Circulo de Juarez - S1
Imladrik
Welcome in Mexico for the 2023 edition of the Circulo de Juarez. The first stage – of 5 – will be, as the others, for the sprinter, and will bring the peloton of PCT teams – with three CT teams tagging along – from Ciudad Juarez to Ascension.
This first day could already show surprises, with its bump, if you call so the two category 4 climbs. One of them is only 30 km from the finish line and could be incentive for some determined attzckers.
But the bookmakers have no illusions, and they place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen as the ultimate favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_23.png

Three riders attack right at the start of the race: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Bulux, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Demiri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe. The first categorized climb of the day is only 10 km away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_24.png

Also, seeing the big crowd present to cheer on the riders, it’s a good time to show the jersey! And I’m sure they all have a saying on whether Quispe’s coulours are good or bad. Maybe we’ll interview them later, but for now, there’s activity on the road!

Indeed, attacks are continuing, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Alben seems quite alone to control of that. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Fenn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo are the next to try their luck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_35.png

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png van Sintmaartensdijk comes helping, and everyone is brought back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe has good legs and insists!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_39.png

Thanks to his determination, the Peruvian is first at the “summit” and takes 5 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Demiri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Fenn are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_40.png

Having brought back a fourth attacker, the chasers finally let the break go, with 160 km left today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Ocampo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Golovash, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Piccolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Van Aert lead the peloton on a big, straight road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_41.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe isn’t too tired by his 10 km solo ride: he’s 1st in the intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_42.png

133 km to go, and the gap is 5 minutes.

We hope you didn’t fall to sleep during this 100 km of straight and quite uneventful racing: we’re at the second sprint, and entering the finish. The order is exactly the same as the first: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Demiri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Fenn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_43.png

44 km left, the gap is 2’21 and there’s another cat. 4 climb in 10 km.

Assa Abloy and Fastned are well committed to the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_44.png

And it’s 4 on 4 for Quispe. The Peruvian has been well briefed by his manager and shows the colors for the home race. Let’s hope for them that their sprinter will do the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_45.png

Though one could not call this bumps real climbing, they show Quispe’s great skill on the flat. A jersey well deserved.

Behind them, Sony ups the pace to bring the break back, with a big relay from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke.

18 km left, and the gap went under the minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe isn’t tired and he insists! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Demiri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Fenn are a lot less interested.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_25.png

But Fastned doesn’t want any of this. They send
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Renard, and the young French shatters any hope there could still be. That leaves time for the sprinters to organize, with 11 km still to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_26.png

5 km, and one can’t really say if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Rickaert attacks, or if he’s pulling strongly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_27.png

Some sprinters, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol are there. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen has his train further down the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Halvorsen is on his own on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese took the Fastned train.

Strange tactic by Sony, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely in 2nd position with 3 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen is back with all the other sprinters. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese isn’t in position right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_28.png

2 km. The Fastned train is back together and has a bit of an advance, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Perera in their slipstream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese is good now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_29.png

Flamme rouge! Dainese and his teammate Gibbons are each for himself. Groenewegen is next, some meters ahead of the bunch of sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_30.png

800 m. Dainese has the advantage, then we have Groenewegen and Ackermann. Halvorsen is on the left. The first line behind has Aniolkowski, Vesely, Perera and Waldscheid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_31.png

600 m. Groenewegen and Dainese were messy in the sprint prep, and they’re losing speed. Ackermann is coming fast, but Aniolkowski, Abdul Halil and Manninen are even faster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_32.png

400 m. It’s finished for Groenewegen. Dainese probably won’t resist. The three aforementioned are the fastest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_33.png

200 m for Aniolkowski. Surely that’s enough to resist to Manninen?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_34.png

It is! And by a good margin! Abdul Halil is 2nd and the Flying Finn is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_36.png

Then it’s Kennett, Zabel and Halvorsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_36.png

Petit is 7th, Dainese resists to Bonfiazio and takes 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Juarez/S1/S1_37.png

Einhorn is 10th.

It’s the provisional GC and points classification for Aniolkowski. Dainese will be consoled by taking the lead in the young rider classification.
Quispe will wear the best climber jersey.

It’s a very similar stage tomorrow, though shorter.
