Paris Tours
233.9km
C1
A combination of PCT and CT teams will face a long day in the French countryside here at Paris Tours. We commonly end in a sprint for this classic and we’ll focus on the fast men for our preview. However, sometimes, a sole leader will make it to the end, like Morgan Kneisky did for Repsol – Honda in 2017. It’ll be a packed startlist of 24 teams, so that should increase the likelihood this comes down to a sprint. A reasonably even split of 14 PCT and 10 CT makes up the field.
History
2022 | Fernando Gaviria | 2021 | John Degenkolb | 2020 | Soren Kragh Andersen | 2019 | Michael Van Stayen | 2018 | Leonid Krasnov | 2017 | Morgan Kneisky | 2016 | Sebastian Langeveld | 2015 | Dylan Groenewegen | 2014 | Danilo Napolitano | 2013 | Dmitri Kozontchuk | 2012 | Daniele Bennati | 2011 | Roger Kluge | 2010 | Aleksi Markov | 2009 | Ruben Bongiorno | 2008 | Tom Boonen | 2007 | Riccardo Ricco |
What a list of winners and no one shows up on the list twice! As mentioned early, Kneisky is the only one of those champions to take the crown solo.
We do have two a former champion on the start line and they are Dylan Groenewegen who won the race back in 2015 and John Degenkolb the 2021 champ, but they’re the only ones with that opportunity. The 2023 change from PTHC race to 2022 is the major factor in keeping some of our most recent winners off the start.
Sprinters
There’s no denying that this should be a race for the sprinters, so let’s look at who has the best shot!
Name | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | FG | Dylan Groenewegen | 73 | 74 | 71 | 82 | 81 | 59 | Alberto Dainese | 76 | 75 | 76 | 81 | 82 | 64 | Mohamad Izzat Hilmi Abdul Halil | 70 | 71 | 68 | 81 | 79 | 60 | Rick Zabel | 74 | 74 | 70 | 81 | 79 | 66 | John Degenkolb | 73 | 68 | 66 | 81 | 76 | 67 | Matti Manninen | 74 | 71 | 75 | 81 | 80 | 70 | Kristoffer Halvorsen | 76 | 74 | 71 | 81 | 80 | 70 | Ivano Lo Cicero | 68 | 65 | 57 | 80 | 72 | 50 | Niccolo Bonifazio | 79 | 68 | 75 | 80 | 80 | 58 | Stanislaw Aniolkowski | 76 | 76 | 74 | 80 | 79 | 57 | Leigh Howard | 74 | 72 | 67 | 80 | 76 | 62 | Aliaksandr Riabushenko | 76 | 71 | 74 | 79 | 77 | 66 | Oscar Guerao | 70 | 65 | 58 | 79 | 70 | 67 | Thomas Boudat | 73 | 71 | 74 | 79 | 78 | 62 | Christian Bertilsson | 73 | 72 | 71 | 79 | 77 | 61 | Ingus Eislers | 76 | 72 | 73 | 79 | 73 | 61 | Ryan Gibbons | 75 | 73 | 72 | 78 | 78 | 65 | Emils Liepins | 73 | 73 | 68 | 78 | 79 | 58 | Michael Matthews | 75 | 70 | 65 | 78 | 77 | 64 | Michael Vingerling | 70 | 71 | 65 | 78 | 78 | 56 | Luke Rowe | 77 | 74 | 68 | 78 | 78 | 74 | Gabriel Marin | 74 | 73 | 73 | 78 | 78 | 63 | Cameron Scott | 72 | 72 | 71 | 78 | 78 | 60 | Tim Merlier | 73 | 72 | 72 | 78 | 74 | 63 | Syver Waersted | 73 | 69 | 78 | 78 | 79 | 71 |
In addition to being a winner, Groenewegen leads the start list of favorites as the best sprinter in the group. He will require being brought to the line in the bunch sprint, since he’s so unlikely to jump away, but so are all of the sprinters. Groenewegen comes with two fantastic lead-out men in Vingerling and Matthews. Either one could be the last man and Groenewegen will still have the best leadout in the field. That also means that Fastned will be forced to pace at least some of the day which is never ideal in a 230km race.
Degenkolb probably falls a bit lower on the startlist this year, even as the 2nd winner. He’ll have a strong teammate in Boudat, who might even sprint for the final instead of him. Given the length of race, Boudat should actually be stronger come the end. Still Degenkolb can remain amidst the best on his top days.
Dainese should be the second favorite and the only other favorite who has a 2nd top sprinter as their leadout. Gibbons is here to support in the final man duties and should be able to match the train of Fastned once its down to the final two. For a long race, Dainese’s strength in resistance may also benefit him as he fights in the final 20km.
As we’ve seen all season, sprint races depend on positioning and timing. The remainder of our major sprinters will be focusing on finding their way through the final stages without a significant train. Manninen seems well positioned to handle being on his own as Bonifazio. Halvorsen should be the other man left in the top 5 discussion.
Spark – BNZ does have a predicament in this race as well, with Scott here to lead out Howard we presume. Depending on how late the sprint goes, Howard should actually give way to Scott who might be able to jump out of someone’s draft. However, if Scott can push the pace and be the best leadout man of the bunch, Howard might be able to find a top 5 position. Otherwise, he might disappoint compared to positioning on the rankings.
In a sprint field, there’s never anyone out of range as long as they find the final sprint in top 10 positioning. Too many names to go through all their stories, but Abdul Halil, Zabel, and Aniolkowski will all be looking for huge successes here, too.
Fighters
Name | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | FG | Alain Quispe | 80 | 62 | 60 | 66 | 73 | 84 | Taco Van der Hoorn | 75 | 76 | 69 | 56 | 66 | 84 | Peter Varga | 77 | 76 | 73 | 65 | 80 | 83 | Sameera Chatarunga | 72 | 79 | 72 | 70 | 68 | 80 | Jan Dieteren | 67 | 75 | 70 | 63 | 66 | 80 | Torkil Veyhe | 80 | 66 | 71 | 56 | 78 | 80 | Jasper Bovenhuis | 73 | 74 | 70 | 62 | 68 | 79 | Mark Dzamastagic | 78 | 76 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 78 | Bernard Van Aert | 71 | 70 | 71 | 71 | 72 | 78 | Yudai Arashiro | 81 | 71 | 67 | 70 | 75 | 78 | Henok Tesfaye Heyi | 75 | 74 | 76 | 68 | 73 | 78 | Alexis Gougeard | 73 | 72 | 76 | 64 | 65 | 78 |
Although uncommon, there’s always a chance that these riders could try to make the difference in the final results. Quispe is a master of the flat and is likely to find an attack at somepoint in the day. Verhe is the other rider we expect to attempt an early breakaway from past experience.
Varga is also well positioned for this as is Van Der Hoorn. The scary part for all four of the already mentioned is that they have a major sprint contender as well. This might limit the attacks this time around, but we’re sure they’ll be a surprise name somewhere.

