Clasica San Sebastian (PTHC) - Preview
Welcome to Spain for the PTHC Clasica San Sebastian. A nice trip in the Basque country, with some up and down all day. Let's have a look at the profile.
See, I didn't lie. Last year Nikias Arndt won this race for DuckDuckGo, let's have a look at the favourites and leaders for tomorrow.
Nat. | Name | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | | Lopez Miguel Angel | 80 | 84 | 76 | 74 | 66 | 78 | | Lutsenko Alexey | 73 | 83 | 76 | 73 | 72 | 81 | | Skujins Toms | 69 | 82 | 79 | 76 | 67 | 75 | | Areruya Joseph | 81 | 81 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 76 | | Buchmann Emanuel | 76 | 81 | 73 | 74 | 65 | 73 | | Benoot Tiesj | 75 | 81 | 75 | 74 | 69 | 71 | | Stannard Robert | 73 | 81 | 75 | 76 | 69 | 78 | | Ardila Andres Camilo | 81 | 80 | 69 | 70 | 62 | 75 | | Formolo Davide | 79 | 80 | 76 | 76 | 69 | 71 | | Higuita Sergio | 79 | 80 | 76 | 78 | 66 | 75 | | Valter Attila | 78 | 80 | 76 | 75 | 69 | 78 | | Aranburu Alex | 77 | 80 | 70 | 79 | 68 | 71 | | Vansevenant Mauri | 74 | 80 | 79 | 78 | 70 | 80 | | Hirschi Marc | 77 | 79 | 78 | 78 | 66 | 75 | | De Plus Laurens | 77 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 61 | 72 | | Schmid Mauro | 76 | 79 | 71 | 78 | 70 | 79 | | Kron Andreas | 71 | 79 | 75 | 75 | 66 | 73 | | Gebrezgabihier Amanuel | 70 | 79 | 74 | 74 | 67 | 69 | | Turgis Anthony | 67 | 79 | 76 | 78 | 70 | 77 | | Tesfatsion Natnael | 76 | 78 | 68 | 72 | 69 | 78 | | Amezawa Takeaki | 80 | 77 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 75 | | Schlegel Michal | 79 | 77 | 71 | 74 | 64 | 75 |
An impressive startlist. Lopez and Areruya as big names, but apart from that other well known PT race winners in the last season(s) in Lutsenko, Valter and Vansevenant.
The other PT teams at the startlist are not looking forward to racing against that top calibre of puncheurs I assume, but also for the PCT teams it won't be easy to score the biggest of points here. Nevertheless, names such as Buchmann, Stannard, Benoot or Hirschi might just have what it takes.
As seen on the startlist, there's several other interesting names that could easily get a top-5 or even better here, an interesting MOL duo in Ardila and Amezawa, the Jura youngster Schmid or one of the versatile riders in Formolo or Higuita. And that's still not even mentioning some strong names on the list above.
Good luck to all, especially all Latin American teams who have been unjustly accused of having anything to do with methamphetamine production in the past. Startlist in the spoiler below.

Some minor points would be nice I guess. Thanks for the preview!

Some more Mauri Magic I hope. Top3-8 would be nice to see. Therefore the selection can`t be too much and his sprint then should help.
Ideally he saves some energy instead of going onto the long range attack himself but still being attentive enough to not miss deciding splits. |

Nice to not have Herklotz, however it's the first of a few PTHC battles in the rest of the season between Areruya and Lopez still. Some other top riders here as well but hoping the MO influence shows itself. A podium is okay but as always we're here for the win, especially with no more Areruya until September. Have to make his RDs count, and hopefully Scandinavia gives him some swagger now he has a big win at the PT level under his belt.

We've been poor lately so we need a big result from Formolo here.

Another chance at glory for Valter. Obviously not a top favourite, but we dare dream after LBL where Herklotz was the only one beating him.
Personally, I fancy Vansevenant for the win, seeing how he raced before the Ardennes, eventhough it’s us against the mighty MAL and Areruya.
Looking a lot forward to the report! |

Thanks for the preview, Nemo! But we could clearly have done with a less stacked startlist, so all we can hope for realistically is a day in the break and maybe a top 20 by APP.

Not sure what to expect from Stannard, but a top5 would be sweet. Thanks for the preview, Nemo!

With the strength of this startlist we are probably looking at a top 10, maybe even a top 15 result but we might get lucky.

I think this race hasn't been that selective of late, so hoping Narvaez can hang on for a top 20.

it would be really cool if Alex Aranburu could do something, but I'm not optimistic.

Looking to get a Top 10 in this field with Benoot. This race hasn't been a great one for us in the past, hopefully our luck can turn around.

I feel the exact same way about Tesfatsion He's struggled against good competition so I'm not expecting much, but who knows ...

This is a race that feels like it should be good for Lopez but often can be somewhat random.

We'll have to hope the longer climbs don't hurt Lutsenko too much, because that startlist is packed with hybrids. If Alexey can stay with the first group until the finish, he does have the best sprint.

Ah, decent race by Higuita but seems to be a bit unlucky to have picked his moment not at the perfect time and in the end be the worst of group 1. Top-10 is top-10 of course.
Great race by Schmid on the other hand, as he seemed to have impeccable timing and some nice race day conditions, congratulations Fabianski!
Thank you jt for a stellar report

Damn, Aranburu was in about as perfect of a spot as you could ask for his skillset near the top of the final hill, and then just cratered backwards on the last descent. I guess he really is useless at this level.

De Plus at 24th is below expectations, but look at what Van Gils and Van Poucke did here! Thanks for the report and congrats to Fabi!

Im happy with this. 3rd is good in a race that always worries me. Positioning was very questionable at times, quite unacceptable but at least he didnt waste his energy too much...

We'll definitely take a top 5, even if it looked like we could challenge Schmid for that Swiss 1-2 as we started the descent.
Congrats on the win Fabianski
