Tour of America - Stage 17
Imladrik
We are back West – I mean, west of the northern East Coast, for a mountain time trial up to mount Equinox, Vermont. The place is usually reserved for cars races, and we can suppose our riders will be climbing more than four minutes! Also, nearby Little Equinox was one of the first wind farm of the United States.

Cycling wise, we’re back in the GC fight. The cat. 1 climb to Mount Equinox opens an intense 4 days finish to the GC victory in Montreal.
Though the stage is 15 km long, there are “only” 7 km of climbing (at 11,4%), so the good climbers will have to limit their losses on the flat first half of the stage.

It remains to be seen wether someone can overcome pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Eastman on such a stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S17/ToAS17_18.png

If pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty isn’t able to challenge his compatriot today, the battle for the podium spots and the top 5 will still be intense!

Riders 149 to 51

2h42 late on Eastman in the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Frame opens the day. He’s been working a lot at the front of the pack for his sprint leader Reinhardt.
This bunch features mainly rouleurs and youngsters, and they all suffer in the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Oram seems in a good shape, though, as he overcomes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Quaade.
But he’s himself beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Hopkins, who sets a best time of 39’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Intxausti is a decent climber, and he’s the next to take the hot seat with a notable time: 36’19. He might rest here for quite some time. That is, until he’s disloged by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png De Luna, who’s under 36 minutes: 35’27. But then again, as we see mountain domestiques on the road, that’ll maybe not hold long.

Indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mager is the following rider on,n the seat: 35’16. He’s soon enough beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paulus, and a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Jacobsen: 34’36.

Though local man pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mannion is one of the best climber of the bunch, he’s not that good of the flat, and might be tiring after all this time. He falls 8 seconds short of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Burke, who gets a time of 34’31.

This lot has finished, let’s have a look at the standings!

Riders 50 to 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S17/ToAS17_22.png

Some riders of this bunch will try to gain minor placing, or even to crack into the top 10! This shouldn’t be the hope of either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Koshevoy or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Mendoza, as none of them really is suited to the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn sets a new best time of 34’21, soon beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Fabbro, who’s the first under 34 minutes: 33’35.

One might have seen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri as one of these well rounded riders able to do good today – awaiting the favorites, obviously – but he might have worked too much for his leader. We can also change our shift in the young rider competition, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Gall is in difficulties: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Verschaeve was better than him on the flat, and is now closing in in the climb.

They end up 1 minute appart. Fabbro still holds the best time and could gain much today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S17/ToAS17_23.png

All the top 10 is on the road! Let’s have a look at the standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S17/ToAS17_24.png

Riders 10 to 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S17/ToAS17_25.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Rachid is the first to go of the bunch, and he finishes 7 seconds off Fabbro, which might be a tad disappointing.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty is leading the stage after the flat section, with 11 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Powless and 19 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Eastman, 21 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera, but the latter is suffering in the climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Madrazo had a strong day to disloge Fabbro of the hot seat. His time is 33’34. Not enough to overcome pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Ludvigsson in the GC, as the Swede only lose 30 seconds. Reis and Ranaweera finsih together. The former sets the new best time (32’23), while the latter loses 1’25. His 5th place is not endangered, though.

In the last kilometers, all three Americans are holding their ground. One could think, at least: Powless loses 1’25 to Reis, which will give the podium to the Portuguese. McNulty is 32’’ off, which shows the performance of the Colombini man.

But Eastman is determined to deprive Colombini of a stage win! He wins by for 1 second, adding another success for Glanbia and showing why he’s the favorite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S17/ToAS17_26.png

Reis and Powless swap places in the GC. McNulty still has 3’20 on the 3rd, so he should be able to hold onto that. The race for 3rd is more open, with only 1’30 between Reis and Ranaweera.
Same thought for Gall, despite a disappointing stage. McNulty has been out of reach for a long time, but the battle with Verschaeve will be interesting. Now to see what the Austrian wants more, between this and the mountain classification.
Zwift, Colombini and Kraftwerk still lead the team classification.

Last mountain day tomorrow, a brutal one which could end the hopes of anybody not feeling well.
