Tirreno-Adriatico | Stage 6
Imladrik
Mountains, 2nd part on 3. Not the hardest, you could think at first glance, with “only” a cat. 2 (Forchetta di Palena) and a HC climb (Passo Canciano). But then you see the day will be 230 km long! Only the most resistant riders can fight for victory in the cat. 3 finish in Chieti.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_30.png

There are also 2 uphill intermediate sprints (at 180 and 220 km).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski are the biggest favorites – once more, you could say –, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo also seen doing good. The Gazelle leader and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil could also make use of their superior descending skills.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida will need to attack!

The fight to take the break is fierce once again, as this also might be a good day for a stage win! Four men managed to get out fast: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Phodingam (5th U25), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Arensman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Battistella and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov (3rd best climber).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_31.png

Only Arensman and Vlasov seem able to fight for a win in this group.

Three others manage to beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser and take the break: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio (3rd U25) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Ulysbayev.
Moser is at the front to discourage other attacks. Maybe they should calm down and protect their leader…

After 15 km of racing, the front 7 are together and have 3 minutes lead. 40 km to go before the first slopes of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_46.png

Thanks to the work of 5 Moser riders, the gap only grows slowly, but it grows! And when it reaches 4’30 (about the time between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus and the best placed riders in the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Phodingam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire comes in help. The brave domestiques are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_47.png

It’s on for the Forchetta di Palena! (cat. 2, 31,3 km, 3,3%). It’s not too hard, but it’s long! The break has 5’20 on the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_48.png

In the climb, the gap grows up to 7’, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png joins the chase and it’s dropping fast! 6 km left in the pass, 140 km in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_49.png

Smart attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Phodingam to take 10 points at the summit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov. With 24 points, the Russian leads the provisional classification again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_50.png

The break’s advance shrinks in the downhill and flat section. It’s 3’24 with 85 km left. Moser and Gazelle still are the teams working in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_51.png

The gap is down to 1’30 at the foot of the terrible Passo Lanciano (HC, 14,9 km, 8%). The peloton seems mostly complete, but there were some alerts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_52.png

The intermediate sprint isn’t disputed by the break. The points go to Arensman, Rubio and Beltran.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Battistella is the first to lose contact. Not a surprise. Still 7 km to climb. In the peloton, the sprinters and rouleurs are suffering.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_32.png

9,5% slopes, but no fear for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour, who attacks! The Frenchman also is a decent descender.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_33.png

Feeling him coming, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Arensman ups the pace in the break. Enough to drop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Ulysbayev. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Rubio cracks soon after.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_34.png

3,3 km left to climb. The remaining break members try to stay in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour’s wheel. 1’10 behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig attacks and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus reacts!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_35.png

Last km before the summit, but 40 km to ride still. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour is alone in the front, with 30 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana lead a 79 men peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_36.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa is the most notable name caught behind.

It’s 20 mountain points for Latour, 23 in total. No best climber jersey yet: Vlasov still is better, and Kudus should take the lead again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_37.png

Latour is joined by Kudus and Haig in the valley. 20 km and 2 climbs left. The trio has 1’01 on a 36 men peloton led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg. All the top 10 is here, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Mas (11th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo (12th) missed the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_38.png

But everyone, including the leaders; is back together soon after. Only 10 km left!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_39.png

It’s the moment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Wellens chooses to attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_40.png

It doesn’t get anywhere, mostly thanks to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Williams’ work.

We’re in for a punchy finale! Two climbs in Chieti to finish the day. The first, uncategorized, is 2,5 km long, with an 8,5% gradient. There’s also an intermediate sprint at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_41.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Shikai attacked, but they couldn’t get a gap. Still, it’s a group of 22 which should dispute the victory. 4,3 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_43.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Eenkhoorn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amezawa are among the names missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil attack in the descent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_44.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Galta try to follow.

Final climb of the day! Cat. 3, 2,2 km, 9,8%. Only the fresher will be able to fight for victory. The end is flattish, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_45.png

The five aforementioned have 13’’, Wellens leads the chase.

1,4 km and Haig attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_53.png

At the (virtual) flamme rouge, it’s hard to get a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_54.png

400 m. It’s mostly flat now. Haig, Barguil, Galta, Pogacar, Formolo and Dombrowski will fight for victory. Latour, Morton and Kudus are a bit behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_55.png

200 m. Haig manages to resist at the front, but Dombrowski has the legs to sprint!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_56.png

But he’s too late! By nothing, Haig takes an outstanding victory. Dombrowski settles for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_57.png

Barguil is 3rd, Galta 4th. Then come Formolo and Pogacar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_58.png

Latour, Morton and Kudus should lose a bit of time…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S6/S6_59.png

After an attacking day at the saddle, Wellens comes in 10th.

In the end, no gap is given before the 22nd rider. Cattaneo is the first to lose time. He drops to 17th in the GC.
Kudus still is leading, but he sees Dombrowki coming back closer. The Eritrean leads the points and mountain classifications.
Pogacar is by far the best young rider.
Carlsberg still leads the team classification.

Last day tomorrow, and everything can still change!
