Stage 4 our of the Tour of America is the first GC stage. It’s a long individual time trial in the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires. Here you can find one of the most beautiful bookshop of the world. And it’s a big one. Maybe the riders will take the time to find a book here, after their ride?
The day’s favorites are a mix of time-trial specialists ( Daniel, Eaton) and GC riders ( Powless, McNulty, Eastman). Powless will want to take a headstart in the GC battle, as well as a stage win to his team in their fight against relegation.
The 3rd from last GC rider, and 3rd to go, is Mathis. He should set a good reference time.
Indeeed, he does better in the two intermediate chrono than the Hungarian National Champion Sipos and finishes in 56’57. Sipos is 14 seconds off (57’11 ).
Downey was fastest on the 1st part of the stage, but he loses 8 seconds in the second part. His teammate Cheyne, the Canadian champion, is 7 seconds off Hamza in the first part.
20 riders have finished, so we can have a first look at the standings!
Downey finishes in 57’00 , 3 seconds off Mathis. Cheyne is 12 seconds off. But that’s not that important, as Hamza takes the hot seat: 56’40 . An excellent time for the not so slow turtle!
Another Glanbia rider defy him, in O'Loughlin. 3 seconds slowers after the 2nd chrono, he finishes in 56’45 , which is good enough for a provisional 2nd.
30 more riders have finished, let’s have another look at the standings.
Tesfom doesn’t have the legs today: he was 8 seconds behind at the first intermediate chrono. Meanwhile, Gall loses time in the young rider battle, 2’50 at the 2nd chrono.
Tesfom finishes 25 seconds behind Hamza.
Eaton doesn’t do much better, as he’s already ost 5 seconds at the first chrono. Same story for the Danish champion, Quaade.
Keizer is looking to fare as well as them.
Maybe it’s the fact he rides in his home race – though we’re still fare from the US, but Mostov seems to be in a good day! He finishes the first part of the stage only 2’’ slower than Hamza, in the same time as his teammate and favorite Daniel.
100 riders have finished already!
The 2nd part of the stage is hard for some riders: when Daniel takes the lead, Mostov loses 5 seconds and Oram 3 seconds. We’re waiting for the favorites now…
Keizer finishes well, 14 seconds behind Hamza and Daniel. Oram is 9 seconds off, Mostov 18 seconds. The first GC rider, Ranaweera, might be disappointed: he loses 44 seconds to Hamza!
Reis manages to limit his losses to 15 seconds (for now), good enough for a temporary 10th.
Eastman doesn’t really fare better: 56’58 , +18 seconds.
It’s not the case for Powless, who leaves up to his favorite’s statuts. His final time is 56’31 , 9 seconds better than Hamza and Oram. That should secure him the yellow jersey tonight.
McNulty loses 8 seconds. That’ll give him the 2nd place of the day and the young rider jersey. It’s also a good start against the better climbers.
The last to go, Marte, probably exceeded his manager’s dreams already, and he can enjoy his ride in yellow.
As expected, the stage podium is the new GC podium. McNulty and Powless are tied, due to the result of the former on the second stage.
Eastman is 28 seconds behind, Reis 35 seconds and Ranaweera nearly 1 minute.
Reinhard keeps the green jersey, and Marle the polka dots.
McNulty now has a clear lead in the young rider classification. Gall has 3 minutes to take back to the 2nd place.
McCormick, Glanbia and Kraftwerk are the obvious trio leading the team classification.
Tomorrow is another flat stage. Strong sprint incoming!
