Lopez is a strong hybrid and a big favorite today in Basque country. Behind him, the organization seems to favour the strongest puncheurs and hybrids.
A decent size break gets 1’30 of advance with 10 km done: Ahmad, Lauk, Rodriguez, Canal, Christensen, Aquilani, Selimovic, Stojnic and Healy.
Not much hope for this break. Under the pouring rain, Antonijevic, the two Bergstrom Frisk, Cemazar and Montenegro take up chasing duties.
Nothing much happens until the foot of the Azkarate (4,7 km, 7,4%). Lopez punctured but was well positioned and did not lose ground. The gap is 4’40 with 153 km left.
Minions, Puma, EA Vesuvio and cycleYorkshire are the teams working at the head of the pack.
Jussaume is the first to be dropped with 110 km left. The gap is at 4’24 wotj the nreal approaching the Alkira (4 km, 6,2%).
The road after that is quite bumpy, and many riders are struggling. Nobody of note, though. The gap is down to 2’37.
63 km left, and the gap is 1’51 as the break begins the Jaizkibel, antepenultimate climb of the day (7,5 km, 5,8%).
Healy is the first dropped from the break.
A peloton of 158 trails the break by 1’18. Christensen attacks in the Erlaitz (7,2 km, 6,8%).
But there’s an attack in the a pack! Borges, Schmid and Lopez try to gfet clear in the 9% slopes. Januskevicius is well placed to block followers.
The three easily overcome the break and are 30 seconds behind Christensen. Kinoshita and Eastman lead the chase.
A peloton of 133 is back together soon after. Kinoshita insists and gets clear. Lopez chases.
They’re brought back on the summit by a group of 41. Kirsch, Errazkin, Gebrezgabihier and McCarthy are the main names not here.
Near the 20 km mark, Schmid is on the move.
There have been other attacks, but to no avail, and a group of 50 is together at the foot of the Murgil Tontorra (2,6 km, 9,2%). After that, it’s all downhill to a flat finish.
Gebrezgabihier and McCarthy aren’t here, while Eastman and Shikai aren’t well positioned.
Attacks begin right at the first slopes! De Plus, Arndt, Madouas, Valter, Lopez, Schmid, Yates and Kinoshita are 30 seconds away with 6,6 km left.
Borges and Kelderman make the jump. Arndt takes the lead near the summit.
He still leads by 25 seconds at the 5 km mark, but is not quite the best descender.
3 km left and Arndt still has 30 seconds on a group of 17 lead by Kinoshita. Nobody seems to want to take the chase in his hand.
Arndt is in the clear with 1,3 km left. That could be a huge win for DuckDuckGo!
There’s nobody to take him back!
Arndt wins the 2023 Classica San Sebastian!
Behind him, Kinoshita, Schmid, Valter and Yates lead the sprint.
Maybe as big as Arndt victory is Schmid’s second place! What a steal for the PCT teams.
Kinoshita still gets a satisfying 3rd.
Valter is 4th.
Yates was the best sprinter of the group, but he was too tired and is only 5th.
Then come Madouas, Kelderman, Gesbert and Lopez.
De Plus close the top 10 ahead of Borges.
That’s all here in San Sebastian. Everybody should come back home, and let’s hope for the riders that a hot shower awaits them after a long day under the rain.
