Tour of South Africa - S2
Imladrik
Once again, the flat finish should favor the best sprinters of the punchers. At this game, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare is the best placed to take a second victory in a row.

The stage is longer, though. 188 km and 8 categorized climbs (5 cat. 3, 3 cat. 4), and the rest of the stage isn’t really flat either. This should be an opportunity for the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Benoot to drop the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Calmejane.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_28.png

Three rider quickly gain one minute on the peloton. Two of them were already in yesterday: the white jersey wearer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus, and the best climber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Petrucci. They’re accompanied by a stronger rider, the veteran pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_29.png

There are other attacks coming. They’re all shot down, mainly thanks to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Jussaume’s work. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sterbini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Nyoni are here to control as well.

The gap is 2’20 with 167 km to go. The first cat. 3 climb is coming, with the first intermediate sprint right in the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_44.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis uses his puncher’s skills to take 6 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Petrucci is right behind, for a total of 21 now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_45.png

There’s a big fight between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis for the bonus seconds. They’re for the Indonesian. 157 km to go, the gap is 2’25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_46.png

Less question for the judges at the 2nnd intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus takes 6 more bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_47.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Petrucci’s legs seem to become heavier. He can’t follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus. That’s 6 more points for the Dutch rider. He’s now 11 points behind the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_48.png

At half race, the gap stays a bit under 5 minutes (4 km). Colombini, Spark, Xero and Sony are controlling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_49.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis wins the last intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_50.png

The 3rd cat. 3 climb is coming. It’s a 6 km long, steep climb. You’ve read this name a lot, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis who takes 6 more points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Petrucci really is out of it, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus takes the lead in the classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_30.png

In the peloton, there are small splits in the descent! Some time-trialists are caught, or punchers who were already in the wrong side yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_31.png

65 km to go. The gap for the break is 3’36. The wind is now 20 km/h strong. And they’re only two now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Petrucci’s dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_32.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis wins another mountain sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus has 29, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Petrucci 26 and Bovenhuis 23.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_33.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Bovenhuis is all alone to win the first cat. 4 climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Firdaus could be caught before the summit, which could give the jersey to the Dutch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_34.png

He isn’t. The Indosat rider keeps 3 points on Bovenhuis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_35.png

Bovenhuis is taken in the last cat. 3 climb, so Firdaus will wear the polka dots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_36.png

No interest in the mountain points for the domestiques. 21 km left. In the back, the whole Saeco team is dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_37.png

The following cat. 4 climb isn’t more disputed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman tried to attack, but it was a bit too hard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita are close to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_38.png

The peloton still is 118 riders strong, with 7 km to go. There are many groups in the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_39.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita attack in the last meters of the last categorized climb. It leads to nothing though.

3,2 km left. We’re in the last place to attack, with some inclination. The end is all flat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_41.png

Nothing really happens, and with 1,1 km left in the stage, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare opens the sprint. He’s got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_42.png

500 m. Nobody can really match him in a sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Houle are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_43.png

And it’s a back to back victory for Arnaud Demare!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_23.png

Ackermann repeats his 2nd place, Buchmann is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_24.png

Hirschi is 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_25.png

McKenna pips Kelderman and Errazkin on the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_26.png

Houle can’t do better than 8th. Higuita and Benoot close down the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/SouthAfrica/S2/S02_27.png

A gap is given after the 29th rider.
With the gaps, Firdaus loses the young rider jersey. Hirschi, Tesfatsion and Stannard share the lead.
Firdaus will console himself with the best climber jersey. He’s also 3rd in the points.
Colombini and McCormick share the lead in the team classification.

No categorized climb tomorrow, but not an easy day by any mean.
