Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 8
Imladrik
We stay in the Rhône Valleyr for a long stage – 241 km from Givors, south of Lyon, to the legendary Mont Ventoux, at the gates of Provence. Though most of the stage isn’t too difficult, the strong part will be the famous climb, which could make the difference in the GC fight. The Conglomerate will have a 2nd occasion to show their collective strength.

Zalgiris and The Conglomerate aren’t interested in a strong break, so ahead of the Côte d’Eyzin-Pinet (cat. 3, 2,7 km, 6,3%), they’re chasing though nobody in the front is really dangerous.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_1.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic wins the mountain sprint. He hadn’t any points beforehand. The peloton seems to have let go, so we’ll see who stays at the front. The polka dots jersey wearer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo has been dropped early in the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_2.png

The break seems to be settled: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Theorpanous, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Delbove, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Martino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Rodriguez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Canal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Dinham, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Healy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Lipowitz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bonello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Vauquelin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Tulett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Wandahl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pinzon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Loland and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro is en chasse-patate, 2 minutes behind.

The next climb is the Côte de Lens-Lestang (cat. 3, 2,6 km, 4,7%).

Rodriguez earns some more points, not enough to challenge the GC favorites, due to the HC climbs points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_3.png

The gap is 5’30 with 190 km left. The Conglomerate and Team Denmark are chasing.

No sprint in Crest, Drôme. The gap is 5’09 with 127 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_4.png

The next categorized climb before the Ventoux is the Côte de Bourdeaux – not to be confused with Bordeaux! – (cat. 3, 4,5 km, 5,4%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_5.png

Selimovic wins 6 more pointless points. The next 77 km aren’t too hard. The gap is 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_6.png

After 140 km of work, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Malmberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Alben are dropped from the peloton.

Here we go for the Ventoux (HC, 19 km, 8,1%). The gap is 7’02. Will the favorites’ teams have the strength to pull the break back? The Conglomerate seems quite alone…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_7.png

The break explodes. Hessman attacks, but he explodes. Selimovic and Lipowitz have a gap on Canal, Dinham, Healy, Pinzon, Rodriguez and Parashchak.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_8.png

10 km left. 13 leaders are back together. Martino attacks. The peloton is at 5’58.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_9.png

Lierse seems to be cooking something in the peloton. Indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis attacks! Will he be able to gap the Conglomerate by 4 minutes to take the yellow jersey? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Van Wilder takes the chase in hand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_10.png

5 km left, the break will be caught, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Evenepoel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Plapp and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Skjelmose Jensen accelerate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_11.png

Skjelmose is in fire! Followed by the two others and Karatsivis, they pull clear by 30 seconds. The Greek doesn’t hold for long though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_12.png

Skjelmose is the one needing to win time, so he attacks with 2,7 km left. Plapp seems cooked.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_13.png

1,5 km left. Evenepoel barely holds on. Plapp already is 45 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_14.png

It’s a big show of strength by Skjelmose! Now let’s see how far back comes Evenepoel to determine who will wear yellow in the MTT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_15.png

Evenepoel loses 38’’, that should allow him to take yellow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_16.png

Tough day for Plapp, 1’19 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_17.png

Galvan Ramirez and Quinn are 4th and 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_18.png

Karatsivis tried, but can’t do better than 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_19.png

Balmer and Ahmad are 7th and 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_20.png

Martino is 9th from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_21.png

Garibian earns a good 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S8/AvenirS7_22.png

Evenepoel indeed takes yellow. Skjelmose is at 26 seconds, Plapp at 37, so tomorrow will remain interesting! One of them should also win the mountain classification.

We can also bet that the Conglomerate will remain the best team.
