C1 – 6 Stages

The Tour de Romandie is a mixed bag of opportunities, with chances for all types of specialists. The race begins with a flat 18.3km TTT which will open up GC gaps right off the bat. A complicated sprint stage finds the riders for stage 2 although they should come to the line together. Stage 3 is a very mountainous hill stage. The final 30km should really challenge the GC contenders and we expect this to be won by a punchier climber. Stage 4 is an absolute mountain test as the riders finish on the Col de La Croix. A day for the pure climbers, but the valleys mean you’ll need some domestiques. Stage 5 is a mountain prologue which will test both their solo abilities and their climbing as the final GC day. Day 6 is for any remaining sprinters to see who is the strongest after some tough days in the high mountains.

History

Tour de Romandie is entering its 16th consecutive season in the MG calendar.

Romain Sicard joins as the only returning champion after his 2017 win, although he’s declined just a tad since then. Colin Stüssi is our top returning from 2022 when he placed 7th. He’ll hope to improve upon that placing after a great Giro d’Italia.

Rochas should be able to manage a decent result in GC, but an extremely weak TTT is going to be a real challenge. No way to impact the sprint stages besides finding the breakaway.

Meintjes is a Top 3 GC contender here, especially with such a strong TTT setup. This team has someone for every stage with Silvestre a great option for the two sprint stages as well. Great balance and some real potential for a top result.

Munoz should be focusing on a top GC result here after Caja has had some tough races the last few times out. Munoz will absolutely lose time in the time trials. Guardini should be able to find themselves in a Top 5-10 position in the sprints.

This is a fantastic depth squad for the high mountains with Guldhammer as the leader. Beniusis should be able to tow the rest of the group for a strong TTT. No sprint option might actually be good for his team to be able to stay calm on those stages. Looking for some strong results here.

Penasa will lead the group of strong climbers, but they’re missing some specialty on the hills which isn’t the most crucial bit here. Penasa is must be considered a Top 3 threat. Barta and Sicard will likely lose time on the more selective stages but a strong TTT could earn some team priority. A great TTT should bring them to the front early in the race.

One of the stronger full teams here, Indosat Ooredoo has options no matter which way the race goes. Yates is the favorite and one of the strongest in the race. Some great energy resistance could be huge for some of the more challenging stages. Nur Hasan will also contest the sprints with a great chance at a stage. 3 great TTers will also keep this group up front in the GC race to start.

This team is READY for the TTT! It would be a surprise to see one of the GIANTS not wearing the leader’s jersey after stage 1. Stussi may need his extra TT skills on stage 5 if he loses time to the best group of climbers on stages 3 and 4. Bol should make his presence known in the sprints as well!

We’re going to call Oomen the GC favorite as Lierse SK comes with a strong TTT, Oomen is the best climber in the field and he should manage to extend his gap on Stage 5. The only challenge is that Oomen may be left without domestiques before most others. If Oomen falters somehow, this could be a very challenging race.

This is a strong but confusing team to judge. Frankiny should be the GC leader, except that he’ll probably be dropped in the TT. This leaves Misbah as a good, but second tier GC option with a number of good climbers. TTT should finish in the top 5-7 spots though. Einhorn is the 2nd best sprinter in the field and could see two fantastic stage results.

Choi is the 2nd best GC rider in the entire field and many could argue Choi is even better than Oomen. Sony-Force India has a fantastic TTT as well. Carboni is a fantastic final domestique to control things, too. They should be in for a great GC fight.

Goos is the best chance for Stela-Vita here and there isn’t too much support for a top result sadly. There’s satisfactory TTT support to end middle/bottom of the pack and potential for Goos to have a decent MTT. No sprint chances for Saeco.

There’s some great climbers in this squad, but TTT is going to sink Tafjord Kraft with only 6 riders and some pure domestiques. Tafjord should absolutely hope for a stage 4 breakaway with such a great secondary options. Garby could make a strong result on stage 4 in the right scenario.

Schlegel is one of the strong combo Mo/Hi riders and could easily see success on stage 3. It’s probably best to see if Schlegel can stick on the TTT for as long as possible since without Schlegel they still can’t make it to the top of the podium.

Powless is maybe the best GC time trialist of the startlist and should use this to skyrocket up the rankings on stage 5. Zwift has a huge number of options for every mountain stage and is built for success in this tour.

Given the competition I'm glad we didn't send APP (though the TTT was reason enough not to). As sean said it's all about Russo and Chevrier here, so nothing we could reasonably expect.

After the South Africa TTT with a very similar lineup, I'm far less confident than the author of this otherwise great preview.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Ouch... I was hoping for a far less competitive field here, no clue why almost everyone picked this race in 2023...
With our TTT having made another step up, I should obviously be hoping for an improvement on Stüssi's 7th place last year - but that nasty stage 4 profile change clearly is no good for him. It has always been a breakaway stage, but now it's the most important one of the whole race - so given all the top climbers present, I guess we may have to settle for a lower Top 10. But let's race the whole thing first...
Bol hopefully will recover from his Lithuania zero-pointer; he should be just outside the Top 3 sprinters, which would be perfect.

