After a heatwave with 4 forty degree days in a row last week, and then the hottest day in history, which reached 48 degrees in places with very strong winds pushing flames at 100km/h we have had the worst bushfires in our history. Many of them have been lit deliberately and even relit after volunteers and firefighters have put them out and it has been announced that the arsonists will face murder charges.
So far a few entire towns have been completely wiped out, and the death toll is at 131 although this is expected to rise further as emergency services cant actually properly inspect some of the worst areas yet, this makes it the greatest natural and probably the greatest loss of life in Australian history. This is the list of fires going as of tonight, bearing in mind that the worst is past, and this is just in the area highlighted here, i'm only a few hours away from some of them:

omg!
it must literally look like hell down under...
I hope you can somehow overcome that nightmare
We usually are harmed by a great number of fires too here in Portugal during the summer but obviously nothing like those proportions...
it is just crazy the global wheather these days. We've been having one of the coldest winters while you been having that unimaginable heat...

The news just said an entire town has been cordoned off by police as a crime scene to build the arson case

Cadel Evans commented on it yesterday, saying that his childhood village was pretty much gone. |

One guy has been charged with starting a fire that killed 11 people, some press are saying he did it as payback for his girlfriend cheating on him, as she was a volunteer firefighter.
They also found child porn in his possession

Death penalty simply doesn't work. The crimes punishable with death are unusually violent crimes, and the ones that actually commit those crimes aren't afraid of being caught. If being caught was a possibility in their head they would have never committed the crime in the first place. And this is not just me talking, dozens of jurists and psychologists have studied the subject thoroughly and came to the same conclusion.
Prison will be enough of a hell for him when the other convicts find out what he did... Especially for the child pornography thing...

I'm not a death penalty suporter pedruh I was just looking to aknowledge what will happen to that bastard.
In fact i don't think death penalty is a viable sentence in any case...
but I agree with you actually. Prison may be worst than hell for that guy!

If you ask me, life in prison is probably worse then the death sentence.

It's a bit relative and hard to say without living it but I agree.
