It’s the first real test for the future GC contenders. A long stage with 120 km of flat before the crazy trio of Hourquette d’Ancizan, Tourmalet ansd Luz Ardiden.

Ayuso is the big favorite, and only the Everesting duo seems able to challenge him for the win.

A huge break of 34 gets away. The main names are Arrieta, Hefnar, Torrico Menachio, Guavita. Garofoli is here to, to try to keep the jersey for today.

Some teams seem to think there are too many riders in this break, so there’s a succession of attacks before the mountains even begin.

Nobody can create a gap, and the break enters the Hourquette d’Ancizan (cat. 1, 10,1 km, 8,1%). The worst climbers/bigger workers give up immediately, but also Torrico Menachio or Garofoli. His stint in the break was for nothing in the end.
