5th day in Italy, and the beginning of the GC chase, even though Kudus already showed his ambitions yesterday. It should also be the last day in blue for Enger.
After an easy first part, the riders will tackle an uncategorized climb – but with an intermediate sprint at the summit in Rocca di Corno –, the cat. 1 Passo delle Capanelle and a HC finish in Prati di Tivo. There is also an intermediate sprint at the half of the mountain.
171 km on top of that, so the best climbers obviously are the favorites.
The leash should be more loose today, so there’s a fierce battle for the break. The first attackers are veteran Beltran, Andersen, the provisional best climber Vlasov and Ries.
The teams trying to organize behind are Moser (Salazar), MOL (Campenaerts) and Minions (Barbier).
In the end, only the four aforementioned could escape. Nobody really wants to go harder with a long day ahead. Moser and Cedevita take the head of the peloton.
The gap is about 3 minutes at the foot of the first climb (cat. 3, 5,3 km, 5%). Only Vlasov has mountain points yet, but he’ll have to battle with two better climbers.
There was a good collaboration in the climb. And contrary to what the images seem to show, Beltran times his sprint better and takes 6 points. It’s 4 for Vlasov and 2 for Andersen.
136 km to go.
Cedevita and Moser have 7 riders working in total, so the gap is kept between 3 and 4 minutes. They even become 2 minutes at the foot of the uncategorized climb (14 km, 3,6%). Reminder: there’s a sprint at the top.
Only Ries and Andersen are interested in the points and bonus seconds, and it’s the ISA rider who comes in first. Vlasov takes the final spot.
79 km left, and the gap is 3’09.
Soon after, there is the first surprise of the day, as 5 riders are dropped due to the frantic pace in the pack: Girmay, Bouglas, Hepburn, Campenaerts and Kachur. They might not stay the only ones for long, as the peloton is stretched full of holes.
Meanwhile, our three leaders begin the Passo delle Campanelle (cat. 1, 13,3 km, 4,6%) with a 1’28 gap.
Buitrago and Turek are leading the pack.
Ries makes the whole climb at the head of the break, and the peloton is coming back fast.
Ouch, that’s hard to see: Vlasov is dropped from the break and will lose his jersey. Beltran suffers the same fate soon after, though he could be waiting for his leader.
And what a climb for Ries! He’s alone on the front with 3 km left (to the summit, not for the stage). No chance to take the best climber jersey though: at most, he will be tied with Vlasov, but the stage winner will take 20 points…
That’s 16 points in the bag nonetheless, and they are deserved!
Behind, Gavars has attacked. He could also be tied with 18 mountain points.
He’s indeed let go, which also allowed Ried to take back 50 seconds.
The peloton is down to 131 riders. Once again, Almeida is barely holding on. Is the Portuguese rider sick? This could be another bad day for MOL, as Kennaugh is suffering the same fate. The only other climber dropped is Buitrago.
38,5 km are left.
And finally, Ries is at the last climb of the day. His gap to the peloton is 50’’, but this last pass is terrible (HC, 14,2 km, 7,1%).
Gazelle takes the lead in the pack, with Peters, Sosnitskiy and Vervaeke. Dombrowski is safe inside the peloton, but Kudus and Enger are close to the front.
And the first actions within the favorites! 11 km from the line, Tenorio attacks! He’s followed by Enger, Prasad, Harrison and Farantakis. What do all these sprinters hope? Surely they won’t hold on until the intermediate sprint…
In any cases, these moves are the death of any hopes Ries might still have.
Tenorio obviously drops everyone, and has a 30’’ gap. Almeida is dropped this time, but he has four teammates with him.
The lead is up to 1 minute at the sprint point. Behind, Kudus, Morton, Barguil and Bouchard are near the front.
5 km left, and it’ll not get easier right now. The gap is 34 seconds to a 111 men strong peloton.
4 km left, and I fear that Tenorio won’t make it: Kudus attacked, with Morton in his wheel. And they are coming fast! Dombrowski missed the move and is trying to make the jump.
3 km. Tenorio still has a gap. The next km is the hardest. Dombrowski can’t quite get out of the peloton – while it’s finally the end for Enger, who is dropped.
At the 2 km mark, Kudus and Morton are about to reach Tenorio. They have 25 seconds to Dombrowski. Wellens is riding behind. Formolo, Pinot and Cattaneo are further back.
And finally, we have a trio under the flamme rouge. Tenorio holds on. Morton is on the right. They have 28 seconds on Dombrowski, 35 seconds on a group of 5: Wellens, Haig, Galta, Latour and Pogacar.
Further behind there is a group of 6, whose most notable riders are Formolo, Barguil and Mas.
Was there ever any doubt? It’s a back to back victory for Kudus who crushes the stage!
Morton is 2nd. He followed the right attack, but wasn’t ever in a position to challenge Kudus.
Dombrowski is 3rd and will lose at least 34 seconds. Tenorio was brave and is rewarded with a 4th place.
Galta then leads home Wellens and Pogacar. Haig is a bit behind them.
Then we have Latour and Formolo to close the top 10.
Padun loses nearly 2 minutes. Same fate for Pinot, Barguil and Cattaneo.
The disaster is confirmed for MOL, with 16’ lost.
Everybody made it back on time.
With the bonus seconds, Kudus is the new leader and has 33 seconds on Morton, more than 1 minute on Dombrowski.
He’s tied with Enger for the points classification, and leads the mountains classification.
Pogacar has a tight grip on the young rider jersey, ahead of Jorgenson and Rubio.
Carlsberg is the new best team, ahead of Zara and Binance.
Tomorrow should be even harder. Will someone be able to challenge Kudus? It might also be a good day for those who have lost time...
