Criterium du Dauphine Libere
PTHC
7 Stages

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_dauphine.jpg

The PTHC calendar enters France while many teams also race in Switzerland (Tour de Suisse) and Germany (Frankfurt-Eschborn). It’s a packed startlist with 23 teams slated to tackle the French circuit.

Stage 1: This parcours begins with a relatively flat 6.6km prologue while will allow for some GC gaps to start the race. There is a slight incline in the 2nd half of the prologue

Stage 2: A 176.7 flat stage, this should absolutely be for the sprinters. A great prologue/sprint rider could take over the GC lead with bonus seconds if all goes right.

Stage 3: Officially a hilly stage, this is for the hybrid climbers. 195.4km of undulating terrain all day will take stamina, punch, and acceleration. A final climb of approximately 10km with a relatively flat final few kilometers should give us a legitimate GC selection, but not blow up the race.

Stage 4: A 228.8km flat stage with a steep climb about 70km to go. This should either be one for the breakaway or the sprinters. Our bet is on no major drops from the climb, but there’s always possibilities to try.

Stage 5: A true mountain stage – 159.8kkm. The final 3 climbs are the most challenging and most important. The 3rd to last presents a shallow and short descent which won’t allow much recovery. The penultimate is the hardest of the day, but anyone who gets over that climb together should be able to challenge on the final uphill. The biggest gaps should come here.

Stage 6: A bumpier version of stage 3, Stage 6 sees 182.8km of up and down as there’s almost not a single flat kilometer in the stage. This could be another one for the breakaway, especially as the KOM should have major points on offer here. The final climb will benefit the punchiest riders left with a final 2-3km kicker.

Stage 7: The queen stage, 153.0km up to Mont Blanc. Significant climbs start as early as 30km into the stage and the climbs are difficult. Mont Blanc is steep and about 11km long. There will already be GC gaps, so riders will absolutely be trying to make up for any lost time, while others may be struggling to hold on at the end of a very challenging stage race.

History

Winners:
5 time: Taylor Phinney (2021, 2020, 2018, 2016, 2013)
2 time: Thomas Dekker (2017, 2007); Rein Taaramae (2015, 2014); Simon Spilak (2012, 2011); John Gadret (2010, 2009)
1 time: Justin Tenorio(2022) Romain Sicard (2019) David Moncoutie (2008),

This race has had more multiple-time winners than single winners, but there isn’t a single returning champion on the startlist. Guess that means the 1st-time winner list will grow this year!

Aular is our highest returning finisher after finishing 6th last season.

Morton enters this race two steps above the rest when it comes to the high mountains. He’s well positioned to take the victory here but simply riding everyone off his wheel on the mountaintop finishes.

Areruya is going to get our 2nd place prediction has the two hillier days might suit him best of any of the favorites. Those extra bonus seconds should make-up for anything he loses to the rest of the group assuming he doesn’t blow up on stage 5 or 7.

Latour will earn the 3rd place prediction based on his inability to tire. He’s strong all the way to the end of stages and should put themselves in good position after the MTT. Choi and Pogacar should also expect to start with a bit of advantage over all but Morton.

Faglum Karlsson might try to sneak into the top spots in the early stages if they aren’t the most decisive. The MTT doesn’t look to have much flat, but anything that isn’t straight uphill should give the Assa Abloy rider a bit of an advantage.
The rest of this group should all be disappointed if they don’t get a top 10 GC or a top 10 on any of the individual mountain stages. Obviously, some will have to miss out, but all of them should be aiming that direction.

These riders should be the favorites for stages 3, 5, 6 and 7, even though the hill markers may say otherwise for 3 and 6.

While the GC riders should be the favorites for stages 3 and 6, there are a few riders who just might make it over the main climbs and find their way with a shot at those stages.

Kwiatkowski is the most likely stage winner in these scenarios with his ability to get over multiple climbs, although he may be asked to rider in support of Sagan. Both Binance riders should be aiming at stage wins – hopefully they don’t get in each other’s way.

Sosa is the other major contender from this group, as a very balance climber/punchier, but we’ll see what sort of prioritization he’s given.

David pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Dekker756576697574

This is… not the strong sprint field that we’ll see this year, but there will be an exciting battle between the best.

