Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 is the shortest sprint stage in the race at just 122k. Again only 1 sprint point.

Familiar riders top the favorites list. 4 different winners so far so maybe today is the day for a some of the guys who haven’t done much like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen (15th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/blt.png Zariff (27th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Groves (18th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/favs.jpg

4 riders on the attack with 100k to go. They have 30 seconds but the sprint point is only 6.6k away so this could come back together. The 4 out front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Vlatos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Krul, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Gonzalez Salas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/01.jpg

Gonzalez Salas cracks and drops back to the peloton, which relents in the chase. The 3 left out front take the points. Krul ahead of Vlatos. Both of them are useful TT riders so a few extra seconds might be worth some GC points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/02.jpg

A few more attacks are shut down and the lead grows to just under 2 minutes before the peloton starts chasing. With 67k to go it is 55 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Hansen on the front. Most of today’s stage takes place on a city circuit in Doha.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/03.jpg

The break is over by the 60k mark and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Klaris counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/04.jpg

40k to go and Klaris has just 8 seconds. In the final lap the riders will keep straight on here to the finish ahead (the 1k banner can just be seen), so the sharp turn comes about 3.5k before the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/05.jpg

Klaris is caught with 38k to go and cycleYorkshire, Indosat and Aker control the pace.

9k to go, the riders turn right here for the last time, next time it will be the drag race to the finish. The expected sprint trains beginning to organize.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/06.jpg

3.3k to go, the riders have navitaged that last turn, from here the course bends gently to the right the whole way to the finish. That means Aker’s positioning is probably best. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ruiz again surfing among the trains with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen. Puma slightly disorganized out of the last corner with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Gross trying to get back ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kanter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/07.jpg

1.9k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Zingle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Kemboi accelerate giving their teams the edge. Ruiz is in front of the Indosat train but Halvorsen has chosen to get behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Rodenberg who is following the cycleYorkshire leadout. Aker and Puma have become intermingled on the inside and lost ground, they are lucky the inside of the bend favors them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Groves who was right at the back has given up altogether now and doesn’t look like he will contest this. He has been getting progressively worse since winning that very first sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/08.jpg

1.4k to go. On the inside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Gross and seem to be sprinting for himself as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kanter has been caught further back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen has found himself in the middle of the road behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen who has connected with Ruiz. Yesterday’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen is behind Groenewegen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely is on the Indosat train, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Rodenberg on cycleYorkshire’s and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio are following the ELCO lead out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/09.jpg

600 meters, Gross to the front but with a big gap to Kanter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Aniolkowski behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen has started his sprint as has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen. The outside position may have caught up with ELCO and cycleYorkshire they have ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/10.jpg

200 meters for Groenewegen, maybe not following his train was the right call. Kanter and Philipsen closest to him. Aniolkowski is next. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis, who may have waited too long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen can’t hold it and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kanter takes stage 5, the inside position proves vital despite the hiccup in his train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen follows Groenewegen to get 3rd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Aniolkowski follows Kanter to 4th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen with his best finish for 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria finishes strongly for 6th, he has been consistent but could not get the timing right to get a stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely is 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Rodenberg 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali grabs 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S5/14.jpg

Kanter’s win gives him the GC lead by 1 second over Aniolkowski. The top guns are next – Cullaigh and Farantakis both on 5 seconds, then Philipsen on 6 and Groenewegen and Gaviria on 13 and 14 seconds.
Farantakis has to be the favorite to take the GC now needing 5 seconds or less on Cullaigh, Kanter and Aniolkowski, who are all relatively weak in the TT.

Aniolkowski has a 5 point lead over Kanter in the points competition, he thrived at this level last year and it is good news for Rabobank that he is keeping that up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Quintana holds on to the young rider’s jersey going into the TT.
