Welcome to Slovenia and the beautiful city of Izola (That I have actaully visited 3 times). We are here for a short C1 hilly classic over 146,1 km with a flat finish. We are here for the 6th edition of GP Izola
First edition of this race was raced in 2020 with a win from Wilco Kelderman. After him we have had 4 years with different punchy sprinters / sprint puncheurs winning the race. First with Marko Kump, then Clement Russo, Christopher Lagane and last year Rok Korosec. Last years win was important points for Trans Looney Tunes in their promotion push. Of the former champions only Korosec is back looking for his second win
Previous winners:
Spoiler
| Year | Winner | | 2024 | Rok Korosec (Trans Looney Tunes) | | 2023 | Christopher Lagane (Podium Ambition) | | 2022 | Clement Russo (Bonduelle - Eesti Energia) | | 2021 | Marko Kump (HelloFresh) | | 2020 | Wilco Kelderman (Philips) |
2024 results:
Spoiler
| 1 | Rok Korosec | Trans Looney Tunes | 3h31'45 | | 2 | Kristian Haugaard Jensen | Genii Hyundai N Cycling | + 24 | | 3 | Gonzalo Serrano | Euskadi-Murias | + 28 | | 4 | Odd Christian Eiking | Hilcona Racing Team | + 36 | | 5 | Bachirou Nikiema | Simba Cement - Tanga Fresh | s.t. | | 6 | Sven Erik Bystrom | Ethiopian Airlines | s.t. | | 7 | Quinten Hermans | Duvel-Tsingtao | s.t. | | 8 | Hayden McCormick | Cervelo Test Team | s.t. | | 9 | Ruben Guerreiro | Team Würth MODYF | s.t. | | 10 | Momchil Robov | Genii Hyundai N Cycling | s.t. |
As a hilly ranked race we will start of with the main puncheurs, and De Bie is the best of them, and with this being a shorter race it might fit him better than many other races. He also has a good sprint for the end if it is a small group.
Other strong puncheurs are Stannard, Eiking, Benoot, Hirschi, Van Niekerk and Vakoc. all strong puncheurs who will look to attack and get rid of the better sprinters before the finish, or at least tire them out. Riders like Turgis, Eriksson, Errazkin, Stocek, Bystrom and Jensen might also be worth mentioning here. Will also be interesting to see what veterans like Sagan and Vogt could do.
Among the better sprinters Demare pops out as a clear number 1 with his hilly ability together with an awesome sprint, but there are also some pure sprinters here, most notably Zabel, Boudat and Bol. They must really hope that the peloton stays together and they manage to hold on with enough power to surprise at the end. Other sprinters with a bit more hilly ability include Girmay and Alaphilippe.
Maybe the most interesting category are the strong puncheurs who can sprint, some of them has already been mentioned but we should not forget Oliveira, last years winner Korosec, Luchshenko, Grosser, Narvaez or Van der Poel who all might get a podium in a race like this.
All in all a very open race very anything can happen!

Historically this has been won by the Demare/Oliveira/Korosec/Luchshenko type riders. So naturally I hope Luchshenko can do seomthing here, but it is a very strong field.
Got Luschshenko as the "sprinter" with Vogt and Vincent hopefully trying to attack and then just hope for a good result

I don't have too high hopes, but getting some points would be nice.
Can't compete with Demare, but I guess Stocek isn't too bad placed compared to the other sprinters. Not the best support team though with mostly youngsers.
Good luck everyone.

Thanks Heine for the preview!
We have indeed two options with Vakoc and Oliveira. I hope at least for one top 10 spot.

Preety confident in Korosec being able to get a good result here how high just depends on how the race pans out but on this course beating Demare could be nearly impossible |

Any result here will be good, hopeful Rumac can be in a sprint.
Thanks to Heine for the preview.

Interested to see how our leadership double act works out here. Suspect it will be too easy a profile for Errazkin to have an impact, but curious to see if he goes on the attack, and also whether vdP is competitive if it comes down to a reduced sprint. |

Aidan coming off a good Strade Bianche, but we'll see how well he handles an easier finish.

Looking forward to watching this unfold as a C1 race, sadly not at the startline for it though!

Not too confident about our chances here. The profile doesn't seem challenging enough for the pure puncheurs and Stannard's pprd hasn't been up to his standard. Hope I'm wrong though. Thanks for the preview, Heine!

Typically Narvaez gets sent to races we have to do where he seems like a decent option. This is a rare one we chose for him. But the competition looks pretty tough so fear he will get squeezed out of even been taken seriously. In which case hopefully we at least go into the break.

Not that Bianchi need another win, but I would love for Korosec to go back to back and make it 3/6 home wins

Maybe Alaphilippe does something here, maybe Hermans, but certainly not Bettiol. I’m finding Duvel - Tsingtao’s lack of presence among the race favourites quite funny this season. There is so much depth and so many proper leaders around, all we can do is keep hovering around the edges and trying to steal cheap points where we can! It’s a fascinating season, this one.

Demare is the clear favorite for me here. Considering how this race has been ridden the last couple of editions.
For us, we need Eiking to be super agressive and gap Demare and the rest. Or, come in with a very selective group and luck out in the finale.
No big hopes, just wishfull thinking.

We really hoped for a top 5 here or at least a top 10, but how the race unfolded for Eriksson we should be happy he got 16th and some points at all.
Congrats Euskadi with an excellent Turgis win and thank you so much Kandesbunzler! |

Disappointing result for Van Niekerk. Perhaps too easy of a parcours for him. Congrats ignacio!
