Welcome to the 6th edition of the San Marino Classic, Coppa Placci. The race has changed its profile since its first edition, but it still has plenty of sharp climbs to test the riders over the 162 km long course. Still over the last couple of years the race seems to be decided on the final that takes the riders to the finish line. It's a steep one that requires a large extended effort and not just a quick acceleration. We have seen punchy climbers do well here as a result. There are also no former winners on the startlist so a chance for someone new to be written in the history books.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Eiking | 71 | 69 | 81 | 78 | 74 | 68 | 76 | Jensen | 71 | 70 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 66 | 76 | Edmondson | 70 | 69 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 70 | 76 | Dyrnes | 68 | 72 | 78 | 73 | 73 | 65 | 77 | Eriksson | 72 | 67 | 78 | 78 | 74 | 65 | 76 | Teuns | 68 | 75 | 78 | 73 | 73 | 66 | 72 | Lagane | 70 | 70 | 77 | 70 | 71 | 75 | 77 | Duchesne | 70 | 67 | 77 | 73 | 72 | 69 | 79 | Morin | 70 | 65 | 78 | 75 | 73 | 69 | 76 | Lafay | 66 | 75 | 77 | 72 | 72 | 63 | 74 | Villella | 72 | 65 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 65 | 80 | Zordan | 67 | 73 | 77 | 72 | 72 | 65 | 74 | Grossschartner | 67 | 74 | 77 | 72 | 73 | 62 | 72 | Hindley | 71 | 72 | 76 | 75 | 72 | 67 | 73 | Mayer | 68 | 69 | 77 | 65 | 72 | 72 | 77 |
Eiking has missed out on the first two hilly classics of the year and he'll want to put things right, but the final climb could potentially be too hard for him. Jensen is a slightly better climber and is coming off a win in San Jose, two in a row? Edmondson is a CT veteran at this point and usually a very consistent rider, maybe this is his big break. I think Dyrnes is a real threat with his punch and climbing, he was 2nd last year and has the best super domestique in Eriksson.
When talking about puncheurs with climbing ability Teuns and Lafay need to be mentioned. Lagane is by far the fastest finisher, but the ending might not suit him that well. Then again if a rider as good as Mayer
protects him till the very end. Duchesne and Villella are the acceleration aces, but again their lack of climbing might hurt them. Morin could struggle with that also. Zordan has a couple top 10 results here, so he could be a dark horse contender. Grossschartner and Hindley are also decent enough climbers.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Freuler | 69 | 72 | 75 | 73 | 75 | 67 | 75 | Hermans | 73 | 66 | 75 | 75 | 77 | 69 | 76 | Sirironnachai | 71 | 66 | 77 | 77 | 74 | 64 | 73 | Rota | 69 | 71 | 76 | 76 | 74 | 66 | 71 | Lienhard | 73 | 66 | 75 | 77 | 72 | 73 | 76 | Gogl | 69 | 69 | 76 | 74 | 72 | 67 | 75 | Vliegen | 71 | 67 | 77 | 76 | 70 | 66 | 74 | Felline | 67 | 65 | 76 | 74 | 72 | 73 | 77 | Pacher | 70 | 71 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 70 | 73 | Hugentobler | 70 | 68 | 78 | 70 | 69 | 56 | 76 | Yates | 71 | 65 | 78 | 77 | 74 | 62 | 69 | Destribois | 69 | 76 | 75 | 68 | 69 | 61 | 75 | Moazemi | 66 | 72 | 77 | 70 | 70 | 64 | 71 |
This list is either populated by good domestiques or as the title says "outsiders". Simba Cement will hope at least one of their 5 riders comes up with a good result. Other solid rider are Sirironnachai, Vliegen and representing the PCT division are the Kraftwerk duo of Destribois and Moazemi. Yates is here for Spark-BNZ.

Thanks red for the preview!
Everything inside the top 10 will be good to close out the month.
PS: Strange to see Mercatone Uno not competing at all this month. Especially in C2 races like this (and Gent-Wevelgem).

I’m curious to see how Yates does here leading the team. I worry that the structure of the team has Schleck leading rather then Yates leading to a bad race for Yates. Will see how it turns out

Looking forward to Coppa Placci after a disappointing Catalunya.
The podium looks very unlikely, but at the same time I feel like 3 guys in top-10 is possible with some luck.

First race where my puncheurs can show their strenghts. Hope that we can get a good result out of Grossschartner or Lienhard!
Looking at the lineups for the race, I am afraid that this will be very difficlut though. Some great riders starting. Will be very exciting to watch!

After the last hilly classic where we finished 40th with this line-up, i'm calibrating my expectations accordingly - A top 20 please? Won't help in terms of promotion, but some progression would be welcome in my attempts to stabilise this season.

Thanks for the preview to red and let's hope you're right about the punchy climbers as Teuns should be one of the best on the startlist. Apart from him we only have Russo with a small chance if the AI thinks this is more of a sprint finish. Maybe we see some of our youngsters in the break, Karatsivis is still without a podium this month
Good luck to all of you!

Great result for us with a podium and our first top 3 ranking of an Austrian rider. Thanks for the report and congrats to Bordeaux Métropole for the win!

F*ck me, 21st from Mustumine. It's an improvement yes but still, f*ck me! Mayer 65th, Lagane 68th total non-entities again.
Brendan Canty is going to win team MVP by a goddamn mile at this rate.

Wow, Lafay is having an amazing year, going even one better than in Costa Rica (swapping positions with Jensen). Congrats to Imladrik!
Lafay and Grossschartner are rather surprising to see on the podium, with Eiking, Edmondson and Teuns all missing out (and a particularly rough race for Tafjord with both 78 puncheurs not doing great), but the CT field is just wide open with only few top-level puncheurs. Schelling and Schleck also suggest that some climbing skills were pretty useful, despite the race being rather easy and the final climb not that long, either.
Feeling sorry for TMM, whose puncheurs really aren't doing what they should be doing - hopefully races like Izola will suit them better!
Thanks for the report to Abhi, although you may not have the best memories of this race

Hmmm, 7th isnt exactly what we hoped for, especially dissapointed by Erikssons effort.
Congrats Imladrik and thank you very much Abhishkek for the extensive report |

13th with Schleck. Not the best race but we come away with points at least. Yates still struggling as the leader though. Hopefully he can improve. Schleck wouldve been hoping for a top 10 I'm sure.
Congrats to the winner and the excellent report!

Yes! Lafay winning after the podium in San José and the work for the team in the other races make me quite happy.
Seing Rodriguez sticking with him at first and dropping quite back after that validates the team's depth, and Doubey's result as well.
Thanks for the report, and sorry for those who were mistreated.

This one definitely hurt. Thinking you're a favorite and then missing the points altogether... we will simply look forward to March.
Congrats to Lafay! Really looking like a great season for him.
