Here comes the first mountain stage of the race, and it’s a brutal one: 243 km between Rio Cuarto and the Sierras Comechingone. We’ll stay in the province of Cordoba and pass trhough the city of Achiras, where the riders will have the possibility to admire yet another equestrian statue.
Who says mountains says that Eastman is the favorite, as he’s the best climber here. He’ll have the opportunity to already take the yellow jersey. On this road, he’ll have to be better than McNulty and Reis, the former having a strong advantage thanks to his great time-trial.
Powless’ goal has to be to hang on with the favorites to keep his slight margin.
A break of 6 seems to be all that Zwift and McCormick will let go today. Arias Villanueva, Marte, Orosco, Sakalou, Hopkins and Wandahl are out of the peloton. None of them should endanger the favorites for the stage win.
Right after I said that, a group of 5 managed to get a gap: Della Lunga, De Luna, Chumil, Bablidze and Yamada.
There’s a battle for the sprint in Achiras! Chumil wins it. The gap is 6’49 with 173 km left.
It’s the same story in La Punilla, 10 km later.
The head of the race then begins the climb to Villa Larca (cat. 4, 5,3 km, 2,8%), in the province of San Luis, after they passed south of the mountain. They have a gap of 2’29 to the peloton, where Zwift and McCormick still are pacing.
Della Lunga wins the 5 points. Marte gets none, but he stays in the provisional lead. Until the end of the stage, that is.
And soon enough, the finale begins! The leaders have a gap pf 1’27 in the first slopes of the Sierras Cunechigones (HC, 16 km, 7,3%).
The finish line is above 2000 m!
Bablidze, Orosco, Sakalou and Chumil still have 20 seconds on a pack lead by Revard at the 10 km mark, but the slopes are above 10% now and the peloton is leaking, already reduced to 133 riders.
And 1 km later, Warbasse leads the peloton through the remnants of the break.
6,8 km left, the peloton is reduced to 61 under the fast pace of Petelin and Raileanu. Close to the front are Fabbro, Madrazo and Inkelaar. Gall, Alarcon and Jaramillo are the main names dropped.
4 km left and the group of favorites is reduced to 35. McNulty uses Kuss’ relay to attack. Eastman and Rachid are those the closest to him.
A group of 4 manages to make the difference: McNulty, Eastman, Inkelaar and Madrazo. Reis and Powless lead the counter offensive. Ablenado has been dropped.
With 2 km remaining to climb, McNulty gives up and should be brought back by Reis and Powless. In their wheel, Ranaweera is struggling. Inkelaar and Madrazo are already behind.
Eastman still holds by 16 seconds under the kyte. Behind, Reis is the one seeming in the best shape.
You can’t call this easy on such a stage, but Eastman takes the sixth stage of the 2023 Tour of America, without ever seeming in danger.
Reis comes in second, 20 seconds later.
McNulty is 3rd and loses 50 seconds (not counting the bonus seconds). Eastman will take the GC lead.
Powless holds on enough to be 4th, but he loses 1 minute.
Ranaweera follows, 20 more seconds later.
It’s a decent 6th place for Madrazo, who had followed the initial attack but wasn’t able to hold on.
Decent positions also for Inkelaar and Munoz.
Schleck comes home 9th, ahead of Lemus Davila.
Eastman takes the GC lead, with already more than 30 seconds on McNulty and Reis. After Powless, who’s 4th, everyvody is already more than 2 minutes behind the American, who also leads the best climber classification with a 6 points advantage to McNulty and Reis.
The former has a clear advantage on the young rider classification, and it’s hard to imagine anybody robbing him of it.
Kraftwerk leads the team classification, with 21 seconds on Colombino and 1 minute on McCormick.
Flat stage tomorrow, with plenty of possible outcomes! See you there.
