Tirreno - Adriatico | Stage 4
Imladrik
We’re at half race, here in Italy, and we leave the somewhat flat roads for 193 km of hills between the Cascate delle Marmore – an antique site South of Spoleto, to Bellante, already close to the Adriatic. After 125 km and a cat. 3 climb (the Fuscello pass) and a sprint in the medieval town of Ascoli Piceno, the riders will make two and a half tour of a circuit to an uphill finish, the three climbs also being cat. 3.

Will we see the GC battle begin today, or maybe the climbers will let the punchers have their fun and keep their forces for the three mountainous days to come. You’ll have the answers in a bit less than 200 km.

There are only 4 km of flattish roads before it goes up, so the window for attacks is small! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Gavars is the first to go, followed by the KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Kiflay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_02.png

There was some others attacks, but they have been shot down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Croes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Campenaerts managed to escape, and is between the break and the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_03.png

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Kiflay who leads the break in the first slopes in Arrone (uncategorized, 5,2 km, 5,5%).
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Campenaerts is caught, and the peloton stops the chase, allowing this break of three. No big chances of success for them, so it should mostly be a battle for the best climber jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Amaysim (Kennaugh, Miller, Harper) takes place at the front of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_04.png

The gap doesn’t expand much in the two climbs before the cat. 3 pass (7,5 km, 4,5%). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Kiflay again does most of the work, even though he’s not the best climber. Amaysim and Cedevita are working well the keep the leash tight. In the mountain sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov lets his climber skills talk and takes his first 6 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Kiflay manages to beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Gavars and holds 10 points, and the virtual lead of the classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_05.png

157 km left, and the gap is 3’11.

The 60 following kilometers are calm: the break extend their lead up to 5’30 in the medium mountains, but the pack works well to bring it back to 2’48 in the valley. The sprint is 6 km away and Rabobank joined the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_06.png

The sprint begins quite late – and I suppose it’s more for the crowd’s pleasure than for the points or the bonus seconds. It’s won by Kiflay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_07.png

And now the race will truly begin! 43 km are left, the leaders are in Bellante for a climb they’ll take 3 times (cat. 3, 4,3 km, 5,9%). The peloton is 1’30 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_08.png

But it’s terrible for Kiflay: he’s dropped by Vlasov’ high pace. He’ll probably lose his jersey today. In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Stash punctured and might have a hard time coming back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_09.png

The camera missed him, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov obviously has the best legs. He accelerates a bit and easily takes 6 more mountain points, and the virtual lead. Meanwhile, Kiflay has been eaten by the pack, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Groselj is dropped.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Andersen and Korsaeth suffer the same fate soon after.
In the valley, it’s the end for Vlasov, who’s brought back by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Meeus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Zumer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad with 28 km left. No contest for the 3rd mountain sprint, the points to the workers of the pack, reduced to 165 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_11.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vlasov has trouble holding on in the pack: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Fernandez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Meeus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke ride at a high pace!
And it’s on for the last climb of the day! Cedevita thinks pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger can keep his jersey one more day, he’s close to the front. Same for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_12.png

Don’t mind me: with 2 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar went up: je’s on the right, in white, following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton. The Australian champion seems quite alone.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Vasyliv is setting up Beltran in the middle. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski is waiting behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Ariesen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus are here too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_13.png

Flamme rouge! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran leaves room for Padun. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig are on the same line than the three popo4Ever riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_14.png

700 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kudus is going like a madman on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_15.png

400 m and it’s a duel between Kudus and Dombrowski. I’m having 2022 Vuelta vibes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_16.png

200 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Galta is the fastest with room ahead of him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour seems well, but he’s boxed in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_17.png

The stage is for Kudus! The climbers take the first occasion they have to put their mark on the race. Dombrowski is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_18.png

It’s hard to say, but the commissaires give the 3rd place to Galta. Latour is 4th, Padun 5th and Formolo 6th. Van Poucke is 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S4/S4_19.png

Pogacar, Haig and Johannessen close the top 10.

The 77 first riders are given the same time, so Enger manages to keep the leader’s jersey one more day. Kudus takes 2nd, ahead of Kalaba and Farantakis.
ELCO’s management will not like to see their climber missing the split, though, but the biggest loser of the day probably is MOL's Almeida!
Vlasov is the new best climber.
Pogacar keeps the best young rider jersey.
And Cedevita continues to do very well, with the first place in the team classification.

It only gets harder now: we go in the mountains for the next three days!
