Welcome in Norway for the 2023 edition of the eponym Tour of Norway. Rated HC since last season, it has before been a PTHC race. As such, it has some great names at its palmares, like Taylor Phinney, Omar Fraile or Mads Würtz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_norway.jpg

Given the nature of the race, it has quite equally favoured puncheurs – most of the time with at least decent TT skills – or time-trialist who can survive the two last stages.

With Rohan Dennis now enjoying his days in the PT, Dunbar, 2nd last season, seems like the most well placed to get the win here. He’s one of the best time-trialists here, and should have sufficient skills when the road goes up to not lose too much time.

Those guys are your usual stage racers. They have the TT skills to not lose time that they might not get back on the two last stages. The Jura duo of Stüssi and Masnada might do great work.

The length and number of climbs in stage 4 might be too hard for Bobridge and Kanerva. Still, those also have a shot at a good result due to big attack to create a gap, if the TT isn’t too bad.

Zmorka is by far the best here, and he should take the leader’s jersey after S3. Other than that, those mostly are here for stage glory, and to control the breaks in the other stages. Only Paillot, Van Moer, Brunel and Küng have a real shot at a GC result, depending on the difficulty of the last stages.

A handful of sprinters for the two first stages. Bol, Zabel and Houle might have a better shot at a good result due to their abilities to survive some climbs, though those will be quite easy anyway. In any case, Zabel is the best sprinter here, so he’ll have the race on his shoulders for the two first stages.

For the team we have I think we have disappointed everyone a lot. Half way through the season and our first race of May. I think its time to turn that around. There is still plenty of time for us to come back and show everyone that we can hack it in the PCT and out of the CT. Lets go Bobridge and if he cant get a high GC I'd love a stage win or just high stage finishes consistently!

Good luck everyone!

Great preview!

Nemolito
Thank you for the preview, Imladrik. GC-wise we probably won't score a lot, but the goal should be a stage win with Zmorka (or Sütterlin). Aular might not do anything at all, but we hope to see him try on the fourth stage (unless he does a stellar job of guiding Zmorka through the Norwegian hills). Good luck to all!

Thanks for the preview! This could be a really big race for us - or a big disappointment. We have pretty much our top lineup here - supposing that climbing should matter more than pure punch on stage 4. Pogi winning there last year definitely encouraged us to send Stüssi here.

Pretty surprised to not see Powless here, I expected a great fight between him and Dunbar for the win. Now, Indosat should easily run away with the GC. But the race for the two other podium spots should be pretty wide open...
Stüssi is the clear-cut 2nd best climber, and he's also the best TTer among the climbers. The goal has to be to make S4 really hard, and with Masnada he's got a great domestique by his side. The latter could also be an option for the stage win there, if the climb isn't selective enough.
In case we have a big group there in the end, I'm obviously hoping Brunel and Küng would make it, too, given that they're among the better uphill riders among the TTers.
And then there's Bol for the sprints. Hopefully he saved his best racing for the final chance of the month. Given his strong hill stat, I'm also hoping for him to be competitive on S5 - although I obviously wouldn't mind a repeat of Küng's win last year Grin

All in all, we should have our chances on every stage. However, Bol has been awful this month - and both Ukraine and Hong Kong have shown that we're good at horribly messing up such "hybrid" races. Given the startlist, I think a Top 5 must be the goal for Stüssi - but you never know...

Good luck to everyone!

Eden95
Big opportunity to score well here for us - and no Fab, I don’t think we’re gonna run away with anything - we were supposed to last year and Dennis rode amazingly to win the race. All it takes is one bad day Smile

Definitely happy and incredibly surprised that Powless isn’t here, this would have been a big scoring opportunity for him. Regardless, the podium has to be the goal for Dunbar. I’d be happy if he landed anywhere up there. We have a strong team, and even have Nur Hasan here for the sprint stages who should hopefully fly under the radar and nab a good result or two. Setiawa is interesting with his statline too, if he has a few good days and finishes a few stages well supporting Dunbar he could wind up sneaking a nice GC. Rohendi and Kolar should be a good 1-2 duo to support Dunbar also, and to hopefully make the race too hard for the more traditional TT riders.

It’s a strange startlist, and I wonder if the final result will reflect that. I feel like there could be any number of riders winning the GC depending on how the hills are raced. Hopefully Dunbar can hang in there and land a spot on the podium.

Thank you for the preview Smile

Thanks for the preview!

All you really need to know for Glanbia is that Eastman isn't here so everything else is just hope!

Hope Kennett can sprint well, hope a TTer can have great day, hope that Main can get a top 20 in GC....

Hope that Dunbar realises how much happier he would be at an Irish team in future

Ulrich Ulriksen
We have a few wild cards here. Daniel finished 10th last year and is a better climber than most of the pure TT guys but not sure we will ride for him or that he is good enough to get any protection. Narvaez and Bagioli aren't terrible TT guys so maybe they can get some depth. But think we will be ignored, so gotta hope for the breaks. I thought I had sent Warbasse to this race, probably should have, he would had a shot at a top 5.

Feel like Stage 4 is going to the climbers so I think JURA's Stussi/Masnada combo will be right behind Dunbar.

Agree this looks good for Powless, MRE might have been concerned it was too punchy. Jorgenson is a pretty good alternative.

If Coutinho cannot sprint to results here we've wasted quite the race days. Such is the life of a team without a TTT core!

Looking forward to the race and thanks for the preview!

Normally would think stage 4 is too hard for Paillot, but he has climbed well earlier in the season. Hopefully he can put in another good effort and score a decent GC result!

Thanks for the preview and report Imladrik.

Always a nervous time being sprint favourite and getting a leadout. Happy to see Zabel hanging on for a 2nd place, he is our only viable points scorer here.

Fingers crossed he can repeat in stage 2.

Ouch...
Guess that was Bol's least smart sprint of the year, to say it kindly. Starting behind and having to catch up isn't great, either, but starting from the front and hitting the wall is even worse. Moreover, he was right next to Zabel and should just have taken his wheel...
Well, I guess we had our share of sprint luck at the start of the year - given how completely random they still are, there's at least some hope that it will be our turn again later on. But so far, this month is a complete waste of Bol's RDs...

Congrats to Colombini, and good to see a sprint train almost resulting in a win for once with Zabel taking second.
Thanks for the report, Imladrik.