Aniolkowski is clearly the strongest sprinter, but with Padun on the squad, who knows how much Team Pop4Ever p/b Morshynska will want to chase on the two flat stages.

Petit is another strong option, but he’s not the most explosive of the bunch.
Rajovic might actually be the biggest favorite if everyone decides to take things slow and leave it to a late sprint. Contreras will be thinking the same thing.

Bennett and Van der Kooij should also be coming here with hopes to gain at least 1 top 5 finish.

The lack of sprinters here could mean a lot when it comes to who will chase the breakaways, especially on stage 4. 228.8k is a lot to keep a strong break in check, so it might be worth placing a rider in the break for each of these strong sprinter teams with the hopes of landing the duties on the shoulders of GC contenders.

Big race for us. Galta's last stage race of the season. He was doing so well until the last few days of the Giro. Have to hope the game engine still likes him and he can redeem himself a little bit. A top 5 would go a long way for that. Things will be complicated a bit by the presence of Aranburu. With the hilly/medium mountain stages I felt like he'd be good here, and the lack of a real TT means even a relatively high GC is possible. But that depends on how he interacts with Galta. My hope is that Gregaard is the main protector and Aranburu has some freedom, but PCM is rarely so strategic.

Thanks for the preview!

You know it's a weak sprint field if Sam Bennett gets a mention ...let's hope he merits it.

Otherwise Glanbia will be looking at the prologue with Seán Downey.

Thanks Sean Coll , good luck all

No idea how the hilly stages play out, if it's not selective at all overhauling Padun could be tricky, but really we should be wanting 2nd and a stage or two at a minimum. I'm going to just stop posting every race about how we need to overperform everywhere to promote and secure our future because it's going so terribly - however I will say we do have a Win Goal here as well so it'd be nice for that reason too if we can somehow bring down Morton Pfft
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Similar expectations as in East Java after seeing the startlist. Top 5 would be great but 6th or 7th looks more likely. Hoping for Choi to remain consistent as always. This is a Top 10 goal and that is the minimum requirement!

Thanks for the preview Sean!

Maybe Pogi has a chance to sneak into the top 5, hopefully he can best a couple of 81 climbers. Also could be a nice race for Rajovic, I could use every extra point we get.

Between this and Suisse we have two important races to put some points on the board. Thanks for the preview Smile

Thanks for the great preview, sean! Goal for Aular should be top-8. Dream goal top-5 I guess. And hopefully a decent result by Sütterlin in the prologue Smile

Looking forward to see how the climbers vs. puncheurs battle plays out! I think Les Gets doesn't look hard enough (despite the length) to make a real difference, so it might be only Mont Blanc that's really too tough for the likes of Kwiatkowski or Aranburu. With all these short uphill finishes, I wonder what Areruya can actually do - losing some time to Morton on the first and last days is very likely, but otherwise?
In general, PCT teams have some pretty punchy climbers - Padun, Arndt, Min, Schlegel - looking forward to see if they can do better than expected here!

Only thing I'm missing in the preview is the list of favourites for the prologue. Maybe it's just so that Schomber doesn't need to be mentioned Pfft
Faglum Karlsson should be among the stage win favourites as well - who knows what he'll be capable of if he gets yellow on the first days...

Thanks for the preview, and good luck to all participants!

Solid start with Howson's 4th place in the prologue and Pogi only behind Karlsson amongst the climbers. Now to see if we can getting something from the sprints.

That was a very good Prologue for us I think - Jungels Top 9, Ocampo 2nd in the U25s and Choi behind only Faglum Karlsson and Pogacar in terms of the GC contenders. Can't complain.

Congrats to Bikex and thanks for the report sean Smile

Thanks for the report, sean! Congratulations to Bikex.

Hoped for Sütterlin to do a bit better, but I guess he's allowed to perform a little bit less than that after his great TT in Bongo recently. Aular losing max 20 seconds to other climbers, so can't complain about that.

Banana DULE WINS!!! Banana

Really happy that I got lucky with a manageable sprinting startlist and Rajovic took full advantage. We helped with the chasing duties, so a deserved win in my book Smile

Only downside is our depth pieces lost time, so we are probably relying just on Pogi and Dule for scoring now. Excited to see what tomorrow brings, but Areruya looks in menacing form.
