It becomes harder and harder on the road. No circuit today, but 7 categorized climbs, including the finish, along 167 km of race. The two cat. 2 on Karitkachi Tohge should be too far from the finish to have any real impact – that will be tomorrow, for the MTT -, but they could do damages anyway.

We seem to have a break settled right before the riders tackle the first climb of the day: Sakecka (cat. 4, 2,5 km, 6,3 %). La Grenade would not be able to join, as the break begins Karikachi Toghe (cat. 2, 5,4 km, 6,5 %). Though he’s not the best climber, Turgis demonstrates his punch and takes max points again. The riders will immediately follow to the observatory (cat. 2, 8,5 km, 4,9%). A repetition before tomorrow.

The Frenchman once again times his acceleration well enough. Ponomar and Steinhauser expectedly have a hard time to follow, but the descent should allow them to come back.

Rivera wins the sprint in Nakafurano, but more interesting is the next cat. 3 climb (2,7 km, 6,8%). Interesting? Not so sure, as it’s a 4/4 for Turgis, who now has 55 points against Natarov’ 21. The gap is 3,06 with 62 km to go; Steinhauser and Ponomar seem definitely dropped.

It’s a photofinish at the top of Ikutena Pass (cat. 3, 2,7km, 5,2%). Turgis seems the best. The peloton is at 1 minute now.

500 m. Kwiatkowski and Cepeda Hernandez are struggling in the hardest slopes. Vila and Meintjes are the fastest.

But Kwiatkowski resists and wins! Cepeda Hernandez is 2nd.

Meintjes wasn’t attentive enough to claim the win, but he’s still 3rd and beats Padun.

Vila is 5th, ahead of the Lierse duo of Van Gils and De Plus.

Kalaba follows in 8th, and will keep his leader’s jersey. Ovsyannikov is 9th and Budyak 10th.

Kwiatkowski takes the 2nd place in the GC, Natarov the 2nd place in the mountain classification. No other change for now. We’ll probably not say that tomorrow after the MTT on the road to the observatory. Stay tuned, that should shakes things up.
