Tour of America - Stage 3
Imladrik
We stay in Urugay for this 3rd stage of the Tour of America. Our route will bring us from Soca, named from a famous 19th century Doctor, to Rosario, very close to the Argentinian border, where we’ll ride tomorrow.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/Monumento_a_Artigas_en_Plaza_P%C3%BAblica_de_la_ciudad_de_Soca_-_panoramio.jpg/800px-Monumento_a_Artigas_en_Plaza_P%C3%BAblica_de_la_ciudad_de_Soca_-_panoramio.jpg

The stage will be harder than the first flat stage, with two cat. 4 climbs, and around 190 km of racing. The last climb is 10 km from the finish line, and could be the place to attack for any team wanting to disturb the sprinters’ plans. But for now, the favorites are the usual suspects, in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff.

Some well known names go for the break with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Marte (1st in the young rider classification, 4th in the best climber classification with 3 points, 2nd in the points classification), in green on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt’s behalf, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Della Lunga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Johnson, Yamada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Loland (wearing white on Marte’s behalf) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Hopkins. So that’s only three teams in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_14.png

Adodas takes control of the peloton, and while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Hopkins tried to join his namesake in the break, the sprinters’ teams decided 6 was enough for a flat stage.

Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Hopkins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Yamada are interested in the points in Cruce. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Della Lunga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Marte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Johnson is the order behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_15.png

The gazp is 3’21 with 161 km left.

The next difficulty is on the camino del paso de Andaluz (cat. 4, 1,4 km, 1,9%). We’re north of Montevideo.
This mountain sprint is more a sprint than a mountain. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Hopkins earns 5 points, but there are none for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Marte.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_20.png

The gap is up to 6’22 with 147 km left.

Marle finds his legs back for the sprint in Ciudad de Plata, back on the seaside. Hopkins comes in 2nd, which makes it a good sprint for T3A.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_21.png

Tje gap is down to 4’40 with 106 km left. Adidas and Kraftwerk paces the peloton.

Many kilometers laters, , with the peloton closing in, Marte, Della Lunga and Johnson get a few maters on their companions. Marle could get the KoM lead if he survive to the mountain sprint!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_22.png

This one is not much more of a climb: cat. 4, 1,4 km, 1,2%. Marte manages to get the 5 points and the lead in the classification. The gap is around 30 seconds with 11 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_23.png

Air New Zealand makes the catch with 8,5 km left. All sprinters are bunched behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_24.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff launches the sprint ahead of the red kyte. Behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Walls, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_25.png

Walls and Zariff crumble after a few hundred meters. Haller, Reinhardt and Sanikwathi are now in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_26.png

300 m. Reinhard doesn’t have the legs today, and he fades quickly. Haller still is leading the bunch and stays one of the fastest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_27.png

But he’s beaten in the last meters! Wippert takes the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_16.png

Tivani and Petit complete the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_17.png

Perera is 4th, Haller 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_18.png

El Sabbahi, Dzervus, Sanikwathi, Van Stayen and Guardini complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/ToA/S3/ToAS3_19.png

Surprise when the calculation are done by the officials, as it’s Barte who takes the GC lead, after a third day in the break, ahead of the sprinters. He also leads the best climber and the young rider classification. Reinhard manages to keep the green.

It’s a long TT and a new country tomorrow! First day for the GC fight!
