Tirreno-Adriatico | Stage 2
Imladrik
The second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico will see the riders leave the seashore for Sovicille, in the surroundings of Sienne, some 211 km on the south-east. The best climber jersey chase will begin today on the lone cat. 3 climb at La Pineta, but neither the elevations, nor the length of the stage should disturb the sprinters too much yet. Except if some strong attackers want to make a statement this soon in the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_01.png

In any case, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis are the favorites of the day, with PCT guest pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski. The field is stacked though, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kennaugh able to take victory. The GC leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen is also considered as a favorite by the bookmakers, along his team’s sprinter Prasad.

The race is on, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson are the first at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Postlberger or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Kachur are in the following attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_02.png

The sprinters’ teams don’t want a big break though, so they’re already at the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Johannessen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Heidemann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Tolhoek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Agrotis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_03.png

A break of three it is, then! Andersen, Leung and Scotson. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Andersen had a hard time coming to the front, but he immediately takes turns nonetheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_04.png

Along the road, the gap goes up to 6’20 in the 80 km of flat roads, but it quickly goes down. It’s under 5 minutes when the break tackles the first climb of the day, on the plateau of Volterra (3,6 km, 5,8%). Nothing is distributed here, so no pressure. There are 120 km left.
Puma, Rabobank, ELCO and Aker remain the working teams in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_05.png

Nothing really happens n the next 60 km. The gap slowly comes down to 2’40, as the peloton approaches the main attraction of the day, the climb to Pineta. 7 km left before the mountain sprint.
It’s a pretty straight climb, without any attack needed for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson. He’s simply stronger than his companions, and easily takes the lead in the best climber classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung is 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Andersen 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_06.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Dversnes leads the peloton, not very far.

Scotson doesn’t wait in the descent. He wants to show the jersey all alone for a bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_07.png

And indeed, he manages to still be alone at the foot of the climb to Chiusdino, the town where Pope John 1st was born in the 5th century. More important for the race, there is a sprinter’s sprint at the summit, with points and bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_08.png

Scotson is easily swept up, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Groselj tries to lead out Enger with 1,3 km to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_09.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter, etc. are all there. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung has been dropped from the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis timed his sprint better, and he takes 6 points and seconds, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_10.png

28 km are left. The sprinters all have a gap in the downhill section, but they obviously don’t really ride, and the peloton is back together, bar the former break members. Leung already is 3 minutes in the back.

Puma – SAP wanted to control the last climb (3,3 km, 4,7%). But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Quintana doesn’t agree and attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Barguil wants to take his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_11.png

But they don’t go anywhere: enormous relay from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kmieliauskas, who brings them back. Only 16 km left now, all downhill and flat.

They controlled the race perfectly, but now someone could question Puma’s tactics: Kmieliauskas still is riding very hard, but he only has Kanter behind him, and there still are 7,3 km left! Seems like the better way to lose a sprint…
Behind them, Rabobank has Formolo and Tolhoek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_12.png

The final of the stage is very messy! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo, and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski go hard at the front.
And the Polish rider manages to get a gap! He has 5 seconds under the 5 km banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Karatzios is tasked to take it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_13.png

He does that well, but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Vermeersch attacks. This move drops some riders, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Vosekalns or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann.
2 km left. Vermeersch went nowhere. The Puma train is setting up, but they kind of forget Kanter. All others at the front are sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_14.png

Flamme rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle is leading the race with all the sprinters in his slipstream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Meeus is skyrocketing on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_15.png

700 m. Steimle brought him back, but again lost his sprinter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_16.png

200 last meters. The German is still leading, but he won’t make it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger is leading the pack behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Ovsyannikov are the fastest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_17.png

And it’s a photofinish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_18.png

That’s it for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Ovsyannikov is 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel 3rd.

Then come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_19.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Zingle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Hansen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Harrison close down the top 10.

Kanter only is 13th, behind Steimle…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/S2_20.png

With his victory and his second place at the intermediate sprint, Enger takes the GC and the points competition. Andersen and Chavanne are next.
Scotson is the first best climber of the race.
Pogacar stays the best young rider, so thats 3 jerseys for Cedevita.
MOL stays the best team.

More sprint tomorrow! See you there.