Look Howard should be outright leader here. Scott hopefully will bring a strong lead out for him. We have a strong sprint squad here and should actually be able to lead out well.
I want a top 5 from this race and to me that’s easily possible. Should be a good race!

The only flat classic we're in where Vesely is not there. Hoping that the flat squad can spring a surprise and/or collect some depth points.
Thanks for the preview sean

Top-5 is our minimum goal, let's see if we can achieve it. In case Quispe doesn't win I guess Manninen can try to sprint.
Good luck to all, and thank you for the preview, sean!

Not much hope for anything. On a such a long race, we can't see the break winning again, and then it's also probably too long for Guerao to have anything left to sprint.
Still, he has all our youngsters with him, that's what is important.
Good luck to the sprinters' teams!

Hoping for a rebound after a very weak showing in Philadelphia. Not a lot of races left for Dainese, so we need to make the most of every opportunity. Looking forward to the report!

Dzama and Rowe know what they need to do, whether or not they'll be able to do that in this field is a different question. The two sharp hills right before the finish line is where I expect the attacks to be placed. Thanks for the preview!

We have nothing to hope for apart from a day in the break and maybe someone snatching a point. Good luck to the sprinter teams, maybe we should get us one too next season

Big expectations for Abdul Halil here. Such a stacked startlist, would be overjoyed if he could manage a top-10. It looks like we won’t be good enough for a lead out thankfully, so hopefully he can find the right wheel towards the end.
Thanks for the preview!

Another chance for Liepins to race as our leader. His results in Hanko (4th) and Frankfurt (10th) were far above expectations. Maybe he can surprise again.
Thanks for the preview and good luck everybody!

Love to see the preview having more faith in a domestique than Houle - but I guess being a local gives the home road advantage Hope between those two and Jams we can pull out some points!

Not an awful performance by us between Houle and Jams basically doing the equivalent of 10th, but would have hoped for more. Wonder what kind of results Houle could be getting if he didn't get briefly dropped every single race.

Deadset sprints are a suffering to follow. If I had one of the big guns I would be close to having a brain implosion this season, it’s such bullshit. Swings and roundabouts I guess. Congrats Ollfardh and thanks Sean for the report.

Don't understand why no one tries to get into breaks or to attack late even when we don't have any contenders. Others seem to get guys who do one of the two at least. It's been mostly this way forever now. Must be my recruitment
Didn't expect much, and got even less. Onto the next one I guess.
Congrats to Ollfardh and thanks for the report sean!
