All stars cobblers are in Belgium for the E3 Prijs. Pedersen is the obvious favorite, as always on this kind of terrain.
Let’s go for 211 km of racing!
A group of 9 takes the lead under the rain, as the first cobbled section will begin soon: Novardianto, Allegaert, Salazar, Maciejuk, Ansons, Ballerini, Pickrell, Hofstetter and Verwilst.
There were other attacks, but the peloton didn’t let go.
Allegaert is quickly dropped, while in the peloton a group of 6 didn’t make the cut. The teams chasing seem to be Rabobank, Cedevita and Evonik (?).
The break is quickly over, Neilands goes with a hard pace. 163 km left.
In the next couple kilometers, splits are done and undone on the hills and cobbles.
The pace isn’t too hard seem to think Stewart and Schäppi, so it’s an attack from the Swiss teams. Evonik chases hard.
There are plenty of attacks next, led by Louvel, but no move from the favorites yet.
A group of 12 detaches with 80 km left: Louvel, Salzmann, Lampawog, Van der Hoorn, Jansen, Stokbro, Chokri, Vahtra, Stavrakakis, Schäppi, Ulloa and Stewart.
121 men are 1’30 behind, though this peloton is very stretched. Tinkoff, Grieg and Carlsberg pace the peloton.
Kamyshev and Neilands are dropped from the pack.
Zepuntke is the first favorite dropped with 35 km left. The peloton is down to 64.
That must have been a technical problem, because Lapeira drops to bring him back and does it quite easily.
Favorite attack! It’s Kasperkiewicz with Gamper, Gerts, Tiller, Jacobs, Sulimov and Rutsch.
Le Berre leads the chase.
They’re brought back, but the group of favorites is reduced to 33. In the break, Lampawog is alone at the front.
And t he break is once again over with 37 km left. 35 men at the front… until Tiller goes away!
Van Hooydonck loses contact with 32 km left.
Pedersen is the next attacking, and nobody follows!
He has 40 seconds under the 20 km banner. There are 17 men in the chase group.
Per goes alone to chase him. Ovsyannikov and Spengler have been dropped from the chase group.
Per and Pedersen are probably the best classics riders in the world, and they’re together with 40 seconds on the chase group with 12 km and 1 cobble sector left.
Altur makes the catch. 8,5 km left, and Siric counters.
He has 30 seconds with 5 km left.
He still leads under the kite, but there’s been acceleration behind.
Incredible win by Siric!
Kasperkiewicz resists to Per and takes 2nd.
Tiller makes 4th, ahead of Altur and Zepunkte.
Then come Gamper, Jacobs, Anderberg, Senechal and Teunissen.
It’s a very disappointing 12th for Pedersen; then come Van Hooydonck and Gerts.
Leung and Andersen miss the time cut.
What a win for Siric!
This was but only an appetizer before the next big cobbled classics, but I hope you liked it.
See you soon!
