[PTHC] Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Bienvenue à France pour le 18ème edition du Criterium du Dauphine Libere.
The first two stages are made for the sprinters before the GC fight will begin in the hilly stage 3. Then we have a 33 km ITT to get some gaps, but those who lost time will have three mountain stages including mountaintop finishes to get this time back.
The race is part of the MGUCI calendar ever since and was won by some of the best GC riders there have been, most prominently 5 times by Taylor Phinney. But the American isn’t here to make it half a dozen, so Morton is the only former winner at the start.
Previous winners:

2023 results:
Spoiler
1 | Lachlan Morton | cycleYorkshire | 27h25'10 | 2 | Joseph Areruya | Xero Racing | + 4 | 3 | Pierre Latour | Polar | + 36 | 4 | Ki Ho Choi | Sony - Force India | + 37 | 5 | Tadej Pogacar | Cedevita | + 1'01 | 6 | Mark Padun | Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska | + 1'25 | 7 | Orluis Aular | Los Pollos Hermanos | + 1'32 | 8 | Fredrik Strand Galta | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | + 1'46 | 9 | Marcus Faglum Karlsson | Assa Abloy | + 1'51 | 10 | Thibaut Pinot | ISA - Hexacta | + 4'04 |
The field consists of 8 PT teams and 12 PCT teams. Given the profile of the race there are three groups of riders to look out for: the sprinters for stage 1 and 2, the TTers for stage 4 and the GC riders for stages 3, 5, 6 and 7.
GC:
With three mountaintop finishes Morton should be the clear favourite for the GC – and he’ll have to make up for his loss at the Vuelta. Eastman and Reis are probably the biggest other podium contenders given their all-round skill set.
| | MO | HI | TT | ST | RS | Morton | Lachlan | 84 | 76 | 73 | 79 | 78 | Eastman | Ryan | 82 | 71 | 77 | 76 | 75 | Olivier | Daan | 81 | 76 | 69 | 76 | 80 | Galta | Fredrik Strand | 81 | 73 | 73 | 78 | 79 | Aular | Orluis | 81 | 72 | 70 | 76 | 75 | Shikai | Chen | 81 | 71 | 76 | 74 | 76 | Reis | Rafael | 81 | 73 | 76 | 78 | 76 | Giannoutsos | Miltiadis | 80 | 72 | 72 | 76 | 78 | Hirt | Jan | 80 | 73 | 72 | 76 | 78 | Cattaneo | Mattia | 80 | 68 | 77 | 73 | 77 | Min | Kyeng Ho | 79 | 76 | 66 | 75 | 77 | Lopez Nolasco | Luis Enrique | 79 | 71 | 73 | 72 | 71 | Powless | Neilson | 78 | 72 | 78 | 76 | 74 |
Sprinters:
The list of sprinters isn’t that impressive, which is no surprise given there are only two stages for them. There’s also no clear cut favourite for those stages.
| | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | Abdul Halil | Mohamad Izzat Hilmi | 70 | 71 | 68 | 81 | 79 | Walls | Matthew | 74 | 73 | 71 | 80 | 78 | Kemboi | Salem | 78 | 74 | 77 | 80 | 80 | Kalaba | Dusan | 74 | 70 | 72 | 79 | 79 | Lutsyshyn | Roman | 70 | 69 | 73 | 79 | 80 | Banaszek | Alan | 74 | 71 | 73 | 79 | 81 | El Sabbahi | Houcaine | 77 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 77 | Harrison | Sam | 72 | 73 | 70 | 78 | 81 | Zingle | Axel | 75 | 70 | 75 | 78 | 78 | Nommela | Aksel | 72 | 70 | 70 | 78 | 78 | Marin | Gabriel | 74 | 73 | 73 | 78 | 78 |
TT Specialists:
Given the rather few real surprises in TTs lately the winner of stage 3 should be one of those specialists.
| | FL | TT | ST | RS | Howson | Damien | 71 | 80 | 73 | 74 | Sütterlin | Jasha | 71 | 80 | 73 | 77 | Zakarin | Aydar | 74 | 79 | 75 | 70 | Razumov | Nikita | 74 | 79 | 75 | 72 | Goldstein | Roy | 74 | 79 | 70 | 72 | Powless | Neilson | 72 | 78 | 76 | 74 | Conci | Nicola | 71 | 78 | 76 | 75 | Cosnefroy | Benoit | 76 | 78 | 78 | 81 | Thomas | Benjamin | 73 | 78 | 75 | 73 |

Let's hope Cattaneo and Kalaba will do better than whatever the rest of the team is doing in Switzerland atm

Thank you for the extensive preview kandesbunzler!
I guess Tafjord will need to rely on breakaways this time around. Not much else to hope for in a stacked PTHC-race |

The way I see it, this should be a really good opportunity for Shikai to get himself a podium in what has so far been a pretty disappointing season. Morton will be tough to beat so I'd expect him to win it but it's a pretty open race for 2nd. With the support of Conci, I'd hope Shikai can put a strong case in for one of the podium spots. Would be a surprise to see Conci or Cosnefroy win the TT but who knows!
Thanks for the preview and looking forward to this one!

Big chance for Galta here, with a top 5 very much within reach. After Morton and Eastman, it could go to anyone. Oliver is likely the stronger climber, and Shikai and Reis both have the TT on him, but if any one of them falters a bit, we can get where we want, or even a podium.
This could also be a sneaky chance for Skejlmose to get a white jersey. Looking at the startlist, both Van Gils and Leemreize are better climbers, but could lose big in the TT.
I'm less comfortable seeing Walls so far up the favorites list for the sprints. We don't have a leadout, and he's a prime candidate to go way early and burn out. But I hope I'm wrong!
Thanks for the preview!

Another chance for Olivier to keep our momentum going in PTHC. I hope he is able to get something in the hill stage because I fear he'll be the worse off among GC rivals in the TT. Hopefully he can also make that up in the mountains but never know with PCM.
Thanks for the preview kb

Probably the worst team I'm using this season, let's hope for some breakaway chances.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Thank you for the nice preview, kb.
We should aim for decent stages and 2nd in GC with Eastman, but after his bad Giro I'm not sure what to expect. Sütterlin could aim for a stage win as well, and perhaps Marin is on the right side of the sprinting lottery for the first time this season

Thanks KB for the preview!
We're hoping on another top-15 GC for Min. Zingle gets a rare chance to prove himself in the two flat stages.

Great stage from Edmondson. Had some hopes He would atleast sprint in a race like this, so to take 4th is really solid!
I hope Giannoutsos Can salvage something here after my climbers decided not to show up in Switzerland at all.
It’s a bit of a coinflip whether or not he Will get a solid result though.

Nice try, unfortunately someone was stronger.
Van Gils and De Plus trying hard to lose time there.

Yeah, terrible from Walls. But I guess it's at least nice that a favorite one.

I guess Walls is more excited by finishing just outside the top 10, by however means necessary.

Wtf
Congrats to Llapi on the huge win!
But seriously that gap is stupid, can’t look at stats currently - were any of the break very strong roleurs or something? I just want to see Abdul Halil do well
