Stage 5 Report

The Herald Sun Tour wraps up with another sprint stage. This one goes 166k and the riders can celebrate properly at the finish because they will be at a winery. Two Cat 4s mean the KOM jersey could be in play. Also, two sprint points, which theoretically could impact the GC, but probably won’t.

The stage favorites are the sprinters, the organizers still like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik although he has yet to show himself in all the prior sprints:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/favs.jpg

About 18k gone. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Owen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Toumire, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert have 1’37 over the peloton. More riders have been trying to join them but the team of GC leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Malori, JEWA-TIROL, have been shutting them down. This trio is good news for KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png McGill because none of them have enough points to overhaul him in the KOM competition even, if they score maximum on this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/01.jpg

8k to the first KOM sprint, 108k in the stage. The lead is just 2’35. JEWA-TIROL keeping it under control, maybe because Toumire is only 2’33 down on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/02.jpg

Toumire takes KOM sprint. The next one is in 7k.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/03.jpg

Lampaert takes the 2nd one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png McGill officially wins the KOM competition. It has been a good race for lesser-known Americans, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Welch doing well in the TT. The lead has grown to 3’45 on the climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/04.jpg

Owen outsprints Toumire at the first sprint point. The lead is 4’24 with 70k go to. Still JEWA-TIROL doing all the work with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Kabas on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/05.jpg

40k to go the sprint teams have begun to take things seriously and have the lead down to 2’36. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png English, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Rathe, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Johanson on the front right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/06.jpg

Owen takes out the 2nd sprint but the peloton just 36 seconds down with 12k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/07.jpg

The catch is made at the 5k banner, all 139 riders together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/08.jpg

1.8k, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Altanzul pulls pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins a few lengths clear. This doesn’t seem like such a text book lead out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/09.jpg

Liepins hesitates briefly and then opens up the sprint under the 1k banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott the next 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/10.jpg

400 meters. Minali fading. Major just ahead of Liepins. Scott next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Selig on Scott’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/11.jpg

200 meters. Crabbe did not get the leadout right this time, Liepins dying now. Major in the lead Scott, Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Colbrelli also close.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major wins stage 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott 2nd, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Selig.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully comes through for 5th. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero, who faded badly in the last 200 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Andersson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser are 9th and 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/HeraldSun/S5/14.jpg

Despite a poor last stage pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins easily wins the points competition with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully passing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali for 2nd.

The other jerseys stay where they were at the beginning of the day as well with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Malori winning the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer the U25 and SEE Turtles the team’s competition.
