Stage 1 Report

The Tour of Qatar could be looked at as the same stage 5 times and then an epilogue. Today’s stage from Barzan Towers to Doha Golf club is the first of 3 145kish stages across the desert then we have sa lightly longer one and a slightly shorter one. But that monotony is intentional on the part of the organizers since this is supposed to be a nice clean test for the sprinters

Therefore, it is not surprising the big sprint names dominate the favorites board. 1-2-3 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen. Today will be the first test to see how their new sprint trains work out. They may get a trial run at the two sprint points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/favs.jpg

About 25k gone, a fairly fierce battle for the breakaway with the sprinter’s teams (particularly Aker and Indosat) not interested in a big group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Johansen who has just dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Durbridge has 49 seconds. Durbridge 10 seconds back, all other attackers closed down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/01.jpg

But the peloton accelerates with the first sprint point imminent and the duo is brought back. 1.5k to the sprint point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan on the front. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Larsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Groselj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Gross and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Groves. The big names a little too far back to contest this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/02.jpg

600 meters Gross on the front, Groves about to catch him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ruiz on the left behind Nur Hasan also in the mix. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen has found a lane but he is a long way back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/03.jpg

Groves wins the first sprint point holding off a late charge from Groenwegen. Gross rolls across in third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen came late for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/04.jpg

After that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Arias Villanueva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Resell get away fairly easily to form the break of the day. They have 1’30 with 101k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/05.jpg

Their lead peaks at 3’30 but by the 2nd sprint point with 58k to go it is down to 37 seconds. Arias Villanueva beats out Resell for the points. Behind the high pace has led to splits in the peloton with 58 riders in the front group. There are some winds today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh just edges Halvorsen for the last points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/07.jpg

After the sprint point the break’s lead goes back out to just over 1 minute and the peloton reforms.

50k to go the lead is 46 seconds. On the front are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Arif Prayogo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Räim
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Andersen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Stokbro
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Sagiv
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Hansen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Trondsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Salby
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Ballerini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Swift.

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen. Although all those riders are lined out only the front 3 rotating at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/08.jpg

The catch is made with 40k still to go and nothing much more happens. With 10k to go the sprint trains are beginning to organize. Indosat (Sagiv, Trondsen, Baska, Nur Hasan, Gaviria) controls the right-hand side of the road with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen on their train. In the middle it is Aker (Salby, Andersen, Swift, Sarreau, Konychev, Groenewegen). Next to them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Razumov is working to get pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov in position. On Groenewegen’s wheel are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Rodenberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Lutsyshyn. Between those two trains is cycleYorkshire (Hayter, Scott, Kemboi and Cullaigh). A bunch of sprinters behind them, furthest forward is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Groves. On the left it is the Puma train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Rubenis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Gross, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kanter. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely the most notable sprinter near them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/09.jpg

6.4k to go, The Aker train has squeezed out Indosat and cycleYorkshire and they are now intermingled on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio have got themselves into decent positions at the back of the Aker train. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Cavagna has charged up the middle of the road with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Zingle on his wheel giving Farantakis another option. But with 6.4k to go two riders doesn’t seem enough.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/10.jpg

3.7k, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Swift on the front ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Sarreau, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Konychev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen. Razumov leads Samulenkov behind them with Halvorsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali. Rodenberg in the wind right now with Lutsyshyn and Bonifazio behind him. cycleYorkshire have been shuffled back but have a nice position on the rail if it opens up. Indosat have managed to reorganize to the left of Aker. Their train is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria. Farantakis did jump to his own train but right now the Puma and ELCO trains have a lot of ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/11.jpg

2.6k, cycleYorkshire looked to be coming only to have Aker shut them down on the rail. Rodenberg grabbing Groenewegen’s wheel with Razumov pushed into the wind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Aniolkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ruiz are behind Minali at the back of that group. On the left ELCO have moved ahead of Puma on the left-hand rail.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/12.jpg

1.6k left, all the leadouts down to their last rider. Konychev a great last man to have and he has Groenewegen out front. Halvorsen has jumped in front of Rodenberg behind the Aker duo. To their left is the Tinkoff duo, Razumov has been done a lot already and is dropping back. Next over is Nur Hasan leading Gaviria, Nur Hasan not nearly as strong as Konychev. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen on Gaviria’s wheel followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Groves and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely. On the left hand rail it is Zingle ahead of Farantakis for ELCO with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Contreras squeezing in behind them and ahead of Rubenis who is still leading for Puma. cycleYorkshire have been shuffled well back again and it will be harder to recover this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/13.jpg

Under the 1k banner the situation is much the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/14.jpg

500 meters and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio who launches first, coming from well back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Aniolkowski behind hm. Starting slightly later are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria, with the Greek cutting in front of the Colombian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/15.jpg

200 meters, Bonifazio may have got a jump on the trains here, he has a nice lead over Minal, Aniolkowski and Groenewegen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Aniolkowski settles for 2nd on S1 this year, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Rodenberg gets up for 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis. 5th not great for ELCO but better than the other big guns. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Lutsyshyn is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen fades a little to 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Gaviria. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely is 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/20.jpg

Bonifazio is the points and GC leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/blt.png Evangelos is the best young rider.
