Before it hosts the Österreich Rundfart at the end of the month, Austria receives the C1 Pro Hallstatt Classic, a mountainous classic. 5 circuits and an uphill finish are on the menu, so most of the PCT best climbers are here.
A break of 10 opens the way. They’ll soon tackle the finishing climb for a first time, before entering the circuit. This one probably is the hardest of the day.
The breakaway riders are Benedetti, Ivanov, Berhe, Vasko, Pibernik, Ayuso, Medvedev, Keizer, Andersen and Lunder.
The 3rd climb makes casualties in the peloton, mainly rouleurs.
The gap to the break dwindles fast too.
45 km, one circuit and a half to go. The gap is 2’30 to a 158 men peloton led by Zumer, Huby, Julajuj, Barbio and Kuroeda.
Medvedev is the 1st dropped from the break.
There’s an attack in the pack! Van Gils is out and already reached Medvedev. Ahead, the break is in scrambles.
Dall'Oste and Rucigaj attack next. They’re 22 seconds behind Van Gils, now with Benedetti and Andersen, and 2’06 between the head of the race: Keizer, Berhe, Pibernik and Ayuso.
All the attackers are caught ahead of the penultimate climb. There’s still a 44 seconds avance for the 4 leaders. Frankiny and Arndt attack.
Arndt is the only one to get a gap, but that is a small one.
It’s annihilated by Barguil’s acceleration, but then comes a counter attack: Guerreiro, Munoz, Preidler and Ranaweera. I’m not sure the PCT teams are very fond of that.
Bargul has stone legs, so we have Padun and Meintjes leading the favorites in the descent, but Preidler is a better descender, so the gap grows.
Only Simba and Trans don’t have riders in the break or the 36 men favorites’ group.
Preidler, Ranaweera, Munoz and Guerreiro have 36 seconds at the foot of the final climb. 3 km left.
Preidler worked a lot and is immediately swallowed by the peloton.
The three leaders still have 25 seconds under the flamme rouge. But they are hard, and they seem cooked.
Ranaweera remains in the lead in the last 500 m. He’s leaving the 17% slopes now. Van Gils, Preidler and Lunke are out of it.
Ranaweera explodes with 200 m left. Olivier and Munoz find a 2nd wind.
That’ll be between these two.
Olivier wins it on the line! Munoz comes home with a great 2nd.
Meintjes is 3rd, while Ranaweera resists to 4th ahead of Padun and Godoy.
Close one from one another, Schlegel and De Plus follow.
Lopez and Guerreiro close the top 10.
