Badaling International - Discussions
Imladrik
It’s a long and hard day which awaits the PCT and CT riders in China. Not quite Liechtenstein yet, but there still are 230 km and many bumps of various steepness.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_badaling.jpg

The race has been continuously in the calendar since 2010 – except 2012. It was a C2 race until last season, when it was upgraded to C1. Only Frank Schleck (2011 and 2014) won it twice, but the race has other prestigious winners, like Peter Sagan (2017), Caio Godoy (2018) or Jay McCarethy (2022).

Speaking of that, let’s have a look at the honour roll.

More often than not, the race has been won with a sprint from a select group of around 20 riders, sometimes less. The last solo win was Godoy’s in 2018, but the profile was different then. Notably, the last two editions, on the same route than tomorrow, saw bigger groups finish together. Still, the puncheurs should have the advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman is the best on the hills and is in excellent shape. He also has some capacities on the longer climbs, is a decent descender and has some teammates with Gebrezgabihier and Xandri. Still, he’ll has to make the decision before the last climb, as he doesn’t have the best acceleration. The specialists at this game could be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Eiking and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell, who both have little to envy to Kelderman. Though the Norwegian maybe is lacking good support to finish in good shape, it certainly isn’t the case for the American, who comes with a strong team behind him. Other notable dangers in this list are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Edmondson.

Those have their chances, if they can finish in the main group. Ekoi comes in with two punchy sprinters/sprinty puncheurs, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Russo and Paret-Peintre. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Babymetal Cycling has even more of those, but neither of them seems truly able to finish in the main group. It’s DuckDuckGo who comes here with the better chances, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Arndt and Guerreiro being solid hybrids.
On this list, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Edmondson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis were already among the favorites.

Thanks Imladrik for the preview! Smile

No pressure on Edmondson this time. Every point he takes is a bonus.
I'm hoping Eiking can perform like he should. Maybe C1 suits him better than being clear favourite in C2.

I know this was a race which had a lot of different riders in it during planning as I made an adjustment post-selections which isn't usual for the leaders. Had forgotten who I had here, seems it ended up with Houle which gives me very little expectations, though the last year's result does lend me some faith Smile
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Forgot to prioritize stamina and resistance in my selections so I think this will be a tough one for me. Would just love to come away with more than a goose egg. Maybe Squire can hold on with his mountain in a climbing focused race or someone breakaways their way to a top 25.

At least we know we won't have to work on the front of the peloton.

Beltran and Higuita are my personal picks for this one.

Pretty much just hoping to match our scoring from last season. Thanks for the preview!

kandesbunzler26
This is our combined C1/Win goal for the season, but of course we can't realistically hope for a win here given the stacked field (Teuns isn't even mentioned as an outsider ...). But we should be able to fight for a Top 10 in most scenarios: Teuns or APP could be able to stay with a group of favourites or follow or even launch an decisive attack to continue their streak of Top 10 finishes in hilly classice this season. Russo or APP could also do well in a sprint of a bigger group. Lammertink, Le Gac or Paulus (or Karatsivis given his season so far) could be nice options in the break if they manage to get there. Overall the biggest disappointment would be to not see our jerseys in any way during the race.

Good luck to everyone and thanks to Imladrik for the preview.

Well Boswell continues to underperform but once again like South Africa it seems to set things up for one of his younger compatriots. What an outstanding ride by Bagioli to take 2nd as an unmaxed rider, was sure he was going to be caught. Would have been nice if the other two could have done better than 20th and 22nd since they just needed to sit on but that is being picky.

Congrats to Meurisse/WJ and thanks for dragging my man almost to the finish.

Thanks to Imladrik for a great report.

Thanks to Imladrik for the report and congrats to WJ for the win, at least a small compensation for the disappointing start in Poland.

APP finishing 5th is a really good result, the duo of him and Teuns continues to perform constantly within the Top 10 in hilly classics though we still wait for the big result(s). Our riders also showed our colours in the race contributing in the chase which is a good sign as well.

BIG XANDRO Banana Finally we get our first win on the board!

Nice to see Turgis and Meurisse working together well. Much needed and I guess that they were just saving their leges in Poland for this race instead, thanks a lot for the congratulations and thanks for the report imladrik!

Happy new year to the entire MG!

Congrats WJ! Been awesome to see Meurisse and Turgis ride so far this season and happy this one heads your way.

Wish that Squire hadn't been gapped in one of the earlier splits (I think if I could see correctly) but he actually pulled together a decent race despite it. Count this as another disappointment for the SEE Turtles.

Thanks for the report!

9th is a decent result for Carboni, can't have too many complaints about this one.

Congrats WJ and thanks for the report Imladrik!

Thanks for the preview and great report, Imladrik!

When Higuita attacked and got a bit of space I started dreaming, but fourth is definitely still a great/acceptable result. Happy to see whitejersey victorious here with Meurisse, I wonder whether that guy will get more wins this season Wink

Finally!

A race that was expected to suit Vansevenant and luckily he showed up. Too often, he forgot to play his role and was dropped early. Here he finally shows that in theory he could be up there with the best on a lot more stages.

Losing against Meurisse and Bagioli is unfortunate, though first is having a huge season apparently.
Beating Higuita though wasn`t expected.

Hopefully some more of those performances will follow.

TheUlamog
Our team indeed has a bunch of "good" punchers, but none that can truly compete with the main forces. Regardless of that it's fun to see them try and keep up. A very nice win for Meurisse! Grin
