Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 4
Imladrik
The 4th stage is the the first which may be important for the GC, and also for the mountain classification (there are 44 points on offer). The riders will crosse the Ardennes, between Bastogne, in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, to Luxembourg-Ville, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Yes, there’s much Luxembourg here.

The day will be long, but the flat finish might be for a reduced sprint. Being caught on the wrong side of a split today might prove catastrophic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_0.png

The first climb, the Côte de Derenbach (cat. 4, 2,3 km, 5,5%) begins 15 km into the race. We’re already in Luxembourg! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers are in the front for now. None of them has mountain points. 24 seconds behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Waerenskjold, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Tulett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Huby (4th, 3 points).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_1.png

Zwift, Lampre and the Conglomerate control the attacks tightly, as this stage might prove trapping. We have seen in particular Colombini, Zalgiris or Crabbe try to join the break. The weather is rainy and windy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo crosses first and earn 5 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_2.png

He wins 5 more at the summit of the Côte de Knaposcheid (cat. 4, 2,9 km, 5%). He now leads the mountain classification, with 10 points. Others in the now settled break are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Tulett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Waerenskjold. The latter has had a hard tile joining, but should manage it in the coming kilometers. The peloton is at 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_3.png

With 186 km left, Lampre, Zwift and Genii lead the peloton.

3/3 for Murillo at the Côte de Wilwerwiltz (cat. 4, 1,6 km, 5,5%). Waerenskjold joined and was dropped as soon as the climb went up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_4.png

The peloton is at 3’20.

Murillo plays it smart to take 6 points at the Côte de Kautenbach (cat. 3, 2,9 km, 6,1%). He now has 21 points, 11 more than Tulett’s 11. Waerenskjold still is en chasse-patate, the peloton at 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_5.png

Pluimers is the strongest at Esch-sur-Sûre (which is a funny name to say in French) (2,8 km, cat. 3, 7,2%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_6.png

At 6 minutes, the peloton has brought back Waerenskjold after 80 km of solo riding. 118 km left today.

Murillo is again in the lead at the summit of the Côte de Goesdorf (cat. 3, 2,5 km, 7,5%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_7.png

The Côte de Bourscheid (cat. 3, 3,4 km, 6,2%), with its castle not seen in the photo, is for Tulett, so the competition stays wide open: Murillo has 33 points, Pluimers and Tulett have 21, with 17 points still on offer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_8.png

Murillo wins the sprint in Diekirch – also the seat of a brewery –, but I’m not sure it was useful o spend energy here. 73 km to go, the gap still is around 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_9.png

Tulett wins the last cat. 4 climb at Côte de Herrenberg (4,1 km, 4,6%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_10.png

The gap is falling fast now, with Zwift, Genii and Conglomerate pushing.

Tulett is the only one to still have the legs tyo fight! He wins the Côte de Reisdorf (cat. 3, 3,2 km, 7%). Tulett is 8 points behind Murllo now, so the Manada rider will wear the polka dots tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_11.png

1st move in the peloton! With 27 km to go and Tulett still one minute ahead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Baroncini attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_12.png

There isn’t a strong reaction in the pack, who counts on its collective force. Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Vermaerke goes out too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_13.png

The trio is caught at the foot of the last climb, the Côte de Bereldange (cat. 3, 1,4 km, 9,7%). But the 11 last kilometers aren’t flat!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_14.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak attacks !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_15.png

He’s brought back by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Strong with 6,8 km to go. The peloton splits in two, but no big name seems to be missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_16.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Stöckli gets a gap in the last hard part of the race. He now has 6 km to hold on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_17.png

3,4 km to go, and Stöckli still has 20 seconds. Only Zwift is at the front, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Kooij and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Evenepoel behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Girmay isn’t too far though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_18.png

It’s over for Stöckli with 1,8 km left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Gloag goes fast, but Zwift doesn’t have anyone close.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_19.png

Forget it : Girmay went to the front and he opens the sprint at the flamme rouge !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_20.png

600 m. Nobody can really match him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_21.png

It’s another win for Girmay ! What a race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_22.png

Govekar adds another 2nd place, M. van Dijke is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_23.png

Quinn is 4th, ahead of Plapp and Willhelm.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/AvenirS4_24.png

Ahmad, Evenepoel, Kooij and Skjelmose close the top 10.

In the GC, Govekar climbs up to 3rd behind Girmay and Evenepoel.

Final sprint day tomorrow !
