Tirreno-Adriatico | Stage 7
Imladrik
Last day of the week here in Italy, and last occasion to shake the GC or, for some teams, to salvage the race. They have 244 km, a cat. 2 and two cat. 1 climbs to do that. Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus really be challenged? He certainly was threatened yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_29.png

Speaking of the leader’s team, they insatiable, as they come fast at the front, trying to limit the break to 7 riders. Those are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Christakos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Sergis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kennaugh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_30.png

Many others are trying to take it though, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Battistella.

The peloton settles with the 7 first though, for now. Again, 5 Moser riders take lead. The gap is 1’40 with 250 km to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_41.png

At one point, cycleYorkshire joins the chase to keep the gap manageable.

This gap is 4 minutes when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Martinez comes first in the sprint in Castiglione del Lago.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_45.png

192 km left in today’s stage.

There’s no particular incident as the riders arrive in Spoleto for the 2nd intermediate sprint, right before the climbing begins. The gap went up to 6 minutes, but it’s nowjust under 5 minutes. Moser and cycleYorshire are still the teams committed to the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_46.png

Again, no competition for the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann is the one taking the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_47.png

The first mountain to climb is the Forca di Cerro (cat. 2, 9,4 km, 4,4%). A good appetizer for what comes next.
It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin who comes in first, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Sergis. Starting the day with zero points, none of them has any chance to overcome Kudus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_48.png

90 km left, and the gap is 4 minutes.

Right after the descent, the Forca Capistrello is another story (cat. 1, 16,5 km, 5,6%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_49.png

In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Hansen is the first to be dropped, along pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kortsidakis, who punctured at the worst moment.

And soon enough, we can see the peloton leaking! The big relays from cycleYorkshire and Moser drop many sprinters or time-trialists. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Zukowsky is hauling the pack for now. More than 7 km left to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_50.png

In the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Christakos is dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_51.png

3,3 km to go for the summit. A 106 men peloton is 3 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin attacked, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kennaugh is better and takes 16 points. Behind, the break is scattered. In the peloton, the biggest name dropped is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Arensman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_31.png

5 riders make it back together in the valley: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Sergis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Christakos are further back. The peloton is at 2’47.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_32.png

All the favorites’ teams are letting Moser and cycleYorkshire do the work, but they might be lacking domestiques at some point.

The last climb is arriving soon enough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio doesn’t wait and attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_33.png

To no avail. With 15 km left, the gap to the peloton is under 2 minutes.

It goes back to 2’15 at the 10 km mark! Could the break surprise the peloton?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_34.png

Not if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle can help it. They take matters in hand.
But it’s not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski on the move: it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour again! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig still is in yesterday’s form and follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_35.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Vervaeke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Peters are tasked to bring them back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Wellens uses this moment to launch another attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_36.png

7 km left. Those moves clearly mean it’s over for the break.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour is passing through them. He dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig. In the back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton are happy to let Gazelle work, as they don’t have many domestiques left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_37.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski! The American pushes the pedals and flies through the attackers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus still is further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_38.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig manages to take his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil are 12 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_39.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton tried, but wasn’t able to bridge the gap, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus goes at it with 4 km left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar manages to get to the chasing group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_40.png

3 km left, and those are the hardest of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar nearly joined the leaders, but for now he’s in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_42.png

Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil. Then a still 88 men strong peloton.

One kilometer later, Galta seems in trouble in the chasing group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_43.png

And we’re at the flamme rouge! The chasers nearly are caught. Padun, Tenorio, Almeida and Cattaneo are on a bad position in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_44.png

600 m. Kudus is still riding at the front. How much time can he hold on like this? Morton is 11 seconds behind the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_52.png

300 m. Kudus simply is too strong. He flies to his 3rd stage win! Neither Dombrowski nor Haig seem able to beat him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_53.png

And that’s it! Kudus wins the 7th stage and the GC of Tirreno-Adriatico!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_54.png

Dombrowski is 2nd, Haig 3rd.

Morton is 4th, some 14 seconds later. If that’s the gap given, he’ll lose his 2nd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_55.png

It’s another strong stage by Pogacar. He’s 5th, ahead of Galta and Barguil.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_56.png

Amezawa, Latour and Wellens close the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S7/S7_57.png

And indeed, Morton loses the 2nd spot of the podium for 3 seconds. He’ll stay at the 3rd position though. Dombrowski takes his place, nearly one minute behind Kudus.
After two strong stages to finish the race, Haig will be happy with 4th. Tenorio was more discreet the last days, but he’s 5th in the GC nonetheless.
Kudus also wins the point and mountain classifications.
Pogacar is the best young rider, ahead of Jorgenson and Chaiyasombat.
Carlsberg and Lidl dominate the team classification, well ahead of Binance.

That’s it for this week in Italy. I hope to see you soon!
