How to conserve energy

Use the dot! When on the big final climb of the day, never leave your leader on the "follow" button. He will waste energy reacting to every little pace change and will haven nothing left for when the big attacks come. Instead, treat your leader as if he were a diesel engine and keep a constant power output.
1) Protect him with your 2nd best climber before the final climb
2) Get him to the front of the peloton just before the bottom of the climb
3) as he moves onto the climb, set him on the dot, and adjust the level so that he roughly maintains his position (often around 70-75 effort) - don't be worried if there are small positional shifts as the gradient changes
4) When the favourites attack, increse the dot level to slowly drag them back (75-85 effort usually works)
5) once they are reeled in, reduce effort back down to keep pace, or keep level high to drop the now tired favourites
6) Save some energy for the sprint at the end
By doing this I regularly get my GC rider to overperform in the mountains compared to his rivals when playing on Hard difficulty level.Home | Submit a new Tip & Trick
Thanks for explaining this clearly, I'm always to lazy to use the dot though haha!
My tactic is always to protect my two best GC men from the start, working through each and every domestique until only the leader and his lieutenant are left.
The last sentence does tell everything. This tip is stupid and and a cheat. Why would your raise the difficulty if you want to "over perform" regularly????? It is so easy to play fair on normal difficulty.
@Lachi: Why do you consider this a cheat? In real life the most successfull way of climbing is usually to ride your own speed all the way in stead of reacting to every acceleration the other riders may do. In 2007 Michael Rasmussen outperformed Contador by this tactic of reeling contador in slowly and then attacking away from him in the end.
i won the Tour with Wiggins on hard difficulty with this method>
@Lachi it is not a cheat, lots of climbers don't accelerate a lot, like wiggins, leiphiemer and Vande Velde, instead they climb at a relatively equal pace.
Correct, very few climbers are explosive (Contador is one example), most are rythmic when climbing, they just grind it out. Look at Andy, who rode away from Contador by keeping a very steady pace. Due to his bursts, a climber like Contador will tire faster if a steady rythem climber attacks him.
I have yet to see any rider climb like Lance. He could do both grind out a steady rythem or just explode off the front. He picked which he felt was the right way and did it per stage. 7 TDF wins later, seems that method is very useful. Very few do it, and none as well...Horner has shown it a few times. But he is at the down side of his racing days.
Tried doing this a number of time and just results in my rider falling further and further behind as the climb continues.
Im using team sky with Wiggins as my main rider and froome protecting him. About 1/4 way up final climb froome is exhausted and just drops back then 1/2 up Wiggins is the same. This is by putting the dot on about 80%, if its any lower then the pace of the favourites just leaves me behind.
Any ideas what im doing wrong im still yet to win a stage at one of the GT?
