First race on the road race route. Areruya (RWA) and the Japaneses will battle for a place in the main event. Can Sagan (SRB) or Skujins (LAT) disturb the long awaited duel?
We come on air at half race. A group of 9 is 4’45 up the road (after the gap went to a maximum of 8 minutes). Bayer (AUT), Cataford (CAN), Zhao (CHN), Van Zyl (RSA), Matte (CAN), Lau (HKG), Jiang (CHN) Silva (SRK) and Hibatullah (INA) are in the break.
Philippines, Latvia, Rwanda and Japan are doing the chase. One tour left in the first circuit.
The 2nd circuit is repeated three times. It’s 2 climbs: Ardblair Hill (3,6 km, 5,1%) and Dochgarroch Hill (4,1 km, 9,2%).
70 km to go. The break is at 2 minutes. Roman (SRB) and Eriksson (SWE) attack. Ikibe (JPN) work to catch them.
The next attack comes from Yudha (INA). The break is at 1’20.
A small group joined the initial break and they are 10 at the front with 50 km to go.
The break is over with 45 km and 1 tour of circuit left. 118 men in the peloton, Areruya is already following the attacks.
There’s the first attack of leaders in the penultimate climb (barring the finish). It’s Godoy (BRA) and Amezawa (JPN). Areruya has to do the work.
We’re already in the last climb and Areruya goes at it! Amezawa, Kinoshita and Quita (PHI) are wit him.
It all comes together, and Kinoshita launches the next attack.
The things are quite moving as we begin the descent, but Kinoshita seems quite tired, and Areruya isn’t in the first positions.
Forget about it, they’re both in position under the 5 km banner. Kinoshita pulls the peloton, so it seems that Japan plays the Amezawa card. Shikai (CHN) and Carcueva (PHI) are riding too, in a group of 33.
Here we are for the last ramp! Quita, Sagan and Areruya launch the fight.
The position stay about the same in the climb. The last hundred meters are flat.
500 m. The climbing is finished and Areruya is in the lead now. Amezawa tries to follow him. But if he still has it to sprint, Sagan might be the favorite!
300 m. Areruya has a clear lead now.
And he does it! Areruya fends off the opposition and sends Rwanda in the Elite Worlds Championship! Quita is 2nd, and Amezawa 3rd.
No Herklotz, but a new strong contender for the World champion title.
