Clasico San Jose
1.2
2023 | Kristian Haugaard Jensen | Manada Coyote | 2022 | Loic Vliegen | Colombini-Adler Aalterpaint | 2021 | Matthew Holmes | cycleYorkshire |
One of the newer races on the calendar but no less exciting for it. The riders will face more than 200 kilometres of riding on a circuit that traverses through and around the city of San Jose. We have yet to see anybody succeed with a long-range attack, with Loic Vliegen probably being the most active winner so far. Instead we are expecting the peloton to be whittled down into a small group of favourites over the course of the final 30-odd kilometres before things are settled in a select sprint to the line. None of our previous winners are here, so we will be crowning a fourth new champion in four years.
We might as well start with Quinten Hermans, who surprised everybody to take the victory in Gisborne. His closest competition there - Hayden McCormick - is also present. This parcour is much less suitable for this duo than the one we found in Aotearoa. Hermans struggled in the medium mountains at Badaling International and McCormick's solitary previous appearance saw him finishing nearly five minutes down.
Instead I am looking towards the likes of Odd Christian Eiking and Gianni Moscon to do well here. Following on from Gisborne, where his domestique work was very nearly rewarded with a win for the team, he has had some good results Down Under (8th) and in Badaling (17th). By contrast, this will be Odd Christian's debut for his new team, where he will be hoping to forget the disappointments of yesteryear in a race that has twice seen him on the podium.
It also would not do to discount the possibility of Ruben Guerreiro, Sven Erik Bystrom or even one of the assorted Euskotren riders: Quentin Pacher, Luca Wackermann, Victor Lafay... There is a lot of depths in the hills in this year's Continental Tour which makes things difficult to predict. It does, however, mean that we are in for an exciting competition!

Hopefully Beltran can do something today. Looks a bit more like a profile that suits him so fingers crossed he can get a strong result with stiff competition here.
Good luck to everyone!

Think Beltran has one of the best MO/HI combos for this terrain, but the stamina scares me. I picked Guerreiro in the last C2 hill classic, so I might just have to do that again.
Moscon should be the overall favorite though with such strength across the board. Hopefully he gets some priority for Cervelo.

The hill armada is all here in support of Lafay, probably.
We're not against a repeat of last season, or of Gisborne depth wise.
But a top 5 would already be good, I think.

This looks like one for Lyu to strut his stuff. Thanks for the preview lief, and fingers crossed we can follow up on the Gisborne GP with another strong performance in the hilly C2 classics. I agree with you that Hermans will possibly be overmatched here, but hopefully he can hang on for some depth points. And you never know what PCM is going to come up with!

Great report that one with everything that happened from 70km to 5km to go made it easy to keep track of what looked hectic.
Great result for us again Moscon charging late and looking strong and Zico bagging more points as a 50k rider is brilliant |

Awesome result again, and an even better report, thank you lief
Seems the medium mountain rating had a key impact on the result here, which is exactly Lyu's profile. Really pleased with how Hermans and Lyu functioned together (and cool to see Van Lerberghe attacking, bodes well for the upcoming cobbles season). What a cool 1-2 punch to have in the hills
Congrats to Babymetal's manager on the big win!

I really shouldn't be laughing at Moscon and Waeytens screwing each other over so much. Still, they should score enough to get Cervelo promoted.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Still got some Lierse in them to run into the back of each other we hope to have this fixed by the end of the season |

Thanks for the great report, what an exciting read!
Seems like SEB perhaps went a tad too early, but I'd much rather he die trying than watch the race pass him by, and our team's first podium spot is certainly a great reward for his attacking spirit. Very happy with this performance, especially contrasting with the clownshow we've got cooking at Tachira at the moment.

Top 10 for Beltran isn’t bad. Unfortunately just has nothing in the sprint. Rodriguez attacking was nice to see. I’m excited to see him in a stage race that suits him.
Congrats to the winner and thanks for the report!

Anonymous race from us, as expected. Glad to see Guerreiro doing well for himself in his new colours. Congrats on the win to Babymetal!
Beautiful report as well, liefwarrior. Just missed some distance cues to help situate the action. Great pics and lively details though, loved it!

Zero pointer for us, JPL not as effectively as I thought he would be in these type of races. Hopefully that doesn't stop us from promoting at the end of the year.

A bit underwhelming as we had strong forces coming into the final km, and maybe Rodriguez could have help Lafay to a better result.
But I think I said that last season already.
Still a decent result. Congrats to Babymetal though, I like to see you win!
Thank you lifewarriror for a very nice report!

Would have liked to see Nikiema in top 10, but I guess 10 points (with Laas) is decent. Also liked to see De Comarmond in BOTD.
Congrats to Babymetal on the win
