While we're waiting: The Fix

I've been getting a lot of questions about what caused the crash, how we fixed it, etc., etc. - so let's start off with this as the first 'while we're waiting' news piece.

First of all, everyone should thank T-Photon. I didn't fix it, Cyanide didn't fix it, none of the good ideas coming from other well-known and respected database makers fixed the problem. The one who did was T-Photon. And the bug we suffered from seems to be a new PCM08 variant of the well-known March bug. I gave the .cdb to T-Photon, he fixed the March problem "in case that was what we suffered from", as he put it. I didn't think it was that, simply because the 'symptoms' didn't match what the March bug is generally known for doing - so I didn't test it until this morning.

And luckily for us, the fixed .cdb from T-Photon didn't crash.

But there's also some bad news related to this. There's some negative consequences of having implented the March bug fix. So far, we're only aware of one: It's impossible for Continental teams to seek wildcards for all Pro Tour events EXCEPT the three Grand Tours, Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and the Vuelta. In some cases, some will be picked automatically, in other cases only the PT teams will ride.

Other than that, we didn't notice anything.

Lastly, it's also worth thanking both bobcatsman and Im_the_best_coach. Both of them tried their best to help.

so there is still a huge bug in it? is it that bad if you leave the other one in, because is this bug not even bigger than the previous??

The March bug made it impossible to use the DB in more than one season.

That compared to no Continental invites ... I wouldn't call it neither 'serious' nor 'huge'.

That said, if the bug is too much for you, there's other 09 databases: RSM News 09 DB, P&A DB, etc.

The previous bug made the career crash on the day of the last stage of Paris-Nice so, it's not bigger.

well, in my opinion it is kind of serious. as a continental team, you don't have any control on the races you want to go to. I don't want to criticise your work, so don't take this personally, the only question I asked myself is, was this the best way to put it or would it be better to release it with the other bug so you can edit this with your editor when you got there, you see?

Personally I prefer jumping over the crash day with an editor, than not compete in the PT races you want with a CT-team.

Well... I can see, what you're talkin' about, but remember: There is a lot of people, and I mean a LOT, who doesn't know, how to use an editor... But for them/us who can, that would maybe be the best solution...

No, opposite. You can send get wildcards to Grand Tours, but not to other PT-events.

As I understand it, the March crash was caused by your stage variants for Paris-Nice. If one doesn't use these variants, but the same stages every year, and uses the "original" DB (without T-Photon's fix), would the game crash anyway?

That's not going to happen.

It's worth noting that it wasn't just one crash. If you get past the 15th, you're getting a new crash on the 17th and one again on the 19th. There's also a few in April. And this is going to happen in all years, not just 2010.

If we find a solution which is better than this one, we'll release a new .cdb. Until then, live with this or choose one of the other great databases which have been released.

maybe you could think of releasing it with the bug later, but I agree with you, first things first

and if you are a CT team don't exhaust your riders in PT races so you can win the CT rankings and get promote. Then you'll ride all the PT races

OK. I was planning to play as a (pro) continental team. If there is no way to apply for a spot in most pro-tour races, how are the wildcards selected? Will I get invited to some Pro Tour races by random, by results in general or results in races of particular typer or in particular countries?
