It’s here! The big finale and the queen stage.
The first half is relatively easy, but the next 80 km are packed with a HC climb and two cat. 1 including the finish in the Torre.
Almeida is the best climber here, but he’ll have a bit of work to take time to the like of Ranaweera and Darbellay – and obviously the leader, Evenepoel.
The first climb, Abergaria (cat. 3, 3,4 km, 4,8%) begins straight away. Tied in the mountain classification, Per went first, followed by Antonelli, Chumil and Barguil.
They’re caigjt by a counter attack though, and Van Gils adds 6 points to his tally of 10. Per can’t get any point.
After that there are lots of attacks everywhere.
A group of 17 is together at the intermediate sprint in Arganil: Rikunov, Carretero Millan, Van Gils, Barguil, Antonelli, Per, Forssell, Mamykin, Eg, Chumil, Lopez, Brozyna, Martin, Romo, Uwizeyimana, Balmer and De Plus. They have 3 minutes on a peloton led by Rabobank.
The 2nd climb of he day is the cat. 4 Mouronho. Per wins it and he takes the sole lead of the mountain classification. But there are 52 points on offer still.
And we’re on for the first passage on the Torre!
It’s a 27 km long climb at 5%, HC rated, with max slopes at 11%. A true race decider. The gap is 6’43 at the foot.
The break and the peloton quickly begin to lose riders.
Van Gils passes first and takes the lead in the mountain classification. The peloton is at 9 minutes now, which puts Van Gils, De Plus and Chumil very close to the GC lead. Still 61 km and two climbs to go though. Only 73 men in the pack.
Rabobank remain alone in the chase.
Halfway through the Serra da Estrela (cat. 1, 15,7 km, 4,8%), the gap is coming down, though it’s still quite big. De Plus paces the break, Ekoi and Gazelle now help to the chase.
Van Gils passes first again, which should definitely give him the polka dots. The gap is around 6’30 with 26 km left, 17 of which uphill.
And we’re in! This side is 16,6 km long at 5,4%. The beginning is by far the hardest part.
With 10 km left and the gap around 2’40, Rodrigues triggers an attack. Yates, Darbellay, Evenepoel, Almeida and Ranaweera follow.
They don’t go far, but Ranaweera insists. Bennett and Pira struggle.
Eg attacks the break with 6 km left.
Back in the GC battle. Under the 5 km banner, a group of 9 attacks: Leknessund, Ranaweera, A. Yates, Misbah, Reis, Rodrigues, Almeida, Plapp and Evenepoel. But the yellow jersey has trouble staying in the group.
Darbellay, Inkelaar and Wellens are some 1 minute behind; Skjelmose lost one more minute.
Last kilometer for a group of 5 at the front: Mamykin, Van Gils, Eg, Balmer and Barguil.
Evenepoel is dropped from the favorites group and already lost 30’’, which puts Leknessund in the GC lead.
Van Gils wins the stage and the polka dots! He should also make a nice jump in the GC.
Balmer beats Mamykin to take 2nd.
Eg and Barguil follow.
De Plus is 6th.
Carretero Millan is 7th.
Martin and Lopez make the 8th and 9th; behind the favorites are coming.
It’s Yates who wins the sprint to 10th, ahead of Leknessund and Rodriguez.
Evenepoel loses one minute to this group.
Darbellay and Wellens are 50 seconds behind.
It’s quite the good result for Van Gils and Lierse!
Leknessund wins the GC! He beats Evenepoel and Plapp.
Van Gils is back for the best climber jersey.
Kennett managed to keep the points jersey thanks to some smart and opportunistic riding. That’s the third podium without victory for Evenepoel…
But this one is for him: he stays the best young rider.
Evonik wins the team classification.
Thanks for following this week with us. See you soon.
