joaquím Rodríguez. With many big name GC riders missing he will target a comprehensive GC win and perhaps even more than 7 stages in the process, though will he survive Qatar?
Hard to call the second favourite but we are siding with Van den Broeck. The Belgian has targets on winning a GT and, one thinks, this might be his best chance. He will start as a favourite for the stage 13 TT and his great recovery sets him aside from the other GC contenders. Mollema, finished 6th last season, will fancy he can make the podium.
Betancur will be looking to match his stage win tally of last season on his way to a decent GC place. Then we get into a range of dark horses who could challenge for the top 5, including Anton from the irrepressible Telecom Namibia.
The Stage hunters:
Gilbert
Iglinskiy
Kennaugh
Nerz
Schleck
A good GC may be out of the question for the above but they will have eyes on some stage wins, especially with 8 hilly stages on the cards. Nerz won the penultimate stage in the last edition whilst, world champ, Gilbert will be hoping to add at least one victory to his stage win from last season.

You can't count out Rodriguez for a second points jersey here, but with three stages starting in Qatar and 7 total flat stages the allure of the points jersey and multiple stage wins has attracted many sprinting greats. In contrast to last season where Vangenechten was the fastest.
The top 4 will be difficult to out-finish in the flat stages, especially Kittel who has the edge with his lead-out train though Greipel will think otherwise. No likely train for Cavendish though. Lobato will try to match Ventoso and take a sprint win for the Spanish.
Left: Voeckler in yellow / Right: Gilbert winning La Primavera.
The Fabulous Baker Boys will be apart of ICL season 3 as Prorace - Camtel will become Prorace - La Boulangère.
Prorace, who have been one of the constant teams in the ICL, will be joined by La Boulangère who were heavily vested in cycling in the early 00's, a long stint in the yellow jersey in 2004 still memorable for many. The partnership will see the ICL team have a more French focus: which there is certainly a gap for with no French WT teams this season and only two CT ones.
Camtel is fully out of the picture with the dev team also losing Camtel. However, an exciting new Cameroonian based dev team is rumoured to be popping up under the aegis of the Korup National Park.
It is hoped this new incarnation for the team will spur it on to win some number of jerseys as the team look to go in a different direction: Prorace are still jersey-less in the ICL era.
Now we are two seasons down, it is a good time to have a little review of Prorace then Prorace - Camtel to see how the team compared to season 1. With Porte, Langeveld and Boonen the big new additions and Chavanel the only top name departing we felt sure of an increase in performance.

With a win in the final ranking race of the season, the 'World TTT Championships', we just managed to match our 14 wins from one season ago. Two short of our target of 16 wins and once again another season with no jerseys won. That said we can look back very fondly on the season where we only missed out on the WT rankings to a fluky Russian outfit - with a flukier Pole besides. Through winning 'Amstel Gold' and the 'World TTT Championships' we completed two of our goals outright, with three wins and a fourth place in GC in our other 'target race' the TDF. If our 2016 budget is based on these target races, other teams will do well to match that.
Gilbert, despite having an incredible Ardennes, did not fully live up to the WC mantle and has several wins less than last season. Our mantra of bringing in some hard nose veterans for breakaways did pay off which is the chief reason for us having more varied winners than last season and 6 break wins opposed to zero.
With Boonen and Langeveld we had two great scorers, the latter has to be a real contender for our rider of the season with his two TDF stage wins as Dutch champion. Though, they were hampered by breakaway wins, as so many of the top cobblers were. Vangenechten, as our top sprinter, really didn't live up to his showings in ICL season 1, a position that probably needs to be filled by a faster finisher.
GC wise - VDB (4th at Vuelta) really did step up this season, compared to last. That said, there weren't too many stages where he was at his very best - few top 5 Vuelta stage finishes attesting to that. Porte (5th at the Giro, 4th at TDF) really gave us great bang for our buck, if never threatening for a stage win.
So all in all a great season for the team - Prorace has become one of the very top classic teams of the ICL. But with dreams of jerseys and general classification victories you would be wise to expect plenty of changes for this ICL stalwart!
