Isle of Man TTT Discussion

[C1] Isle of Man TTT

Welcome to the Isle of Man to the biggest TTT in the PCT circuit. We have only 15 teams at the start (9 from PCT and 6 from CT) - no wonder regarding the special kind of squad you need here, but be assured that those teams that are here are highly motivated.

Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_isleofman.jpg

The TTT squads will start in Douglas, the capital of Man, and – after some loops – mainly follows the route of the infamous Isle of Man TT (for those of you not into Motorsports: the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy): the first part leads westwards to the sole checkpoint in St. Johns. From there the route leads to the north-east and the town of Ramsey.

Race History

The race history probably won’t tell us much about what to expect this year as the race has been held as an ITT ever since its inaugural edition in 2009. We’ll have a short look at it nonetheless:
Though the race never was part of the highest categories of MGUCI it still is one of the most traditional ones in the lower categories as it has been continually on the calendar since 2009 (though under the name Celtic Chrono from 2018 to 2021). It was an ITT classic traditionally but will be held as a TTT for the first time this season. The former winners pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Marcel Kittel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Szymon Rekita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Marlon Zmorka are here to be the first one to win this race with a team and by themselves, thus catching up with sole two-time winner Dominique Cornu.

Favourites

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS have already excelled at the PT-levelled Copenhagen-Malmo TTT and they’re famous for focussing on TT-ing in general and TTTs in particular, so it’s no surprise to see them clearly on the top of nearly every single stat-based ranking – with the exemption of the best 3 where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos Hermanos are the best. But that’s only good enough for a third rank overall. But it will be a close race between them and the boys in green from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Glanbia who have the further advantage of a short journey. Some way back (but still with chances for a podium spot) are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Bralirwa – Stevens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McCormick Pro Cycling whose stats are nearly indistinguishable. Interestingly the top 3 teams of last years CT (and thus newly promoted teams) are among the five top favourites here, so what can their CT successors achieve here? The two best of them are ranked 6th and 7th according to the team strengths, again with pretty similar stats. And if that wouldn’t be enough, both are from more exotic regions of the cycling world. Of course we’re speaking of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png SEE Turtles. Both are closely followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Genii Hyundai N Cycling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Tryg – Gobik – two more promoted teams. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Lierse SK – Pizza Ullo PCTeam is 10th in the ranking and probably the last team able to fight for a top 5 or even podium spot regarding not primarly their overall but the top 5 ranking.

Thanks for the preview!
We had some racedays to spend, and IoM isn't too difficult to get by public transports x) It can be more rewarding than any flat classic, and bring some experence to the youngsters.

Good luck to all!

Hopefully depth matters as we aren't that strong based on the top 3 riders.

Looking forward to it.

Hopefully depth matters, as we're not the strongest based on the Top 3 riders Grin

This is one of our main target races (although not a goal race, given that it's only C1), and honestly, every result that's not a podium would be disappointing given the startlist. Glanbia close to their home, and Los Pollos with the division's TT superstar will be tough competition for sure - and if depth doesn't really matter, Assa should have their chances as well.
In Copenhagen, the results reflected the team strengths pretty well - although we lost out to a couple of slightly weaker teams. However, in this race every team of 8 is at least 1 point weaker - so I definitely hope it will be enough for our first ever TTT classic win!

Good luck to everyone, and thanks for the preview!

By the way, points are for the Top 16, so no team will leave empty-handed Smile

We're banking on the full team being helpful for the majority of this race. If this comes down to who has the best top 5 or top 3, it won't go our way; but if we can use our depth I think we can really pull out a great result. Think we'd love to see a Top 8 result and be best of the CT although anything in the top 10 is a success. At least we can say we'll automatically be the best of the new CT teams.

Best of luck to all!

Here to enjoy the CT contest and see who comes out ontop there, should be a fun way to grab a couple of points

Thanks KB.

Big race for Glanbia, Monterrey is always too hilly for us so hoping for a better result here but Jura will be very hard to beat.

By the way, a certain Glanbia rider makes his debut here, can he help us to the perfect debut ?

