Vuelta a Venezuela - Stage 13
niconico
Today is a circuit race around a route of about 10 kilometres which the riders will go around 12 times. It’s not a stage you would expect the favourites to try anything, but with the hill at the finish line, it could provide the GC riders with an opportunity to go for a stage win, or maybe another breakaway rider will succeed.

Three riders got away on the first lap. They were Broco, Klinger and Lengyel.

In the pack it looked like Slipstream and Ernst & Young had big plans for today.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0009-8.png

It was not just three before mentioned riders who got away. Quite a few other riders also attacked on the second lap, and four of them managed to bridge up as we entered lap number seven, with less than 60 kilometres left to race.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0011-9.png

At this point the pack had upped the pace, and look who is dropped!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0015-8.png

Somehow Bernhard Kohl just couldn’t keep up and none of his team-mate are dropping back to help him. You have got to wonder what the problem is. He did crash a few stages back, so maybe that’s the reason.

The pack is doing everything to reel in the break but with 10 kilometres to go, just before entering the final lap, the break still has a 1’01 advantage.

On the hill Chacon launches a wave of attacks and he is followed by Danielson, Medina, Pereiro and Ochoa Quintero. Garate is absent though.

Ochoa Quintero couldn’t make the junction right away, so Medina, Chacon, Pereiro and Danielson are first to bridge up with the break. Just 6 kilometres to go now.

Two kilometres later and Ochoa Quintero has made the junction.

The gap to the back is at 45 seconds, but it’s still the riders from early break relaying so it is coming down. They still have an advantage as they hit the hill for the final time. Chacon leads the sprint!

Faria from the early break is hanging in there with Chacon, Medina and Ochoa Quintero. Medina and Ochoa Quinterto are trying to make thier moves on both sides of Chacon!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0024-4.png

It is going to be a Venezuelean victory for sure but who will takes it?

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0025-6.png

Chacon will! Finally something upliftning for the prerace-favourite as we witness a Venezuela 1-2-3 here. The gap between the favourites and the gap was closed at the finish, but Kohl has again lost a big chunk of time on his opponents. Surely he must be injured after his crash a few stages back.

With Chacon’s win today, Medina is the only of the three Venezuelean GC favourites who hasn’t won a stage yet, as Ochoa Quintero won the opening stage. He will have a great chance on tomorrow’s Queen Stage though.