Overall, I'd put my money on Oomen. He's got the most competitive TTT among the top contenders (if they drop their sub-70 TTers early) - but it might be close with Choi.
But I do honestly find it rather difficult to keep an overview of who's there with team-per-team previews. Whereas I absolutely love to read the assessments, I'm actually more in favor of some favourite overviews. Definitely don't want to criticize the preview - thanks a lot for doing it, sean! - it's just a matter of personal taste Wink

Tough field indeed, but our team is strong and I'm hoping for another Top 3 overall for Meintjes. Silvestre is also one of just 5-7 proper sprinters here if I'm counting correctly, so hopefully he should be able to get a couple of good results in the two flat stages. I will say, the fact that I'm having to count the number of sprinters myself isn't ideal imo and I agree with Fabianski that I miss a concise overview of the top riders on each terrain in these types of previews. I really enjoy the team by team breakdown, too, and if both is possible, that's awesome, but if I had to choose between seeing each team in full and seeing only the top contenders, the latter provides more value to me personally, at least.

That being said, I do appreciate the preview and thanks very much for taking on the race sean! Looking forward to the reports!

Choi starts his second race of the season with a strong support team. We were not expecting ourselves to be called a good TTT but we do hope the preview is more right than our assessment! Choi started off well in Colombia and we hope he can continue that here. The field is really tough though, and just one wrong move on the climbs could mean a 4-5 position swing.

One of Bennett's best races historically with a 2nd and a 3rd, he's been in poor form in races where we can actually keep the points we score so I hope he can turn it around here. Would love to see him in that TOA form again to have a proper special race Wink

Cunego: I will say, the fact that I'm having to count the number of sprinters myself isn't ideal imo and I agree with Fabianski that I miss a concise overview of the top riders on each terrain in these types of previews. I really enjoy the team by team breakdown, too, and if both is possible, that's awesome, but if I had to choose between seeing each team in full and seeing only the top contenders, the latter provides more value to me personally, at least.


I appreciate the feedback and absolutely agree. I had the same concerns as I was writing it and probably will go for the favorite overviews in the future unless I have tons of time to do both in the future. Have been trying out a few different styles as I'm still getting into it. Absolutely always willing to take feedback here, discord or skype.

Even as I was trying to compare GC favorites and sprinters in particular, I feel like my team-by-team feedback gets more accurate as the preview goes on. At the GC level, I think that I would've given Oomen and Choi official GC leader depending on what team I wrote first this time and that's not fair. I think there's definitely an argument either way for Choi or Oomen being the absolute favorite, but ideally I could've presented that argument concisely in a section comparing the two as opposed to asking everyone to find their own answer to that argument through the preview.

All of that is simply to say, there's a reason I'm not officially employed as a journalist. Looking forward to showcasing the racing here soon.

Season starting proper here for Yates. He did very well in Poland, and with the changed route and the support he has here a top-5 is the minimum goal we hope to achieve. A lot can happen in a week, so hopefully we can limit our losses in the TTT - we’re owed one after the disaster in PV that nearly ruined our race Smile I’m hoping Nur Hasan can sneak a stage win here too, would be stoked with that.

Strong list of GC guys - Oomen had to be the favourite for sure. Choi, Meintjes and Yates should be of a similar standing with them all having an opportunity to use their unique strengths to their advantage. Should be a great race!

Fwiw, if you prefer the team by team preview from a creative standpoint, I think you should continue that. I don't need a big (or any, really) analysis in text next to the overview of contenders. If you were to simply sort the participation file by mountain stat and paste the Top 10-15 in a table above the team preview without comment (and maybe Top 5-10 for sprinters), that would already be enough in my opinion. But at the end of the day, you have to see what works for you Smile Looking forward to the reports!

Hope Ranaweera can live up to his billing, top 5 would be a good result.

Haller being favourite sprinter could be a curse, lets see how the sprints play out.

Nobody expects professional quality here - personally, I'm just thankful to have you on the reporting team, putting in tons of hours to keep the game running!
As I said, it's just my personal feeling that a concise list of favourites gives me a better overview of who's there than a team-per-team presentation. As cunego said, having both is amazing, but I'll never expect that. Most importantly, a reporter should do whatever he prefers, and I think you're doing a great job!

Another really really good TTT performance by the team. Looks like our approach to have a deep, mostly balanced TT squad pays off. Meintjes losing 3 seconds to the others is fine, he's still gaining over 10 seconds on Choi and Oomen, almost 30 on Bennet and over a minute on Yates is great. Only Stüssi is (expectedly) ahead, but 7 seconds could already be made up by third place bonus seconds seconds on the hilltop finish, as an example. We need a little bit of something along those lines before the MTT if Meintjes wants to have a shot at actually winning the race. Should be a very exciting!

But first, let's see if Silvestre can do something tomorrow. And thanks for one of the most detailed TTT reports I've ever read, sean!

Best rider having to catch up from a 150th GC position is not the optimal first stage for us. We had hopes to not only have Saeco behind us in the ranking as we approach the 2nd stage, but hopefully we will try to make some breakaways because of this and maybe we can find a surprise podium along the way.
