Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/mg_faso_01.jpg

While the world’s best cobblers fight for the famous cobblestone in one of the most prestigious races of professional cycling, the best cobblers of the other end of the MGUCI hierarchy meet at the other end of the cycling world in Burkina Faso in a race that might not be as prestigious as Paris-Roubaix, but probably as infamous (at least to the connaisseurs). The Tour du Faso is a pretty unique race, maybe the only stage race for the cobblers, and it indeed begins with a short but nonetheless insane stage.

Given the nearly 20 km long cobbled sector near the end it’s no surprise the favourites for this stage consist of the best cobblers. For a more detailed preview, have a look at the great one Laurens made.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0001.jpg

And the riders are on the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Martinelli ist he first to attack right from the start, he’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Habimana.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0002.jpg

Those two are quickly followed by some counter-attacks. 11 km into the race it seems like the peloton lets quite a big group break away, though it’s not one group yet but four.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0003.jpg

With 30 km into the race we have a group of 15 in front of the race. The group consists of:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Diaz Suarez, Orosco and Ponce
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Berhe and Habimana
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Cadena and Murillo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Franco and Zambanini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Askey
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Belevics
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Blum
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Martinelli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Richardson

The only notable cobblers (and thus riders with a realistic chance to win the stage) are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Habimana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Askey and of course pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Richardson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Kusi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Marte also attacked but were never able to close the gap to the others entirely and are now about a minute back, each riding of his own with some seconds between them and constantly losing time. The peloton is another 2 minutes back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0004.jpg

The first intermediate sprint sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Blum. Shortly afterwards the two chasers have finally given in and are back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0005.jpg

With 60 km to go the peloton is already chasing quite intensely, especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png JEWA (with up to 5 riders) works hard, but we have seen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Freuler doing long terms too. This work results in a reduced gap which is now 2’14.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0006.jpg

The second sprint sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo edged out by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Franco. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Blum is third again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0007.jpg

With 33 km to go and about 10 km to the cobbles the peloton is stretched out and there already have been some short-lived splits. The group is still ahead by a minute. Given the length of the sector the break shouldn’t have a chance to stay ahead, but maybe at least the three better cobblers of the group are able to make use of their advantage and finish with the best.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0008.jpg

And 21 km from the finish the cobbles begin. The breaks advantage is down to 32’’ and it won’t be long before the entire race blows up given the pace pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Kireva is setting right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0009.jpg

And everything’s back together with 15 km to go. The peloton is down to 68 riders, but no rider of interest has fallen back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0010.jpg

6.5 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Grand leads the remnants of the peloton of 27 riders and tries to keep contact. All the favourites are still in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0011.jpg

The cobbles are done and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chatarunga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert are now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel. The Sri Lankian should be the strongest in a sprint. But they have only a gap of 18’’ to the next group of 17 riders though that’s just an official count. In reality this group (and the next ones as well) is pretty much scattered all over the place. The biggest names already behind are probably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schäppi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Gaday, the latter is already more than a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0012.jpg

The red kite is near and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Gaday is back in the big group. But that’s not only because of his own strength, but also because the group isn’t chasing really hard. The three attackers are now 39’’ ahead and should be secure for the stage podium with only 1.4 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0013.jpg

The red kite is left behind and the front group already sprints. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chatarunga is in front and has the inner line, so it would be surprise if he doesn’t stay in front. But the other two aren’t done yet. Meanwhile the chasers sit up once again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0014.jpg

0.5 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chatarunga seems done! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert is already in front, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel is right next to him, so it’s still between the two of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0015.jpg

Further back the chasers started sprinting too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik’s in front under the red kite, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Trentin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Teggart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Naesen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Matthews.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0016.jpg

200 m to go and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert’s done too! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel still looks good and he’s overtaken the Belgian. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chatarunga is already some way behind and in danger of getting a time gap.
Further back the picture hasn’t changed much, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik seems to be the strongest here as he already has quite a gap to the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0017.jpg

Further back the picture hasn’t changed much, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik seems to be the strongest here as he already has quite a gap to the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0018.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel takes the win! What a reward for the initial attacker. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Lampaert comes in second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chatarunga is third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik finishes in an uncontested 4th place, but it’s quite close between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Naesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Matthews and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Teggart who finish in this order. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Bewley finishes in 8th place, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Trentin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Domene who edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Okbamariam for the last Top 10 spot. From there on the riders finish solo or in small groups, so we’ll have to see if and where gaps are awarded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0020.jpg

So pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel’s not only the stage winner, but of course also the GC and points leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik’s sprint results in the same time given for the first 28 riders.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo is the best U25 rider while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Strava and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Stela Vita are the best teams.