Nemolito
Thanks for the preview, kb Smile

Jura the one and only favourite here, unless depth doesn't matter there's no way they shouldn't be minutes ahead of the rest.

Hopefully the few inclines are not that important and we can battle it out with Glanbia for a top-3, as I'll definitely be happy with a podium spot here. If the hills are hard, though, I'm scared of what teams like McCormick and Bralirwa can do to us.

Good luck to everyone!

This is the first season in team history that we actively target TTT races, so it's cool to see that we're already in the Top 5 of favorites. And promising for stage races with TTTs, too. Hopefully we can live up to that Top 5 status, if we finish in there I'll be very happy. With Izagirre, Hadi and Uwizeyimana, we have some good riders who can pull on the uphill stretches, too. Good luck everyone, and thanks for the preview kb!

Wow, second is a fantastic result and we'll gladly take it! A shame the Jura boys didn't allow Rekyta to cross the finish line in first to become a back to back winner of the race Pfft Congratulations on an easy win, Fab Smile

And thank you for a great report, kb. Straight to the point with a solid overview of every team, exactly how I like them Smile

Thank you kandensbunzler for an awesome report!

The two norwegian teams at rock bottom here. Glad we both get some points with us from this race.

Great news for our friends in Gjensidige that this isn't a stage race though, would be hard to climb in the GC after that Pfft

Well, looks like the hilly parts rather harmed us, given our poor performance in the first half. But the team recovered nicely and sixth is a decent result given how close so many teams were. Congrats Fab, Nemo and also Mac for the nice podium finish, and thanks for the enjoyable report kb!

Thanks for a great report!

Slightly disappointed to miss 2nd place but congrats to Jura and Los Pollos. Main thing here was to not flop and we managed that, a good day out and still home in time for dinner

Four CT teams separated by just 13"! That was fun to watch (understandably not picked up in the report given it was the low Top10 positions), and sets up some fun races ahead, namely Monterrey. In that cluster, of course it was T3A that ended up worse off, but close enough I hold hopes in the coming months we can get not-bad-luck for better results.

Fairly happy with the result, which is satisfying for a C1 TTT race. It's indeed encouraging for the coming months.
Nice to see Jura on the top of things too!

Thanks for the report KB!

I definitely do like what I saw in the report Grin
The boys did a great job, and dropping Janssen pretty early on (likely on a climb) clearly was the right thing to do. Winning comfortably is encouraging for Pais Vasco and South Africa later this month - although I honestly expected more than roughly a one-minute gap to the weakest teams (bar Gjensidige) on such a long course. But a win is a win, and it's one of the big pre-season targets checked off - first win in a TTT classic Smile

Thanks for the congrats to everyone, and congrats from my side to LPH and Glanbia on the well-deserved podium spots.
Pretty surprised to see Lierse that high up; guess they deserved some luck after a lackluster season so far. Looks like "trimming the fat" early on can work out pretty well after all...
On the other hand, don't really get what went wrong with some teams - mainly Gjensidige of course. I could imagine that they lost their 60- TTers very, very early on, and then had to slow down on the climb to not lose Knotten as well (or even Van Moer, if Mo also matters; don't think so, as LPH would also have struggled otherwise) - maybe this strategy just tired some riders too quickly, and they couldn't recover enough to still contribute a lot.
Could also be an explanation why Assa Abloy are that far down - if they had to wait for Gonzalez Salas on the uphills - one of the worst uphill TTers - this could well be the reason why.

Anyway, thanks for the report to kb, would you mind doing all my other TTTs as well? Pfft

@Nemo: Well, the team is more important than the single rider - and the team got back-to-back wins here, so all is fine Wink At least Szymon got his first points in his first race of the year Smile

Congrats to Jura for a fantastic race and for all those finding success! No complaints here as we slot in about where we should. Wish we would've dropped a guy or two for a couple more seconds, but a strong result gave us everything we're looking for.

Thanks for the report KB. Fifth in the preview and fifth in the finish, team was built to survive rather than thrive in the TTTs so this was the kind of outcome we hoped for.

Congrats to JURA on the expected win.
