Tirreno - Adriatico | Stage 3
Imladrik
Welcome back for the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico! Today will be quite similar to yesterday: some bumps, a cat. 3 climb, an uphill intermediate sprint, and a flat finish. Obviously the favorites list is the same too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter will want to do better, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger will try to keep the leader’s jersey one more day, and to take some advance in the points competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_00.png

Stay with us, as we’ll delve deeper in central Italy, to Terni, the birth – and deathplace of the day’s Saint, Saint Valentine. Now the race is on, and the riders will have to focus on it, and not on their special ones.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich is the first to attack. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Dversnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Kiflay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Gloag and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung. The Hong-Kong rider is the only one with mountain points yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_01.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Buitrago,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Hofstetter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Bouglas were tasked with chasing the break. They provoked a higher pace from the attackers, and only Dversnes, Gloag and Kiflay stay at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_02.png

With Puma – SAP also sending a man at the front, any willingness to attack is shut down, and the leader’s advance quickly grows. It’s 4’38, as they arrive at the foot of the mountain sprint (5 km, 4,8%).
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Gloag is the best climber of the trio, but after pulling them up, he can’t stay at the front and only gets 2. The 6 points are for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Kiflay, now tied with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson. The Erithrean only has to finish with the main group to take the jersey for himself, as the MOL rider lost quite some time yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_03.png

The peloton is at 5’26. Puma, ELCO, Cedevita and Rabobank still are the team at the front.

The next hundred of kilometer or so is quite flat, with not much happening, except a puncture for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Peters, who didn’t have any difficulty to come back in the peloton. Now with 55 km left, the gap is down to 2’39. We’ll begin the last plateau of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_04.png

Cedevita must fear an attack, as they have four men at the front: Howson, Buitrago, Bouchard and Crncevic. Or maybe they want to catch the break before the intermediate sprint? They have 10 km to do that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_05.png

The men in orange were not able to do so, though. It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Dversnes who takes the 6 points and bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_06.png

26 km are left in today’s stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Groselj leads the peloton to make the catch, are the riders are approaching the end of the plateau.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_07.png

We’re down, only 10 km left. ELCO and Rabobank lead the peloton at a high pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_08.png

4,6 km left, and two trains are set, by these same teams: ELCO on the left, Rabobank on the right. Race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger is at the back of the ELCO train, as are most other sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_09.png

2,5 km. ELCO is leading (Bester, Bouglas, Farantakis). They are trying to remove the others from their slipsteam. Rabobank’s train still is on, but at the back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter is even further, with Steimle trying to bring him forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_10.png

Not the flamme rouge yet, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis feels he has to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Meeus is leading out Van Poppel on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough has Farantakis’ wheel. The Puma rider on the right is Steimle…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_11.png

800 m. Farantakis is leading, with Keough behind. Enger is the fastest for now. Van Poppel seems to have a hard time accelerating, after he left Meeus’ wheel, while Kanter seems too far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_12.png

500 m. Farantakis still is holding on. The fastest are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kennaugh (on the far left), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Zingle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Harrison. Van Poppel and Kanter don’t seem to have the legs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_13.png

200 m and it’s terrible for Farantakis, as the Greek is fading. Harrisson found space, it should play between him and Enger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_15.png

And this one was easier! It’s a back-to-back victory for Enger!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_16.png

Kalaba is 2nd, Prasad is 3rd, and Harrison 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_17.png

Keough comes in 5th, Zingle 6th, Kennaugh is 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_18.png

Larsen, Ovsyannikov and Van Poppel close the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/S3_19.png

Farantakis faded in the last 300 meters and finishes 11th. Kanter is 14th.

Kalaba takes the 2nd place in the GC and in the points, Ovsyannikov being 3rd in this competition.
Kiflay leads the mountain competition.
No change in the young rider classification (Pogacar) or the team classification (MOL).

Hills tomorrow! We’ll be expecting intense racing and more attacks. Stay tuned.
